Monica "Mona" Theresa (Dooley) Bowes
1950-2007
At the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB on December 8, 2007 Monica “Mona” Theresa (Dooley) Bowes passed away surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bath, NB and Roman Catholic by faith, Mona will be remembered for her beautiful smile, commitment to family, deep spirituality, positive attitude and penchant for decorating her homes and many others. She also had a great passion for golf.
Her professional life included working with many departments within the NB Provincial Government. She was the founder and principle of Anmar Holdings Limited. Mona then moved to Florida in 1981 and started a family business, Bradenton House of Golf. Mona returned home to New Brunswick this past summer to make her permanent home in Fredericton.
She is survived by her children Andrew (Amber) Bowes of Greenville, South Carolina, Marti (Steve) Wymer of Bradenton, Florida; grandchildren Sydney, Brigid, Mason and Michael. She also leaves behind her remaining eleven brothers and sisters Richie (Susan) Dooley of Calais, ME, Gaynell (Charlie) Bowlen of Fredericton, Elaine (Roy) Jones of Middleton, NS, Madonna Morrell of Fredericton and Oak Bay, Lillian Canning of Fredericton, Marion (Joe) Jodoin, Louise (Earle) Bolster of Victoria, BC, Clare (John) Robinson of Fredericton, Beverley (Rusty) MacArthur of Fredericton, Bobby (Cheryl) Dooley of Fredericton, Betty (Bill) Hall of Quispamsis, NB; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; many friends throughout Canada and the U.S. She was predeceased by her husband Robert “Bowsie” Bowes; her parents John and Florence (Kerr) Dooley.
Resting at Bishop’s Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road with visitation on Monday from 3-5 & 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in Lincoln, NB on Tuesday December 11, 2007 at 12:00 pm with Father Monte Peters officiating. Interment in the church cemetery will take place in the spring.

Edward Vaughn Smith
1940-2007
The passing of Edward Vaughn Smith of Fredericton occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers hospital on Saturday, December 8th, 2007 at the age of 67. He was the son of the late Irvine and Vivian Smith.
Survived by his wife, Alice Crossman, who has care for him during his long battle of illness; one step son David; three brothers Doug (Wanda), Roderick, Andy; two sisters Gayle (Sheldon), Candi. One special niece Kathy and husband Fred; several nieces and nephews; and one aunt. Edward was predeceased by one brother, Ross.
There will be no visitation or service as it was Edward’s wishes. For those who wish, memorial contributions can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
Guelda S. McCarty
1915-2007
The passing of Guelda S. McCarty of New Maryland occurred peacefully at the White Rapids Manor, Fredericton Junction NB on Monday, December 10th, 2007. Born in Ritchie, NB on December 28th, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Scott and Katie (Parker) Ritchie and wife of the late Donald McCarty. Guelda taught school in Fredericton for many years and was very active in the Girl Guide movement in Fredericton and on the Provincial level from her early teen years until her retirement.
Survived by her son Douglas and wife Myrna of New Maryland; special niece Doris DeMerchant of Woodstock; four grandchildren Danny (Karen) McCarty of Rusagonis, Joanne (Mark) Seymour, Jill (Allen) Corrie all of Fredericton, and Peter (Kady) McCarty of Wisconsin; eight great-grandchildren Donnie, Jordan, Elijah, Sawyer and Reece McCarty, Laura Seymour, Zachary and Nicolas Corrie; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by two sisters Dorothy Pickard and Louise MacKenzie.
Resting at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road with visitation on Thursday December 13, 2007 from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral service will be held on Friday December 14, 2007 at 2pm from the Faith Baptist Church, New Maryland with Pastor Larry Matthews officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. For those who wish memorials may be made to the Faith Baptist Church Building Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice. Special thanks to the staff of Chalmers Hospital, 4 South West, staff of White Rapid’s Manor and caregiver Kathy Corey for their wonderful care.
Ella Evelyn LeFort
The passing of Ella Evelyn LeFort of Fredericton occurred at Pine Grove Nursing Home, Fredericton, on Tuesday, December 11, 2007.Born in Moncton, NB, she was the daughter of the late Everett (Sr.) and Ella (West) Taylor. Ella was a member of the Christian Reform Church and loved the outdoors enjoying her camping and fishing trips on the Miramichi.
Surviving are three daughters, Joyce Burtt (Ralph) of Fredericton, Marion Fudge of Calgary and Florence Currie (Paul) of Nashwaak Bridge, NB; one sister, Edna Knowlton of Vancouver; three granddaughters, Carol Lynch (Budd), Rev. Dr. Cindi Chenard (Jacques) and Jill Taylor (Chris); two grandsons, Robert “Bob” Burtt (Suzanne) and Mark Currie (Shelley); seven great-grandchildren, Andrew, Laura, Catherine, Isaac, Emma, Adam and Benjamin; several nieces and nephews. Ella is predeceased by her parents, husband Thomas Charles LeFort, a daughter Ella May and four brothers, Roy, Everett, Edgar and Sterling Taylor.
Visitation will be held at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton, on Friday, December 14, 2007 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held from Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, December 15, 2007 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Paul Thompson officiating, Interment in the Sunny Bank Cemetery at a later date. Hayden LeBaron Leaman
1927-2007
At the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Sunday December 16, 2007 Hayden LeBaron Leaman of Fredericton passed away at the age of 80. Born in Lords Cove, Deer Island, NB on June 16, 1927 he was a son of the late Morton and Gertrude (Pendleton) Leaman.
He graduated from Deer Island Consolidated School; NB Normal School, Fredericton; UNB Fredericton (BA &B Ed); Columbia University, New York (MA); University of Leeds, England (Diploma, English Studies); Universite Laval, Quebec (Diplome, Francais). Hayden was also a student at Mount Allison University (Canadian History); University of London, England (Beaverbrook Overseas Scholar); St. Thomas University, Fredericton (Spanish). He was a
High School Teacher in NB at St. George, St. Andrews and Moncton; a High School Principal in NB at Back Bay-Letete, Lawrence Station, Dorchester & Port Elgin Regional; a Professor at New Brunswick Teachers College & UNB Fredericton (English and English Education); UNB Extension and English Language Programme; Mount Allison University Summer School (Educational Psychology); CIIDIR, Oaxaca, Mexico (English); a consultant for the NB Department of Education (Secondary English curriculum & Competence in English Testing); Honorary Research Associate, UNB (thesis reader & UNB-Mexico Relations); Executive Board Member: Canadian Council of Teachers of English.
He is survived by his wife Marion (Horton); three children Margaret Forster (Jeremy), Rebecca Leaman (Rick Atkinson), Karl Leaman (Mary Hall) all of Fredericton; one granddaughter Emily Leaman of Fredericton; numerous nieces. He was also predeceased by three brothers.
The family will receive friends at Bishop’s Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7-9 pm. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church (Parish) Church on Friday December 21, 2007 at 2:00 pm with Father Anthony Kwaw officiating. Interment will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date. Contributions to the NB Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
John Patrick McKendy
1949-2008
John Patrick McKendy, loving father, Quaker and professor of sociology at St. Thomas University, and long-time peace theorist and activist, passed away at his home in Douglas, NB on Friday, October 31st, 2008 at the age of 59.
John is survived by his two daughters, Colleen McKendy (Brendan Moore) and Laura McKendy of Fredericton, their mother, Carol Wakeham, of Fredericton and John's mother, Bernadette McKendy of Bathurst. He is also survived by three brothers: Charles (Nancy Ouellet) of Saint John, Kevin of Fredericton and Michael (Judy) of Fredericton, and three sisters: Margaret of Miramichi, Cecilia MacNeil (Philip) of Fredericton and Mary Bernadette (Bill Pickett) of Riverview. He is mourned by his nieces and nephews: Charlie and Liam McKendy, Angel Cavanaugh, Ben, Brian and Monica McKendy, Nathan and Neil Pickett, Maureen MacNeil, Kristin Van Pelt (Keith), Kaitlin Wakeham, and Megan and Ryan Coslove. He is also mourned by his parents-in-law, Gerald and Eileen Wakeham of New Jersey, his sisters-in-law Cathy Wakeham (Steve Chatburn) of NJ and Patricia Coslove (Kevin) of NJ, and his brothers-in-law Bob Wakeham (Heather Coultas) of St. John’s Newfoundland and Jerry Wakeham (Cheryl) of NJ. He was predeceased by his father, Arthur McKendy, in 1993.
John grew up in Bathurst, NB. Upon graduating from LeBlanc High School in 1967, he attended St. Francis Xavier University. He pursued postgraduate studies in sociology at the University of Toronto, obtaining a PhD in 1981. He taught sociology at St. Thomas University for 29 years. John's research interests included social inequality and social justice, gender and social class, the sociology of emotions and violence, and social structure.
He was a spiritual man; a member of the Fredericton Worship Group of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), as well as the Fredericton Peace Coalition. John both promoted and practiced non-violent conflict resolution. For many years, he assisted men in Dorchester Penitentiary in discovering alternatives to violence. John spent the past two summers in the African nation of Burundi, contributing to the construction of an AIDS clinic for women through the African Great Lakes Initiative Program of the Friends Peace Teams. He planned to return in January to continue his humanitarian efforts.
John had many interests. He loved camping and hiking, and had covered many miles of trails throughout North America, especially in the National Parks. His dream was to one day walk the entire Appalachian Trail. He was also a licensed amateur radio operator for almost 40 years with the call letters VE9JM.
By John’s request, donations can be made to the Canadian Friends Service Committee (https://cfsc.quaker.ca/). St. Thomas University has established a scholarship in John's name and donations can be made through the University.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Bishop's Funeral Home. No flowers by request. There will be no visitation but friends and family are invited to a celebration of John’s life at two o’clock on Wednesday, November 5th, at St. Dunstan’s Church, Regent Street, Fredericton.
John will always be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit.
Leslie Paul
1953-2008
The passing of Leslie Jeffrey Joseph Paul occurred Sunday, October 19, 2008 at his residence, 167 Maliseet Dr., St. Mary’s First Nation, Fredericton, NB. He was 55. Born April 9, 1953 in Fredericton, he was the son of the late Daniel and Bernadette (Paul) Paul. Leslie was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No.4, Fredericton and was employed with S.A. Deliveries for 17 years.
Leslie is survived by his wife Jean Marie (Brooks) Paul; sons, Darren (Sharon), Joshua (Sarah) and Joe Penny; grandchildren Ashley, Mark, Michael, Melissa, Payton, Jaeda and Shaniah; great grandchildren Markus and Ethan; brothers, and sisters, Daniel (Bernie), Stanley (Margaret), Adam (Tina), Martin (Pauline), Byron (Faye), Gloria (Earl) and Cathy (Gene); several nieces, nephews and Godchildren.
Predeceased by his parents, daughter Cheryl Knockwood, a brother Phillip, a sister Yvonne and infant twins Deborah and Clayton Paul.
Leslie will rest at his home, 167 Maliseet Dr., St. Mary’s First Nation, Fredericton, NB on Wednesday evening and Thursday. The funeral service will be held from St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church on Friday, October 24, 2008 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Monte Peters as celebrant. A Legion Tribute Service will be held at the church. Cremation to follow. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the NB Lung Association.
