Collingwood, Nelson Boyd
Nelson Boyd Collingwood, May 15, 1921- February 22, 2016 - It is with great sadness that the family of Nelson Boyd Collingwood announce his peaceful passing on February 22nd at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in the presence of his loving family. Nelson married the love of his life, Mildred, over 72 years ago in 1943. Not long after they married, they ran Collingwood’s U Serve U and Collingwood’s Dry Goods on LeMarchant Road between 1945 and 1970. They spent a great deal of memorable time together visiting with family and friends, gardening, hunting and fishing at their cabin at Rhody’s Pond and lived on Masonic Drive in Mt. Pearl for over 30 years. Through his 94 years, Nelson was a devoted fan of curling and the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his younger years, Nelson was an avid hunter and cherished his memories on the barrens with Nipper, his beloved Blue Belton English Setter. He fished into his latter years as it was a cherished tradition to eat trout at the cabin on his birthday. He was an excellent gardener and very much enjoyed the meals that Mildred cooked with the vegetables they grew together. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be dearly remembered for his sense of humour, his kindness, generosity and the way in which he made us all feel like we were so special to him. He loved his wife fiercely and Mildred holds dear their many years of adventure, togetherness, helping each other through life’s ups and downs, laughing and enjoying wonderful meals together with family around them. Nelson held a strong and enduring faith in God and a special connection to the Anglican Cathedral. Visits from Deal Noel, Reverend Paul and Canon Sheppard were of great comfort to him and his family in recent weeks. For over 20 years, Mildred and Nelson volunteered their time to the Emmaus House Food Bank. Nelson believed strongly in helping others and enjoyed the fellowship of volunteerism. With his wonderful wife, Nelson had the love of a small but special family; children Joan (Lloyd), Anne (Gerry), five grandchildren; Stephen, Susan (Gord), Christopher (Andreia), Michelle (Doug), Allison (Jason). Seven great grandchildren; Jessica, Jack, Josh, Jared, Ben, Raquel and Violeta. Previously deceased are Nelson’s mother and father Mildred and Edward, sister Mary and brother Arthur. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s on Freshwater Rd. between 2pm-9pm on Wednesday, February 24th and the Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 25th at 2pm at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, St. John’s. Heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Dr. Karl Misik, his staff and the nursing staff of 7 East at St. Clare’s, as well as Dr. Iqbal and her team. We extend our special thanks to special friends Levine, Shirley, Linda, Dianne and Queenie. Donations can be made to Emmaus House or a charity of your choice, no flowers by request.
