Progressive Conservative MLA, Calgarv Nose Creek
Gary G. Mar was born in Calgary on July 26, 1962. He obtained his Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) at the University of Calgary in 1984 and his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Alberta in 1987.
From 1987 to 1990, Mr. Mar practised civil and criminal law with MacKimmie Matthews, Barristers and Solicitors, Calgary. Between 1990 and 1992, he practised corporate, commercial and real estate law with Code Hunter, Barristers and Solicitors, Calgary. Mr. Mar subsequently operated his own general law practice in Calgary and contributed to the Annotated Rules of Court.
Mr. Mar is active with the Chinese community in Calgary and served as Director of the Sein Lok Society from 1987-1993, and as Vice-President of the Chinatown Development Foundation from 1990-1993. The Sein Lok Society is a trustee of Sein Lok Park and a promoter of Chinese culture, while the Chinatown Development Foundation operates an 88-unit low-income housing facility. He has also served as a volunteer with Calgary Legal Guidance which provides legal services to low-income persons.
Mr. Mar was elected MLA for Calgary Nose Creek in the provincial election held on June 15, 1993. He served as Minister of Community Development from June 30, 1993 to May 31, 1996. Mr. Mar was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1994.
Mr. Mar has served as Minister of Education since May 31, 1996. He is also Vice-chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Education and Training, a member of the Agenda and Priorities Committee and the Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection Standing Policy Committee.
Mr. Mar is single and lives in Calgary.
