Strong, Jack Jeffries

Passed peacefully away at home in St. John’s on March 18th, 2016, Jack Jeffries Strong at the age of 88. Predeceased by his wife Eileen, father James Strong, mother Elizabeth Strong and sisters Louisa Russell and Eva Spindler. Jack had a loving family, sons Jim (Jill Diamond) and Andrew (Anne Marie Powers), granddaughters Kelly (Bryan Morgan), Sarah (Conrad, Matt and Brooke Vincent) and Melissa, as well as special friend Vera Dupree (and family). Jack will also be remembered fondly by a large circle of friends, as well as relatives in England. Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, Jack grew up during the Depression and at the age of 16 joined the Merchant Navy and went on to study to become a Captain. In 1964 he accepted a job at the College of Fisheries (now the Marine Institute) in St. John’s, where he worked for 20 years before retiring. He was an active volunteer with St. Augustine’s Parish and with many organizations throughout his life, such as The Newfoundland Horticultural Society, Peter Pan Lawn Bowling Association and The Merchant Navy Veterans Association. Jack was an ardent gardener and wrote a gardening column with The Telegram for over 27 years. He had a passion for travelling and exploring the world, which began as a young seaman and continued throughout his life with Eileen and family, and then in later years with Vera. His annual salmon fishing trip with his sons was a cherished tradition. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather and will be dearly remembered for his sense of humor, love of life and kind soul. As per Jack’s wishes, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jack’s life will take place at 10:00 am on March 28th, 2016, at St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Westerland Road, St. John’s. No flowers by request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Health Care Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.

Bissell, Betty Ann

Passed peacefully away with friends and family by her side on Friday, March 18th, 2016, Betty Bissell, aged 78. Betty spent her career as a primary teacher for 30 years impacting many lives. Betty was a faithful member of The Worship Center for many years. Her gentle and quiet influence will be remembered by many. Her selflessness and kind-hearted words and deeds will always be cherished in the hearts of those she touched. Predeceased by her parents Albert and Viola, and sisters Clara and Laura. Left to mourn is her loving sister Sherry; brother Tom (Jackie); nieces Elisha (Brad), Candra (Chris) and Kaitlyn; nephew Nathan; great niece Briley; great nephew Dylan; special family members Jamie and Annette; as well as a large circle of family and friends. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the emergency room, at the Health Science Center, as well as all who have travelled, and shown love and support through this difficult time. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. A visitation will take place on Sunday, March 20th, 2016 from 7 – 9 p.m, and Monday, March 21st, 2016 from 2 – 4 p.m and 7 – 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Bethesda Pentecostal Church, on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2016 at 2 p.m, with interment to follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Wycliffe Bible Translators, or The Canadian Bible Society.

Best, Elizabeth Winnifred (nee Stevenson)

Best, Elizabeth Winnifred - Passed away peacefully on Thursday March 24, 2016 surrounded by family and friends, Elizabeth (Betty) Best (nee Stevenson), age 85. Betty was predeceased by her husband Frederick and son Clarence (Moe). Leaving to celebrate her life are sons: Hubert (Marilyn), Fred (Cathy), daughter Wanda (Keith); daughter-in-law Wavey; grandchildren: Nicole, Amanda, Jessica, Andrew, Freddy, Connie, Rodney, Carrie, Morris, Sharissa and four great grandchildren. Special family loves Kevin Thompson and Rowena Bennett Manning. A sincere thankyou to the Nursing Staff of the Health Science Centre and Palliative Care. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visiting arranged for Tuesday, March 29 from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Funeral service will take place at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday March 30th, at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or please make a donation to The Vera Perlin Society or Daffodil Place.

Delahunty, Linda (nee Kearley, formerly Basha)

After a short battle with cancer, Linda Delahunty passed away on March 27th, 2016 at 70 years of age. Born on Bell Island in 1945, Linda grew up in a close community, surrounded by friends and family. She spent many years helping students pursue their goal of a post-secondary education through her work with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Student Aid Division. A wonderful mother to her two sons, Linda was also a devoted, fun-loving grandmother, truly adored by her 8 grandkids. Always beautifully turned-out, Linda lived a gentle, dignified life. She loved to travel and looked for every opportunity to get together with her family and friends. She was a wonderful, giving, caring woman and she will be missed terribly by so many. Linda was predeceased by her husband, Basil; parents, Raymond and Ann Kearley; and sister, Margaret Hammond. She is survived by her three brothers, two sons, three stepchildren, and 8 grandchildren. Visitation at Carnell's Funeral Home 329 Freshwater Road on Tuesday March 29, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Prayer Vigil and Celebration of Linda's life will held at Carnell's Funeral Home, Freshwater Road on Wednesday March 30th, 2016 from 9:30 am - noon. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road, at 9:30am on Thursday, March 31, 2016. Flowers are graciously accepted. Donations in Linda's Memory may be made to the Health Care Foundation, specifically to the Palliative Care Unit at the Leonard A. Miller Center.

Dowden, Audrey Mary (nee Field)

Passed peacefully away surrounded by her family on March 28, 2016. Predeceased by husband, Allan Dowden; parents, Gordon and Elizabeth; brothers, Gordon (dec- Winnie) and Robert; sisters, Marge Hendricks and Millicent (dec- Wayne Taylor). Left to mourn with broken hearts are daughters, Janet (Thomas Seale) and Susan (Wade Brenton); four grandchildren, whom she loved with all of her heart, Amanda (Steve Robinson), Ashley (Manny Singh), Alyson (Steve Brosseau), and Avery. Great-grandchildren Lucas, Madalyn, and Baby Singh on the way. Brother, Eric Field (Betty); brother-in-law, Robert Hendricks; sister-in-law, Bride Locke, and brother-in-law, Robert Dowden and a large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and lifelong friends whom she cherished. Special thanks to family and friends who helped during this difficult time. At Audrey’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Rd. on Wednesday March 30, 2016 from 12-9 and Thursday March 31, 2016 12pm-5pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Augustine’s Church, Westerland Rd. on Friday, April 1, 2016 at 10:30am Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. No flowers by request. Martin, Violet

Martin, Violet (nee Benson). (June 19, 1932 – March 28, 2016) - Passed peacefully away at St. Clare’s Hospital on March 28, 2016, Violet Martin, aged 83 years. Predeceased by her mother Clara Benson. Left with cherished memories are her husband of 66 years, Wesley; daughter Marguerite (Garry) Knight, son Gary (Delores), daughter Marilyn (Craig) Parrell; grandchildren Stefanie (Mark), Jason (Robin), Jordan, Mark and Holly; precious little great-grandson Wesley Robert; niece Muriel (Graham); nephew Randy (Evelyn) and Joshua of New Harbour. Also special friends Pauline Connors and Margaret Craniford, as well as other relatives and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday, March 29 from 2-9 p.m. and Wednesday, March 30 from 10 a.m. – 12 noon. Funeral service will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, March 30 at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers are greatly accepted or donations in Violet’s memory may be made to Saint Luke’s Homes, 24 Road De Luxe, St. John’s, NL, A1E 5Z3.

Osmond, Gerald George

Passed peacefully away in the presence of his family on March 28, 2016, Gerald George Osmond, in his 85th year. Predeceased by his parents John (Jack) and Gladys Osmond, and infant brother Walter John. Left with many happy memories are Gerry’s devoted wife of 56 years Sandra (Macfarlane), Daughter Gillian and Son-in-law Doug Reid, Daughter Tracey and Son-in-law Jeffrey Pittman, and Son Ian and Daughter-in-law Suzanne (Pike) Osmond; also his much loved grandchildren Joshua (Victoria), Gregory, Allyson and Kaitlyn Reid; Jack, Sophie and Rachel Pittman; and Thomas and Justin Osmond. Also celebrating his life are his Sister Frances; his Brother, Pastor Ronald Osmond, and Sister-in-law Betty Osmond in Calgary; his Sister-in-law Judy Macfarlane in Vancouver; nieces and nephews living across North America; and a large circle of friends. Gerry’s life was dedicated to nurturing his family, his church community (Bethesda), his business (Mitchell Agencies), his garden, and his golf swing. A natural salesman who relished the challenge of a reticent customer, Gerry grew Mitchell Agencies from a small wholesaler to an Atlantic Canadian food brokerage company before handing it over to the next generation and settling into semi-retirement and life as a snowbird. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers who took care of Gerry as his health declined (particularly Amie, Kim, Madonna and Dr. Percy Crocker), and to the many friends who supported his family through this difficult time. Skipper, you were well loved and will be sorely missed. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Monday, March 28, 2016 from 7 – 9 p.m. and Tuesday, March 29, 2016 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 12 noon from Bethesda Pentecostal Church. Lynch, Joyce

Passed peacefully away, surrounded by her loving family on April 5th, 2016 at the Health Science Centre, Joyce Lynch, aged 83. Predeceased by her parents Joseph and Sarah Drover; husband Joe; sister Ruth; brothers Wilson, Joe, Wilf, and Tom; and daughter-in-law Linda. Leaving to mourn her five children: Wilf (Winnie), Glenn (Karen), Brenda (Michael), Terry (Debbie), and Steve; five grandsons: Scott Duff, Glenn Lynch Jr, Steve Lynch Jr, Jordan Lynch, and Terry Stone; great granddaughter Hannah Lynch; and sisters Phyllis Drover and Beatrice Marsh. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Thursday, April 7th, 2- 4 p.m and 7 – 9 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Friday, April 8th, 2016 at 11 a.m in The Carnell Memorial Chapel, with interment to follow in the Non-Denominational cemetery, Paradise. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of one’s choice.
