Orcherton, Steve
New Democrat MLA, Victoria - Hillside
Steve Orcherton was elected MLA for Victoria-Hillside in the 1996 general election, and currently serves as Deputy Whip for Government Caucus. He is Chair of the Select Standing Committee on Energy, Mines, Forests and Petroleum Resources. He also serves on the Board of the British Columbia Buildings Corporation.
Born in Fort Churchill, Manitoba in 1955, Mr. Orcherton moved with his family to Victoria at age two. He has lived and remained active in the community for over 40 years.
A certified cook by trade, Steve worked at the Glendale Lodge prior to taking over the full-time position as Secretary-Treasurer of the Victoria Labour Council in 1989. He has served the community in many other professional roles, including: Manager of the Union Centre, Member of the Board of Governors of Camosun College, Secretary of the Victoria Building Cooperative Union, Member of the Board of Referees of the Unemployment Insurance Commission, and Organizer of the Victoria Labour Council Annual Labour Day Picnic. As well, he played an instrumental role in establishing the Workers Employment Standards Advocacy Program, the Workers with Disabilities Project, and the Workers Unemployment Insurance Advisory. He was also a founder of the Annual Slowpitch Tournament of Hope, and Vice President of the Victoria Labour Council Credit Union.
Mr. Orcherton resides in Victoria with his wife, Peg and their four children, Levi, Caitlin, Mackenzie and Connor.
