Dowden, Harold

Passed away peacefully at home on Monday February 29th, 2016, Dickey Dowden, aged 75 years. Predeceased by his parents George Henry and Elizabeth Anne; sister Joan (Bob); brothers Allan and David “Fong”; brothers-in-law David, Robert “Bob”, Kevin; sister-in-law Elizabeth “Libby”. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his wife Joan (Fleming) of 57 years; brother Robert “Bob”, sisters-in-law Diane, Debbie, Rosalin, Dinah, Penny and Audrey; brother–in-law Gary; children Colette (Felix), Craig (Debbie), Cathy (Paul), and Christina (Jeff); grandchildren Sherry (Wally), Shannon (Angeline), Amber, Sarah, Juliana and Benjamin; great grandchildren Kyra and Teagan; also many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Dickey was an incredible mechanic known throughout the St. John’s area. He dearly treasured his family and friends, snow clearing for countless businesses and residents and heading up to the country for relaxing weekends at his trailer. The tours he gave to visiting family and friends became legendary: “Dickey Dowden Tours”. Dickey’s laugh, smile and personality will forever fill the void of his passing. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road. Visitation from 12-2pm Saturday March 5, 2016. Cremation and private family service to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Burry, L. Claude

Leeland Claude Burry July 12, 1922 – January 16, 2016. Please join us for a Memorial Service to celebrate the life of the late L. Claude Burry, on Saturday, March 19th at St. John’s West Salvation Army Corps, 174 Mundy Pond Rd. Visitation 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in the church hall. Service at 11:30 a.m. followed by a short reception in the church YP Hall. Committal at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

Brown, Henry

Henry Brown. September 26, 1932 – March 11, 2016. Passed peacefully away in his sleep at home, at the age of 83, Henry Brown of Whitehaven, England, residing in St. John’s since 1971. Predeceased by his parents Henry and Elizabeth; siblings Isabel, William, Jean and Leonard. Leaving to mourn with loving memories his wife Elsie Brown; daughters Yvonne Brown, Gloria Ryan; sons Stephen Brown (Lynn), and Gary Brown (Jennifer); grandchildren Natasha, Renee (Andrew), Chris (Yana), Brittany, Andrew, Tyler (Yasmine), Bradyn (Chelsey), Kaitlyn (Josh), Sophia, and Jacob; great grandson Ayden; special niece and nephew Dora and Brian; special friends Mike and Anthea Donnan; as well as extended family in England. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Sunday, March 13 and Monday, March 14 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at the Anglican Cathedral on Tuesday, March 15 at 2 p.m. Flowers gratefully accepted, or donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Society, or the Dialysis Unit at the Waterford Hospital.

Whalen, Donald

Passed away suddenly at his home, Donald Bramwell Whalen, aged 68 years. Predeceased by his parents Henry and Emma, brother Alfred, and sister Margaret. Leaving to mourn his wife of 47 years, Caroline; son Paul (Jennifer); daughters Tanya (Walter), Nancy (Dale), and Jennifer (Todd); 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; brothers Eldred (Deanna), Robert (friend Sadie), Henry (Linda), and Gregory; Sisters Nina and Mona; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Thursday, March 17th, 2016 from 9 a.m – 9 p.m. A funeral service will take place in The Carnell Memorial Chapel on Friday, March 18th, 2016 at 2 p.m, with inurnment to follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Mercer, Ronald Wayne

Passed away peacefully on March 15, 2016, at the Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by his loving family, Ronald Wayne Mercer, aged 60 years. Predeceased by his parents Chesley and Clara; siblings Sylvia, Sandra and Billy; and niece Stacy Norman. Leaving to mourn his wife of 22 years, Diane; siblings Reg (Joan), Doug (Angie), Randy, Peggy (Lloyd), Roz, Diane (Glenn), Phyllis (Chris), and Bibs (Robbie); parents-in-law Margaret and George March; brother-in-law Ian (Marisa); and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and Friends. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at the Palliative Care Unit and Dr. Bruce Doulton. Funeral Service will be held on March 19, at 12:00 pm from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Forest Road Anglican Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of ones’ choice in his memory are welcome.

Hunt, Leonard Frank "Len"

Leonard Frank Hunt “Len”, age 87 years of St. John’s, passed peacefully away on March 15th, 2016 at Chancellor Park with his family at his side. Predeceased by parents, Harry and Elizabeth Hunt; sisters, Kathleen (Ian), Nance (Bert) and Grace; son-in-law Pastor Ross Sacrey; sister-in-law Ella. Leaving to mourn his loving wife of 64 years, Phyllis (Coultas); his children: Tony (Neena), Heather Mercer (Gerald), Elizabeth Garcia (Davie) and Terry (Mary); 8 grandchildren: Tim, Wendy, Sarina, Angela, Shawn, Kelly, Jacob and Nathan; 8 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Sophie Corcoran (Bill) and Ella Ortiz (Jose); his special furry companion Tippy; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Len moved his family from St. John’s to Baie Verte in 1963. During his 26 years in Baie Verte, Len was very active in community service. He was Commanding Officer of the R.C.S.C.C. Grenfell Sea Cadet Corp for 8 years, president of C.I.M. (Canadian Institute of Mining, Baie Verte Section) for 8 years, president of the Lions Club 1967-68, vice president of the Green Bay School Board, president of the Rattling Brook Curling Club for 15 years, executive member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 54, a member of the Anglican Church Choir as well as being director of several other Community Service activities. Len and his wife Phyllis retired to St. John’s on June 30th, 1989. On November 4th, 1989 he was presented with an honorary membership in the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, NL branch. Len and Phyllis started a cottage on Salmonier Line 10 years prior to retiring. When they retired to St. John’s they spent many enjoyable days relaxing with their new friends and neighbours who will miss him very much. Special thank you to the staff of Chancellor Park, especially Dr. Percy Crocker and his long term physician Dr. Andrew Hutton. Cremation has taken place. The family will be receiving visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 17th. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 18th, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from the Carnell Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Forest Road. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to charity of one’s choice.

Ryan, Donald (Donnie) Joseph Michael

Donald (Donnie) Joseph Michael Ryan Passed peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at the Health Science Centre, age 69 years. Predeceased by his parents John and Mae Ryan, brother Francis Ryan, sisters Kate Whitty and Patsy Jackman, nieces Deanie Whitty and Joanne Hayes. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Millie (nee Blackwood) of 46 years, daughters Jodi Ryan and Jennifer Rideout (Terry), the light of his life granddaughter Charlie Rideout and special furry friend Sydney, brother John Ryan (Marie), sisters Joan Hogan (Ed), Sheila Gladney and Eileen Hayes, special Angel and friend Jarrett Caines, fondly missed by brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews, and all his car buddies. The family would like to express a sincere thank you to the Doctors and Nurses in the ICU of the Health Science Centre. Cremation has taken place. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral home 329 Freshwater Rd. on Wednesday and Thursday from 2 – 4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday March 18, 2016 at Corpus Christi Parish at 9:30 a.m. In Lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or Cerebral Palsy Association of N.L.

Benson, Leslie Gilbert

Passed peacefully away at Agnes Pratt in the presence of his loving family on March 17, 2016, Leslie Benson, aged 85 years. Predeceased by his parents Anastasia and William; and brothers William and Harvey. Leaving to mourn with loving memories his devoted and loving wife of 55 years June; daughters Anne (David) Power and Susan (Brian) Maynard; grandchildren Andrew (Nicole), Peter and Jane; special friend Elwood Pitcher; and his siblings Olga (Joe) Benson, Sylvia (Doug) Phelan and Roy (Betty) Benson; also a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. A special thank you to the staff of Agnes Pratt especially Stella Burry wing. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Monday March 21 and Tuesday March 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service to be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel on Wednesday March 23 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at the Anglican Cemetery, Kenmount Road. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Leslie’s name may be made to Agnes Pratt or a charity of one’s choice.
