Elspeth Anne Smale
Elspeth Anne Smale (neé White), of Fredericton, passed away suddenly at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, on October 22, 2009.
Born in Saint John, NB, (1942) she was the daughter of the late Roderick George White and Katherine Stowe (Jamer) White.
Anne was a retired employee of the Region 3 Hospital Corporation. After receiving her BSc at Mount Allison University in 1964, she began her career as a clinical dietician in 1965 at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax. In 1968, she received her BEd from the University of New Brunswick and started at the Oromocto Public Hospital. After 18 years as a dietician, Anne moved into hospital administration and subsequently held the positions of Administrative Director of Personnel and Support Services, Assistant and Acting Executive Director and Administrative Director of Therapeutic Services at OPH. In 1992, Anne was appointed to the Region 3 Corporate Office in Fredericton as a Special Assistant and Policy Advisor. She maintained this position until her retirement from River Valley Health in July 2005. In that time, Anne played an important part in several special projects for the region such as haemodialysis service development and corporate policy development. She was also the region accreditation coordinator for the surveys in 2001 and 2004, and was instrumental in the development and implementation of the organ and tissue donation program.
Anne grew up in St. Paul’s United Church, and was a member of the Oromocto United Church, where she was at one time Secretary and on the Committee of Stewards. She eventually moved into Fredericton, attending Smythe Street Cathedral, where she found great joy in the musical services and productions. She was a former member and past president of the Oromocto Rotary Club, a former member, secretary, president and director of the New Brunswick Dietetic Association, and a member of the Canadian Dietetic Association.
Anne is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Katharine Smale (Gregor McEwan) of Saskatoon, her son, Steven Roderick William Smale of Fredericton, and brother, Roderick M. White (Cathy) also of Fredericton. She was the beloved Nana to grandchildren Taylor, Kaylee, and Callum. She is fondly remembered by her nieces, nephews, and extended family. She was predeceased by her father, her mother and her husband, Willam Frederick Smale of Oromocto.
Visitation will be held at McAdam's Select Community Funeral Home on Monday, October 26th, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held at the Symthe Street Cathedral on Tuesday, October 27th, 2009 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Wayne Flowers will officiate. Interment will be in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery.
For those who wish or in lieu of flowers, memorials in Anne's memory may be made to the Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre or to World Vision Canada toward community medical supplies.
The family would like to give special thanks for dear friends who provided invaluable support to Anne and her family in hospital; they would also like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff at Chalmers for their excellent care and attention during Anne’s brief stay.
Susan Lorraine Smith
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Susan Smith of Fredericton, NB, on Saturday, June 6th, 2009. Born in Fredericton NB, she was the daughter of the late Tedford E. and Ruby H. (Henry) Smith.
Survived by two sons,Tedford MacLaggan of Halifax, NS and Timothy (Frances) MacLaggan of Moncton, NB;daughter, Marylee MacLaggan of Moncton,NB; brother, Michael (Paulette) Smith of Geary, NB,grandchildren, Matthew and Aaron and several nieces, nephews, cousins.
Visitation will be held at Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Nick Sheehan
1990-2009
It is with great sadness that the family of Nick Sheehan announces his sudden passing at St. Francis Xavier University, NS, on Sunday, March 8th, 2009. Born in Halifax, NS, on July 15th, 1990, he leaves to mourn his parents, Peter and Dianne Sheehan of Fredericton, NB; sisters, Kelsey, Katelyn and Lindsay Sheehan and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by grandparents. A very special group of young men and women at St. FX have been deeply touched by his short presence and join with friends from high school and hockey in Fredericton in mourning his passing.
Visitation will be held at McAdam’s Select Community Funeral Home, 160 York St., Fredericton, NB on Thursday, March 12th, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dunstan’s Parish on Friday, March 13th at 12 noon with Rev. Gerald White as Celebrant. Interment will take place at a later date. James (Jim Bob) Pirie
1980-2009
It is with great sadness that the family of James Martin Daniel Pirie (Jim Bob) announces his death at the Saint John Regional Hospital on March 10th, 2009. Jim Bob was born December 2nd, 1980 and was the adored son of Margaret Wilby.
Jim is survived by his mother, Margaret; his siblings, Richard Pirie (Niki) of Fredericton, NB, Adele Pirie of Fredericton, NB; his Brotherhood of Dads; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is predeceased by his father, Richard Pirie Sr. and his grandfather, A. Emerson Wilby Q.C.
Jim Bob was one of life’s true gentlemen. He had a great love for life, and cherished the time he spent with family, friends, working with the Labourer’s Union Local 900, and hanging out with his dog Jake, who were all very important to him. Jim Bob was unique. He taught us many lessons, including true friendship and love.
Visitation will be held at McAdams Select Community Funeral Home on Thursday, March 12th, 2009 from 7-9 pm and Friday, March 13th, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Dunstan’s Catholic Church on March 14th, 2009 at 2:00 pm with Fr. John Jennings and Fr. Gerald White as celebrants. Carolyn Elaine Oneill
1945-2009
It is with great sadness that the family of Carolyn Elaine Oneill of Jewetts Mills announces her passing at home surrounded by her loving family. Carolyn was born in Fredericton, NB on May 3rd, 1945. She spent her working career as a teacher in Perth-Andover and retired in 2000.
Carolyn is survived by her partner Lesley Olmstead of Jewetts Mills; her brother, Francis Oneill and sister-in law Mary of Gladwyn, NB; two nieces, Valerie Sullivan and husband Allison of Carlingford, NB and Karen Oneill (Clifford) of Naples, Florida; one nephew, Dwayne Oneill and wife Laura of Gladwyn; one great nephew, Christopher Sullivan; six great nieces Megan and Sarah Sullivan, Hannah, Emma and Christie Oneill and Kaylee Clifford.
She is predeceased by both of her parents Henry (1994) and Ruby (2002) Oneill of Gladwyn, NB and her great niece Maggie Ruby Oneill (1997).
The family wishes to thank the Extramural Nurses who came to her home, the staff in Oncology, and a special thank you to her neighbours and friends for all their love and support.

A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at her home in Jewetts Mills (42 Route 615) on Thursday March 19th at 2 PM with an open house following the service. On Friday March 20th beginning at 3:30 PM there will be another open house at the home of Allison and Valerie Sullivan in Carlingford (220 Field Settlement Road).
Rev. Ronald Chesley Cunningham
1932-2009
The death of Rev. Ronald Chesley Cunningham, husband of Lois (nee Grant) (Harvey) Cunningham, of Maugerville, NB, occurred at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Friday, March 20th, 2009. Born in Saint John, NB, son of the late George and Ethel (Harris) Cunningham.
Ron is survived by his wife Lois, his step-son, Mark Harvey and his wife Bonny and their three sons, Chaz, Ji, and Tejas Harvey all of Maugerville, NB, and one sister-in-law, Wanda Klingbell of Fredericton, NB.
There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will take place at Brunswick Street Baptist Church on Monday, March 23rd, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Greg Geldart officiating. A reception will take place immediately following in the church hall. For those who wish, memorial tributes made to the Brunswick Street Baptist Church Building Fund, the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, the Green Hill Lake Camp or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Jo Ann Embleton
1947-2009
The passing of Jo Ann (Mackay) Embleton of Fredericton, NB occurred peacefully at her beloved cottage in Bear Island along the picturesque Saint John River on Monday, June 1st, 2009. Born in Stellarton, NS, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Ian and Ann (Buck) Mackay.
Jo Ann moved to Fredericton after meeting her best friend, partner and love of her life, her husband of 38 years, Paul.
A devoted wife and mother, Jo Ann’s passions were participating in the development of her family and taking pride in her home. As lover of nature, she enjoyed being at the cottage, feeding her animal friends and manicuring the property on her John Deer Tractor. Jo Ann was loved by all who knew her and she will be remembered for the spring in her step, the twinkle in her eyes and the genuine interest she took in everyone she met.
Jo Ann is greatly loved by her “Hun” Paul; her son, Jason and his wife Tabitha and her grandson Rhykr all of Fredericton; her daughter Jennea Elles and her husband Tryfon and grandson Harrison all of Fredericton, NB; four brothers, Ian (Sandy) Mackay of New Glasgow, NS, Frank Mackay of Edmonton, AB, Jack Mackay (Agnes) of New Glasgow and Colin Mackay (Brie) of Pictou, NS; two sisters, Dana Grieves (Peter) of New Glasgow and Lilla Walker (Bruce) of Stellarton, NS, and one sister-in-law, Jean Mackay. Predeceased by her parents and one brother David Mackay.
All are welcome to join Jo Ann’s family at the Delta Hotel in Ballroom A on Friday, June 5th between 4- 8 PM to share memories. A private family ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes made to the Bear Island Cemetery or the Dr. Everett Chalmers Neo-Natal Unit would be appreciated by the family. Christopher Frederick Kennedy
The death of Chris Kennedy of Fredericton occurred at the age of 23 on June 11th, 2009 at his residence. He was the son of James and Katie (Halterman) Kennedy of Fredericton, NB. Chris was graduating from St. Thomas University this year and was a long time member of St. Thomas Early English Dramatic Society (STEED).
He will be sadly missed by his parents; his sisters, Norah and Julia of Fredericton, NB; paternal grandparents, Dick and Judy Kennedy of Traceyville, NB; maternal grandmother, Marcia Halterman of Bath, ME; aunt and uncles, Liz Kennedy Klaassen, Robert Kennedy, Hank Halterman and their families.
Visitation will be held at McAdams Select Community Funeral Home on Monday, June 15th, 2009 from 7-9 pm. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the St. Thomas Chapel on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 at 2:00 pm with Fr. John Jennings as celebrant. Margot Hildegart Cutts Brewer,
It is with great sadness that the family and friends of Margot Hildegart Cutts Brewer of York Manor, Fredericton, NB announce her passing on June 19, 2009.
She enjoyed a long and healthy life and in the end passed away peacefully. Despite the ravages of Alzheimer disease, she maintained her grace, dignity and sense of humour until the end and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Margot was born in Frankenberg, East Germany. In her youth she enjoyed skiing, tennis and horseback riding and later served as a nurse during the Second World War. After the war she met Ken Cutts, a British subject based in Germany. They married and later immigrated to St. John’s, NL.
Margot was well known in St. John’s as the owner of Chez Margot, an exclusive clothing boutique in the Avalon Mall. In 1982 she married Roland Brewer, formerly of Fredericton, and lived with him in Carbonear, NL until his death in 2005.
Margot is survived by her son Nick Cutts, his wife Mary Bertucci and their son David of St. Petersburg, Fl. She is also survived by her late husband’s children; Margot (Ottawa), Allison (Halifax) and Merredith (Fredericton).
She will be greatly missed by her many friends especially Tom and Sharon Dunn, her dear friend Pat Delaney, Jackie Webster, and her angel Dwight Hickey.
She spent the last three years of her life in Fredericton, cared for by her daughters there, particularly Merredith who was by her side until the very end.
A special thank you goes out to the staff of the Atrium at York Manor, who became like a family to her during her two-year stay.
There will be no visitation but people are invited to take a few moments to remember Margot and celebrate her life and what it meant to have known her. Margot was fun loving and intelligent, with a great fondness for animals. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA, Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of your choice.
