MADDEN, Charles Armand – (aged 59 years) - Passed away suddenly at his home on September 15, 2007. Predeceased by his wife Shirley (nee Pearce); mother Mary; father Charles; brothers: Patrick and Daniel. Leaving to mourn his passing, his only daughter Nancy (Tom Lewis); grandchildren: David Charles, Brandon Tyler and Emma Marie; sisters: Mary Bedard and Kay (Agnes Fuller); brothers: Brendan and Dennis; numerous other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. Visitation to be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday and 10-12 noon on Wednesday. Mass of Christian burial to be held on Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Teresa’s Parish, Mundy Pond Road. Interment to follow at St. Agnes Catholic Cemetery, Pouch Cove. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

MAY, Phyllis — Passed peacefully away at Clarke’s Beach Pentecostal Senior Citizen’s Home on Sunday, September 16, 2007, Phyllis May of Bay Roberts, aged 78 years. Predeceased by her parents, Simon and Annie Ivany (nee Garland) and brother William G. (Irene) Ivany; brothers-in-law: Realf Saxton and Water Finch. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her husband Eric of 52 years; sons: Eric (Jean), Robert (Rowena), and David (Liz); sisters: Dolores Saxton and Mary Finch; brothers: Gerard (Dulcie), Raymond (Mary) and Doug (Dorothy); grandchildren: Erin (Justin), Allison, Ericka, Rebecca, Nicholas and Jonas; great-grandchild Leah, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. Special thanks to Verna Bowering for all her care and support, as well as to all of Phyllis’ caregivers over the last number of years. Visitation will take place at Moore’s Funeral Home, Bay Roberts 2 p.m. - 5 p.m., 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2007; 10 a.m. - 12 noon Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Funeral Mass 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2007 from the Holy Redeemer R.C. Church, Bay Roberts. Cremation has taken place. Interment to take place at St. Matthew’s Anglican Cemetery, Bay Roberts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.

MURPHY, Elizabeth (Butler) – Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre, September 16, 2007, Elizabeth Murphy (Butler) of Bell Island. Predeceased by her parents, James and Julia Butler; brothers: Patrick and Michael; sister Mary Brazil; son Keith and daughter Dana. Leaving to mourn her ever loving husband Daniel; her sons: Gerard (Beverley), Sean (Lorraine), Danny; her daughters: Jeannie (Douglas Hughes), Julie (Robert Whelan), Kelly (Sean Bickford); her grandchildren: Melissa, Joshua, Mark, Shannon, Sean, Ryan, Julianna, Seana and Aaron; her sisters: Helen Pitts, Alice Carroll and Patricia Neville, and a large circle of extended family and friends. Resting at Pendergast’s Funeral Home, Bell Island. Visitation on Tuesday from 12 noon to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, September 19th at 2 p.m. in St. Michael’s Church. Interment in R.C. Cemetery, Bell Island. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

PIKE, Arthur N. – Passed away suddenly, Retired Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Sergeant at the Grand Bank Cottage Hospital on Monday, September 17, 2007, Arthur Pike, aged 69 years. Predeceased by wife Joyce; parents, Eugene and Bertha; brothers: Gerald and Clayton and sister Louise. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife, Marjorie; sons: Barry (Cherry), Rick (Donna) and Craig (Joan); daughters: Dana Spurvey (Harold) and Shelly; step-daughter Joan Caines (John); grandchildren: Aubrey and Jamie Spurvey, Andrew and Jeffery Pike, Ryan and Victoria Pike and Karlee Pike; brothers: Ed (Gertie) and Cyril (Mae); brothers-in-law: Bill Harding (Lynn) and Oscar Mosdell; sister-in-law Gladys Pike and special friend Tina French. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place at Wesley United Church on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in Arthur’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

BOWERING, Howard M. (V01 HMB) – Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Centre on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 after a lengthy illness, of Foxtrap, age 71 years. He was a retired employee of the Canadian Coast Guard. Predeceased by his wife Phyllis (April 18, 2005) . Left with fond and loving memories, sons: Keith (Susan), Dundalk, Ontario, Glenn and Terry at home; daughters: Beverly, Mississauga, Ontario and Janice at home; precious grandchildren: Curtis, Mitchell and Shauna; brothers: Wallace (Elsie), Coley’s Point, Heber (Joyce), Gander, Calvin (Sherry), Gander, Ed (Audrey), Birchy Bay, Bill (Lorraine), Point Leamington; sisters: Gwen (Calvin Ralph), Port de Grave and Sylvia (Henry Mercer), Bay Roberts; special aunt, Gwen Bowering and family friend Eleanor Bowering; brother-in-law Bill Smith (Mary), Marystown; sisters-in-law: Stella Ernest, Albany, New York, Mary Ellen Power and Patricia Smith, Marystown; special friends: Amy and Eric Dodge, Ray and Daphne Rideout and Charlie Barnes. BUDDEN, Margaret Lillian (nee Bishop) – Passed peacefully away in the presence of her family at the L.A. Miller Centre, Palliative Care Unit, on September 18, 2007, Margaret Lillian Budden (nee Bishop), aged 68 years. Predeceased by her parents, Robert and Miriam Bishop, and her brother Fred. Leaving to mourn her husband of 48 years, George; daughters: Janice (Mike Fleet) of Brockville, Ontario, Jennifer (Bill Hunt) of St. John’s and Joanne (Bob Carter) of Halifax, Nova Scotia; son Geoff and daughter-in-law Suanne Reid of St. John’s; cherished grandchildren: Sarah Fleet, Joshua and Graham Hunt, Elizabeth and Daniel Carter, and Laura and Erica Budden; special friends, Mary and Merv Andrews; as well as a large circle of family and friends. Resting at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road with visitation Wednesday, September 19, 2007 from 1-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place from St. Mark’s Anglican Church, 203 Logy Bay Road, Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 10 a.m. Interment at the Anglican Cemetery in Port Rexton, Friday, September 21, 2007 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the St. Mark’s Outreach Fund, providing assistance to individuals in the wider community who find themselves in need.

CLENCH, Raymond – Passed peacefully away at the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Monday, September 17, 2007, Raymond Clench of Shoal Harbour, aged 87 years. Predeceased by wife Dollie; son Billy; grandson David Ploughman. Left with fond and loving memories his daughters: Edna Ploughman (Bob), Verna Pelley (Brian), Velma Percy (Roy); sons: David (Juanita), Don (Audrey Ann), Charlie; daughter-in-law Betty Osmond; special friend Dolly Peddle; special sister, Barbara Warren; sister Florence Tuck (Baxter); brothers: Alex Clench (Ruby) Ed Clench (Phyllis); fifteen grandchildren: six great-grandchildren and a large number of relatives and friends. Resting at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville. Visitation Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be on Thursday, September 20, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the United Church, Shoal Harbour with interment to follow at the United Cemetery, Church Road, Shoal Harbour. In his memory, flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Daffodil Place, St. John’s.

FOLEY, Pierce Joseph – 1943 - 2007. It is with great sadness that the family of the late Pierce Foley announce his passing at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Center, in Grand Falls-Windsor, on Sunday, September 16, 2007 at the age of 63. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2502, and was also known throughout the area for his accordion playing. Pierce retired from St. Michael’s High School and in recent years has been teaching at CNA. He is predeceased by parents Philip and Mary Ellen Foley. Left with fond and loving memories are his wife of 38 years Mary Margaret; son Craig (Nadina); daughters: Deanne Kenny, Jennifer, and Heather (Peter Hicks) . Also leaving to mourn brother Gerald (Shirley); grandchildren: Jessica, Carter, Aiden, Katie and Jadeyn; Aunt Loretta Kelly; brothers-in-law: William (Peggy) and Richard (Gwenenne); sisters-in-law: Jean, Monica (Ewen Newhook); nieces and nephews: Stephanie, Jason, Michelle, Jill, Christopher, Susan, Katherine, Richard, Timothy, Meghan, and Amanda, along with a large circle of relatives and friends. Bishop Martin Currie, Father Colbert, and Father Joy conducted the funeral Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on September 19, 2007. Interment was at the Interfaith Cemetery. Pallbearers were Ed Power, Basil Lane, Bill King, Ewen Newhook, Lawrence Foley and Leo McGrath. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Tremblett, Dave Barker and Don Pelley. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Jim Maidment of Central Funeral Homes.
