Nilson, Hon. John
New Democrat MLA, Regina Lakeview
John T. Nilson was born in Saskatoon and raised in Western Canada. John lived in a number of communities from Medstead, Prince Albert, North Vancouver, Edmonton and St. Louis, Missouri to New Westminster, British Columbia.
John obtained his education at Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Washington, University of Oslo, Norway and St. Olaf College in Minnesota, prior to obtaining his law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1977. He was admitted to the Bar in British Columbia in 1978 and in Saskatchewan in 1979. He practised law and mediation with MacPherson, Leslie & Tyerman from 1978 until he was elected as MLA for the Regina Lakeview Constituency in June, 1995. He was appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Justice and Attorney General in November, 1995.
John is a memeber of the Law Society of Saskatchewan, the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association, Family Mediation Canada and Mediation Saskatchewan. He has served with committees established to deal with Law Reform, Family Law, Health Law, Regina Planning, Crime Prevention, Urban Safety, the Establishment of Crime Prevention, Federal Justice Consultation on Sentencing and Proposed Amendments to the Young Offenders Act. He has served on the Advisory Boards for Social Services Review, Mediation Implementation, Victims of Domestic Violence and has been a member of the Boards of Family Service Bureau, United Way Lawyer's Campaign, Native Heritage Foundation, Church Council on Justice and Corrections, and the National Church Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
John was Consul of Norway for Saskatchewan from 1991 to 1995 and Acting Consul of Denmark for Saskatchewan from July 1994 to 1995.
John is an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and the Scandinavian Club of Regina, and many community organizations. He and his wife, Linda, have two daughters, Ingrid and Solveig. They live in Regina Lakeview, near the Legislature, and farm north of Parkbeg.
