MORRISSEY, Mildred Ruth (nee Ryan) – Born in St. John’s, NL, on February 17, 1922. Passed peacefully away, surrounded by her loving family at the Leonard A. Miller Center, on August 13, 2007. Predeceased by her husband Gerald, parents: Enos and Ethel Ryan, sisters: Evelyn Gosse and Phyllis Kluckow, brothers: Fred and Herb, half-sister Lily and half-brother Jim. Devoted mother of Diana Coady (Ron), Gerry and Ron (Lynn). Loving grandmother of Mary Lou, Ronnie, Danny, Heather, Travis and Kyle. Dear sister of Ed Ryan, Jerry (Marie), Mabel Mikulik, Marg Smith, Ethel Bonner, Joan Klausmann (Erwin), Horst Kluckow, and their families; special friends: Bill and Helen Coady, Betty Coady and Shirley Reid. Also leaving behind are nieces, nephews, cousins and a great circle of friends. MUGFORD, Byron – Passed peacefully away at his home in Mapbridge, BC., after a lengthy battle with cancer on August 5, 2007, surrounded by loved ones. Predeceased by his parents Warren and Selina Mugford, niece Connie Mugford, in-laws William and Eva Drover and sister-in-law Margaret White. Leaving to mourn with fond loving memories his wife Ada Mugford; two sons: Greg (Desiree), Steven (Melissa); his pride and joy three loving granddaughters: Margaret, Kelsie and Megan. (Judy since deceased); sister-in-law Eileen (Ken); six brothers-in-law: Roy (Linda), Harvey (Ethel), Randolph (Barbra), Derek (Marcella), Ray (Susan), John (Irene) . Also a large number of other relatives and friends. Resting at Hussey’s Funeral Home, Upper Island Cove, August 17, 2007 from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-10 p.m. Memorial Service will take place at Hussey’s Funeral Home with interment to follow at St. Peter’s Anglican Cemetery, Upper Island Cove, on August 18, 2007 at 2 p.m.
O’BRIEN, Honorah (Nora) Marie – On August 13, 2007, Honorah (Nora) Marie O’Brien (nee Duke), a kind and gentle mother, passed peacefully away at her home, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.
Nora was born in Fox Harbour, Placentia Bay in 1924. At the age of 16, she moved to St. John’s to attend Littledale College. A year later, she enrolled in the General Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation, she met and married her husband Jim. Together they raised seven children. Nora returned to nursing in 1968 and enjoyed a long and satisfying career at the Waterford Hospital.
Predeceased by her parents Isaac and Sarah and stepmother Susie, husband James and son Jim (Darlene) .
Leaving to mourn daughters: Nora Bartlett (Sam), Margaret Hand (Jim d.), Eleanor Dyer (Jeff), Maureen Penney (Barry), Ann Verch (Sheldon) and Susan Harvey (John); brothers: Patrick Duke (Agnes) and Francis Duke (Cecilia); grandchildren: Mary Ann, Sam, Denise, Jim, Natalie, Isaac, David, Joe, Brian, Danielle, Jeremy, Scot, Sarah and Rebecca; great-grandchildren: Adam, Andrew, Mari, Amber, Emily, Austin and Addison.

DEAN, Bonita Joan – Passed peacefully away at her residence in Caplin Cove on August 11, 2007, in her 65th year. Predeceased by parents Frank and Harriett Hunt; sisters: Elizabeth Hunt and Marie Cannings; brothers: Harry Hunt and Mae Hunt. Left to mourn with fond and loving memories are her husband Lloyd of 40 years; daughter Roxane; son Rodney; sister Diane (Russ Poole); brother Robert Hunt (Jackie); special nieces and nephews and a large circle of family and friends. Rev. Lorraine Moores and Rev. Judy Squires will be conducting the funeral service at Bethany United Church in Southport at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2007. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Fewer’s Funeral Home. Interment to follow at United Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are nephews: Bradley Poole, Johnny Dean, Michael Dean and Tony Dean along with brother-in-law Alonzo Dean and special friend Ed Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers (Caregivers) are Betty Stringer, Joan Peddle, Francis Whalen and Florence Baker. Donations in her memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
KEENAN, Hugh (Harry) — On August 12, Hugh (Harry) Keenan passed peacefully away surrounded by those who loved him. He was born in Ballycastle, Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland on September 28, 1941. After attending teacher’s college he answered an ad looking for a teacher on “Fog” (Fogo) Island, Newfoundland. Thus began his time in this province. In 1969, he met his best friend, soulmate and lifelong partner, Agnes Hogan of Northern Bay. They were married and had five children: Mary Ann (Paul) Hounsell, Hugh (Celine), Robert (Janice), John Paul (Nancy) and Una. His family was the light of his life and he was very proud of all they had accomplished. The latest addition to his family, his granddaughter Margaux, filled him with great joy. In his teaching career, Harry taught in Tilting, Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island, Northwest River, Cape Broyle and Paradise. During this time he touched the lives of many people. Throughout his life, Harry developed many lasting friendships. His life was full of love and laughter. It is with great sadness that we let him go. As he wished, Harry will be waking at his home on 27 Morris Ave., St. John’s on Tuesday from 10 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. On Wednesday he will be waking at his summer home in Northern Bay from 11 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, August 16 at 2 p.m. from Corpus Christi Church, Northern Bay. Interment will follow in the graveyard at Northern Bay. In lieu of flowers, Harry would prefer a donation be made to the Sr. Mae Kierans, African Fund, c/o Sr. Shirley Anderson at St. Joseph Mother House, 2025 Main Street West, North Bay, Ontario, P1B 2X6 or a charity of one’s choice.
POWER, James Joseph — Passed away suddenly at his home in St. Catherine’s, St. Mary’s Bay, on Saturday, August 11th, 2007, James Joseph Power, aged 73 years. Left with fond and loving memories are his devoted wife of 52 years, Elsie (nee Wade), his two sons: David (Sharon), Brian (Stacy), four daughters: Sandra (Eugene McDonald), Elaine (Walt Oakley), Brenda (Allan Kielley), Susan (Randy Grace), eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters: Mary (Gerard Walsh), Bernadette (Frank Queen), one brother, Anthony (Elsie), sister-in-law: Annie Power and mother-in-law: Elizabeth Wade, and a large circle of extended family and friends. Pre-deceased by brothers: Alphonsus, Edward and sisters: Rita Lively and Theresa Walsh. SPURRELL, David Wilfred — Passed peacefully away on August 12th in the presence of his family after a courageous battle with cancer, David Wilfred Spurrell, age 47 years. Predeceased by his father Danny (2005), and grandfather Wilfred (2005) . Leaving to mourn with cherished memories are his mom June Maxine Spurrell (nee Evans), sister Grace (Derrick) Gullage, two brothers, Gordon (Daphne) and Robert (Denise), also nieces and nephews, Penny, Nichole, and Eugene Spurrell, Dannielle and Matthew Spurrell and Kathyrn and Darrell Gullage. A very special aunt Faith (Esau) Stagg and uncles Bram (Shirley) Spurrell, Herb deceased (Sandy) Spurrell in Ontario. Also three cousins in Ontario and a great-aunt, Blanch Mitchell, St. John’s, other relatives and friends. Especially his cousin Marg Williams and his friend Renée Kieley, care givers Marion, Mondella and Renée, and staff and friends of the Hub. DOWNER, Dr. Winnifred Anne – Passed peacefully away in Corner Brook on July 29, 2007. A memorial Mass will be held in her honour at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at St. Pius X Church, Smithville Cres. All are welcome to join her family and friends in a celebration of Wynanne’s life. A reception will follow.
