Nelson, Hon. Patricia
Progressive Conservative MLA, Calgary-Foothills
Patricia Nelson (formerly Patricia Black) was born and raised in Calgary. She graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
She was first elected MLA for Calgary-Foothills in March of 1989, was re-elected in June 1993 and again in March 1997.
Patricia Nelson was first appointed Minister of Energy on December 15, 1992, a position she held until March 26, 1997 when she was appointed Minister of Economic Development and Tourism. She has served as Deputy Government House Leader since December 1993. Mrs. Nelson is also member of Treasury Board. She serves as vice-chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Jobs and Economy. Mrs. Nelson has served on five select standing committees &emdash; Private Bills (Chair), Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund Act, Public Accounts, Members' Services, and Electoral Boundaries. She has also been vice-chair of two caucus committees (Forestry and Natural Resources, and Health), and served on five others &emdash; Agenda and Priorities, Economic Affairs, Environment, Calgary Caucus and House Strategy. As well she has served on two Standing Committees &emdash; Financial Planning, and Natural Resources and Sustainable Development.
Patricia Nelson has 15 years' experience in the oil and gas industry. She previously was controller of Sabre Energy Ltd. and Petroterra Natural Resources Ltd., and the Manager of Financial Control with Suncor Inc.
Patricia Nelson has been active in community and business groups, including the United Way, Cancer Crusade Fund, Red Shield Appeal and the Petroleum Accounting Society of Canada. She is a former member of the board of the Federal Business Development Bank and past chair of the bank's regional advisory group.
Mrs. Nelson is married to former Calgary MLA Stan Nelson. The couple make their home in Calgary with Mrs. Nelson's son Troy.
