MURPHY, Elizabeth – Passed peacefully away at the Health Science Centre, September 16, 2007, Elizabeth Murphy (Butler) of Bell Island. Predeceased by her parents, James and Julia Butler; brothers: Patrick and Michael; sister, Mary Brazil; son, Keith and daughter, Dana. Leaving to mourn her ever loving husband, Daniel; her sons: Gerard (Beverley), Sean (Lorraine), Danny; her daughters: Jeannie (Douglas Hughes), Julia (Robert Whelan), Kelly (Sean Bickford); her grandchildren: Adam, Melissa, Joshua, Mark, Shannon, Sean, Ryan, Julianna, Seana and Aaron; her sisters: Helen Pitts, Alice Carroll and Patricia Neville; and a large circle of extended family and friends. Resting at Pendergast’s Funeral Home, Bell Island. Visitation on Tuesday from 12 noon to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, September 19th at 2 p.m. in St. Michael’s Church. Interment in R.C. Cemetery Bell Island. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

STRONG, Zachary Michael – Died as a result of a tragic accident on Monday, September 17, 2007. Leaving with fond and treasured memories, mother Karen and husband Les Coultas; father Michael and wife Tammy Strong; brothers: Joshua Coultas, Ryan and Tyler Chaulk; grandparents: James and Catherine Murphy, George and Phyllis Strong and Nanny Clara Coultas; great-grandmother Mildred Adams; also a large circle of relatives, friends and classmates in Grade Two at Roncalli Elementary School. The family is receiving visitors at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Wednesday 7-9 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Funeral services to be held at Gower Street United Church on Friday at 2 p.m. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are gratefully accepted and donations may be made to the Janeway Children’s Hospital.

DOWNER, Dr. Winnifred Anne – Passed peacefully away in Corner Brook on July 29, 2007. A memorial Mass will be held in her honour at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Cres. All are welcome to join her family and friends in a celebration of Wynanne’s life. A reception will follow.

HICKEY, Marlene (nee Healey) – Passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, August 11, 2007, age 69 years. Predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Basil J. Hickey (November 2005) and her parents Leo P. and Mary Healey. Beloved mother of Tom (Lori) and Katharine (Jim Walsh) . Dearest Nana to Alison and Grace Walsh. Sisters Eleanor (Ron Casey), Toni (Don Morrell, Ottawa) and brother Gerard Healey (Robyn) . Sisters-in-law Pauline and Laura Hickey, and a large and caring extended family and circle of friends. Marlene was an exceptional person who touched many lives, other than those of her families. A longstanding member of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Marlene cherished her music, friendships, her bridge crowd and her darling little granddaughters. Her life was full – with many adventures and experiences waiting for her. She was an inspiration to any who had the privilege of meeting her. She will be sadly missed by all. Donations in Marlene’s memory may be made to the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. Visitation at Carnell’s Funeral Home on Sunday, August 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 and Monday, August 13 from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral to take place on Tuesday, August 14 at 9:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

HISCOCK, Josephine – (age 71) of Manuels. Passed away suddenly into the loving arms of Jesus, surrounded by her loving family and friends at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on Sunday, July 8, 2007. Predeceased by husband Kevin, two sons Michael and Keith, and sister Mena Hickey (Gary) . Left with fond and loving memories her devoted sons Chris (Betty) and Paul (Joan), and daughter-in-law Donna, her loving grandchildren Justin, Bradley, Krista, Cortney, Kevin and Mark; sisters Beth Ryan, Rose Stacey (Bob), Ethnea Guiney (Charles), and Tina Chaytor (Doug); as well as a large circle of nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Also her best friends Gail Miller and Mary Rideout and other friends too numerous to mention. No flowers by request but donations may be made in her memory to Holy Apostles Church Building Fund in Renews which was so dear to her heart. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Hickey’s Funeral Home in Kelligrews will be announced later.

KEENAN, Hugh (Harry) — On August 12, Hugh (Harry) Keenan passed peacefully away surrounded by those who loved him. He was born in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland on September 28, 1941. After attending teacher’s college he answered an ad looking for a teacher on “Fog” (Fogo) Island, Newfoundland. Thus began his time in this province. In 1969, he met his best friend, soulmate and lifelong partner, Agnes Hogan of Northern Bay. They were married and had five children: Mary Ann (Paul) Hounsell, Hugh (Celine), Robert (Janice), John Paul (Nancy) and Una. His family was the light of his life and he was very proud of all they had accomplished. The latest addition to his family, his granddaughter Margaux, filled him with great joy. In his teaching career, Harry taught in Tilting, Fogo Island, Northwest River, Cape Broyle and Paradise. During this time he touched the lives of many people. Throughout his life, Harry developed many lasting friendships. His life was full of love and laughter. It is with great sadness that we let him go. As he wished, Harry will be waking at his home on 27 Morris Ave., St. John’s on Tuesday from 10 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. On Wednesday he will be waking in his summer home in Northern Bay from 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 16 at 2 p.m. from Corpus Christi Church, Northern Bay. Interment will follow in the graveyard at Northern Bay. In lieu of flowers, Harry would prefer a donation be made to the S. MacMILLAN, Hugh Anthony – Passed suddenly away at his residence in Seal Cove on Friday, August 10, 2007, age 71 years. Founder of Mac-Mix Concrete Ltd. Leaving to mourn his wife Rebecca, son Jim and wife Gloria, daughter Donna Rideout and husband Boyd, three grandchildren: Anthony MacMillan, Rebecca and Trevor Rideout, six brothers: John (Edith), Francis (Shirley), Eddie (Sandra), Nova Scotia, Jim, Ronnie (Marlyn), Paul (Rita), Ontario, Janet (Kevin), New Brunswick, Betty (Ray), Australia, sister-in-law Doris Kennedy, brother-in-law Gordon Porter. Also nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. Visitation in the James J. Hickey Memorial Funeral Home, Kelligrews, on Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral service on Monday, August 13, 2007, at 11 a.m. in St. Peter's Anglican Church, Upper Gullies. KERRIVAN, Karen (nee Cox) — Guided lovingly home in the arms of the angels following a courageous battle with cancer, age 46 years. Predeceased in life by her father Ed Cox, mother Margaret, and stepfather Michael Young. Karen spent her life on this Earth doing good, from caring for her younger siblings, then for her own children, and beyond. Her numerous acts of kindness extended from her volunteer work at St. Edward’s Elementary when Kayla and Kurtis began school and continued on through various organizations and local fundraising committees. Karen was a person who could always be called upon to help and did so with a kind and generous heart. She was a true inspiration to everyone she met. She will be sadly missed by her husband Calvin of 21 years, her children Kurtis (Vicki), Kayla, Jason (Lori) and Kelly and precious granddaughter Kailey, her sisters Theresa (Rick) and Margie (Wayne), her brothers Eddie (Theresa), Johnny (Sharon), Mike (Elizabeth), Billy (Joanna), and Jamie (Denise), her mother-in-law Sadie Kerrivan, sister-in-law Sandra (John) and brother-in-law Jerome (Rose), 11 nephews, four nieces, two special friends, Marg Power and Ann Marie Collins and a large circle of extended family and friends. A special thank-you to the doctors and nurses at the Cancer Clinic, HSC 4 North A and Placentia Health Care Centre who took good care of Karen throughout her year-long journey in her battle with cancer. Resting at Maher’s Funeral Home on Monday 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. and Tuesday 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. Funeral Mass on Wednesday, August 15 at Sacred Heart Church, Placentia at 2:30 p.m. Interment to follow at Dermot McGettigan Memorial Cemetery, Southeast, Placentia. NEWHOOK, Martha Elizabeth — On August 11, 2007 our darling Martha lost her courageous battle with cancer. Martha Elizabeth Newhook of St. Johns, age 67 years, passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre in the presence of her family. Left with treasured memories her loving and devoted husband of 46 years, Arthur, cherished son Terry, precious mother Julie Gosse, Green Mountain Lodge, Norman's Cove, sisters Ruby (George) Smith, Everett, Ontario, Marie (Arch) Smith, Norman's Cove, Helen (Attwood) Smith, Norman's Cove; brothers/sisters-in-law, Una (Bill) Smith, Ontario, Lewis (Sandy) Newhook, Ontario, Sheila (Bob, deceased) Newhook, Ontario, Melvin (Flo) Newhook, Arnold's Cove, Jonas (Rosalind) Newhook, Arnold's Cove, Otto (Vera) Newhook, Ontario, Rex (Sheila) Newhook, Norman's Cove, Wallace Newhook, Norman's Cove, Rose (Eric) Butt, Ontario, Sadie Newhook, Norman's Cove, aunts Mahalla Reid, Old Shop, Eva Drover, Mount Pearl, also a large number of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and many friends. Predeceased by sister Ada Vokey October, 1991 and father Hezakiah Gosse, February, 1992. Martha was a long-time employee of Woolco/Wal-Mart and along with Arthur and her puppy Mitzi were members of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program. Resting at Holloway's Funeral Home, Whitbourne on Monday, Aug. 13 from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and at the Good Shepherd Church, Norman's Cove from 7:00 p.m., Aug. 13 until time of funeral (3:00 p.m.) on Aug. 14. PEARCE, Austin — Passed away peacefully after a short illness on August 12th, 2007 at the Health Sciences Centre. Mr. Austin Pearce, age 73 years. Predeceased by his wife Daphne in 1993. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories his three children: daughter Sharon O’Toole (John), two sons, Glen and Greg (Denise); sister Ann O’Grady. Also leaving behind five grandchildren and a large circle of family and friends. By Austin’s request cremation has taken place. Inurnment to follow at the Anglican cemetery, Kenmount Rd. POWER, James Joseph — Passed away suddenly at his home in St. Catherine’s, St. Mary’s Bay, on Saturday, August 11th, 2007, James Joseph Power, aged 73 years. Left with fond and loving memories are his devoted wife of 52 years, Elsie (nee Wade), his two sons: David (Sharon), Brian (Stacy), four daughters: Sandra (Eugene McDonald), Elaine (Walt Oakley), Brenda (Allan Kielley), Susan (Randy Grace), 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters: Mary (Gerard Walsh), Bernadette (Frank Queen), one brother, Anthony (Elsie), sister-in-law: Annie Power and mother-in-law: Elizabeth Wade, and a large circle of extended family and friends. Pre-deceased by brothers: Alphonsus, Edward and sisters: Rita Lively and Theresa Walsh. PRETTY, Ernest Samuel (February 13, 1935 - August 11, 2007) — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest Pretty at the Miller Centre after a short illness on Saturday, August 11, 2007. Ernest Pretty in his 72nd year. Predeceased by his father Wilfred (1985), his mother Edith (2000), brothers Douglas (1997) and Charles (2004) . Lovingly remembered by brothers Wesley (Joan) and Eugene (Muriel) and sister-in-law Marie Pretty. Also cherishing fond memories, his nieces and nephews; Charlotte, Lisa, Andrea, Joanne, Catherine, Christopher, Philip, Stephanie, Eugene and Robert; Aunt Mimie (Brushett), as well as a number of other relatives and friends.
