MEEHAN, ROBERT J. - The death of Robert John Meehan of New Line, NB occurred at the Sussex Health Centre on August 19, 2006 at the age of 93. Born in Donegall, Ireland he was a son of the late Robert and Adelaide (Buchanan) Meehan and the husband of the late Marjorie A.(Cunningham) Meehan who passed away in 1992. Robert was a Veteran of WW II, a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion and worked as a mechanic at the Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1978. He is survived by his daughters, Carole Patrick (Ronald) of Point Au Baril, ON, Kathleen Hodgin (Clifford) of New Line, Judy Nickerson (Gerry) of St. Albert, AB and Eileen Elder (Donald) of Riverbank; son, Lloyd Meehan (Carmen) of Jeffries Corner; thirteen grandchildren; four great granddaughters; sister, Isabel Cunningham of Jeffries Corner; brother, Hugh Meehan (Elsie) of Smiths Creek; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Robertson, Sarah McMackin, Eileen MacDonald, Molly Mallory and Adelaide Sherwood; and brothers, Dan, Moses, James and Andrew Meehan. The family will receive visitors at the Sussex Select Community Funeral Home, 21 Aiton Road Sussex (506-433- 2133) on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9PM. Sussex Branch #20 of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a Tribute on Monday evening at 6:45PM. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Philip Dallimore officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park, Sussex. MCGRATH, HAROLD - Harold McGrath, age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB. Harold is lovingly missed and will always be honored and remembered by his sons, Paul and Michael; daughter, Jill; sister, Elsie; grandchildren, Ashley, Krista, Michael, Paulina, Robert and Stephanie; and several nieces and nephews. Born in Port Wade, NS, Harold is predeceased by his beloved wife, Jacqueline (nee Crotty); his parents, William and Accillia; and brother, Ralph. Harold was Chief Steward on the Princess Helene during World War II and later transferred to Canadian Pacific Railway on train services to Boston, Montreal, Woodstock and Edmundston. Upon leaving the railway, Harold was with the Windsor Tavern, where he became Fredericton's first beverage waiter and later moved to the Riverview Arms, where he extended his warmth and hospitality to many friends and customers. Harold continued on to the NB Solicitor General's Department, where he was Deputy Sheriff, Court Services. His working career spanned fifty-four years. Harold's love of music was shared over decades with his family and friends. A well known banjo and fiddle player, Harold played in dance bands throughout the Fredericton region and was one of the banjo players in the very successful Smoky Mokes Minstrel presentations. In later life, Harold enjoyed his fellowship and fiddle playing with the River Valley Fiddlers. Honourary pallbearers include David Brown, Bruce Gray, Wayne Hallihan, Nathan A. Jones, Norman Stewart, and Donald Sutherland. A Memorial Service will be held at the York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive, Fredericton at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 22, 2006. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
JOHNSON, MARK MERLYN - The Funeral Service for the late Mark M. Johnson will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 1pm from Castle "Fallsview" Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. (634-1701). DYKENS, MAIDA ALICE - Maida Alice Dykens, of George Street, passed away at her residence on Saturday, August 19, 2006. Born in Charlottetown, PEI, she was the daughter of Mary Edna (Gallant) MacLean and the late Gerald MacLean, and wife of the late Lawrence Dykens. Maida worked at Smitty's Pub for several years and at the SJRH (Housekeeping Department) from 1989-2000. She enjoyed playing cards and loved making Paper Tole Crafts. Survived by one son, Terry Dykens (Wendy) of Halifax; two daughters, Kelly Crowe (Terry) and Shannon Piccott (Chris) all of Saint John; two brothers, Lorne MacLean (Chris) of Ontario and Dook MacLean (Shirley) of PEI; as well as one sister, Zelda Rafuse of PEI; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Following cremation, a Memorial Service will be held in Cavanagh's Chapel on Wednesday, August 23, 2006 at 1pm, followed by internment in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to A.W. BROWN, PRESTON - The death of Preston Brown, of Brown Crescent, Bathurst, occurred Saturday, August 19, 2006 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst, after a lengthy illness. Born in Bathurst (North Tetagouche), NB, on December 13, 1923, he was the son of the late Arthur and Jane (Carter) Brown. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a long-time member of St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder for many years, and sang in the church choir. He worked as a truck driver for many years, retiring from Atlantic Wholesalers in 1983 due to illness. In partnership with his wife, he delivered Meals-on-wheels for twenty years. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Eva (Caldwell) Brown of Bathurst; twin sons, Lloyd Brown (Kathy) and Lorne Brown, both of Saint John; one daughter, Rebecca Brown (MacTobias) of Saint John; one grandson, Colin; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Wanda Cummings; three brothers, William, Clifton (twin) and Carr; as well as two sisters and a brother in infancy. The body will rest after 2:00 p.m. Monday at Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst. GILLIS, WARREN MELVIN - The death of Warren Melvin Gillis, of Rollingdam, NB, partner of Janet Shatford, occurred on August 25, 2006 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born in St. Stephen, he was the son of Melvin L. (Anne) and the late Charlene (McKinney) Gillis. He was employed as a laborer with various companies in the Saint John area and had worked for Rothesay Paper for a number of years. He loved the outdoors especially fishing and hunting. He is survived by his children Anthony, Andrew and Carla, and their mother, Paula Gillis; Deborah Ann Shatford; grandchildren Courtney, Dominic, Haley, Mckenzie and Brooklyn; step-children, Janet, Mark and Charley Shatford and their children Jennifer and Jasmine (his special girl); his sisters, Kimberly Moore (William) and Pamela Stackhouse (Steven); and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His sister, Debbie Ann; and infant brother, Raymond predeceased him. Resting at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row (634-7424), with visiting on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. ALLABY, PETER L. Peter L. Allaby of Woodstock, NB passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2006 at the age of 39. Born in Fredericton, NB on April 5, 1967. Son of Lloyd and Ann (Quartermain) Allaby of Woodstock, NB. Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Krista Bird and his children, Andrew, Deidre, Jarika and Miranda. BARTLETT, BERNARD ROGERSON Bernard Bartlett died peacefully on Friday, August 25th, 2006 at York Manor Nursing Home in his 87th year. Born at Bartlett's Mills, Charlotte County, N.B. on March 29, 1920, he was the son of the late E. Hollis and Georgie (Lawrence) Bartlett, and beloved husband of the late Bettie (Ferris) Bartlett. He was the loving and greatly respected Father of Doug Bartlett (Annalee) and Marilyn Brady (Dwight.) His cherished grandchildren are Heather Brady (Marshall Posner), Robyn Brady (Michael Regnier), Jonathan Bartlett (Susan Cole), Lynsey Bartlett, and Katy Culberson (Andrew). His surviving siblings are Lester Bartlett (Mardi), Frances Steeves (Perley) and Lois Booker (Ronald). He was predeceased by his parents; his wife; brothers, Lawrence, Beverley, Marvin and Hubert and sister, May. He will be fondly remembered by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of good friends. His strong Christian faith was attested in his membership of Brunswick Street United Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, choir member and Boy Scout leader. He was also a member of the Gideons and the Fredericton Golden Club. His enjoyment of hunting and fishing turned in later years to a fondness for bird watching, photography and golf. Bernard was a graduate of N.S. Agricultural College and McDonald College of McGill University. He was a poultry field man, then Director of the Poultry and Marketing Branches of the N.B. Department of Agriculture, from which he retired in 1980. Visitation will be at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Thursday, August 31st, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 1st, 2006 at 2 PM at Brunswick Street Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Terry Atkinson and Rev. Ralph Irving officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be at the Oak Bay Rural Cemetery at 7 PM. THORNE, LULA - Mrs. Lula Thorne of Sussex passed away on August 26, 2006. Born in Youngs Cove on August 4, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Murray and Maggie (Barton) Lewis, the step-daughter of the late Cora Lewis and the beloved wife of the late George Thorne. Lula is survived by her daughters, Mildred (Roy) Perry of Ontario, Ruby (Edward) McFarlane of Rockville, Joan (Wayne) Ward of BC and Judith (Ivan) Pascoe of Sussex; her sons, Arnold (Sue) Ontario, Charles (Doris) of Sussex, Donald (Gail)of Ontario, Robert (Anne) of Moncton, David and Dale Muir of Mt. Middleton, William (Jeanette) of Boutiliers Point, Wayne (Jean) of Picadilly, Douglas (Barbara) of Ontario, Brian (Cathy) of Sussex and Carl (Emily) of Sussex; her brothers, Ernest (Mary) of Mt. Middleton and Randolph (Phyllis) of Moncton; her sister, Julia Almon of Ontario; 46 grandchildren; 69 great grandchildren; three great great granddaughters; as well as several nieces and nephews. Lula was predeceased by her daughter, Beulah; her sons, Ron and Lloyd; her brothers, Harry and Norman; her sisters, Edith, Dorothy and Elizabeth; her grandchildren, John Wayne Douglas and Alan; her sons-in-law, Alyre Cyr and Christian Peterson; and her daughter-in-law, Betty.
