Melchin, Gregory Knowles
Progressive Conservative MLA, Calgary North West
Greg Melchin was elected MLA for Calgary North West on March 11, 1997. The tremendous support he received from volunteers in the community led to his victory against a two-term incumbent and helped him to earn the second highest number of votes in the election. He currently serves as MLA representative to the Treasury Board, a Member of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services, a Member of the Public Accounts Committee, and a member of Montana/Alberta Boundary Advisory Committee.
Gregory Knowles Melchin was born in Raymond, Alberta on December 14, 1953. He has made northwest Calgary his home for most of his life and received his education in Calgary, graduating from James Fowler High School.
He attended Brigham Young University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degreein 1977. Greg's ability to speak French served him well during the two years he spent in France and Belgium for his church, prior to attending University.
Greg brings to the legislature 20 years of business and community experience. Greg articled for Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. Chartered Accountants (Calgary) before receiving his designation as Chartered Accountant. His training and interest in business led to a subsequent career in financial and business administration. Greg's accomplishments in business include: Branch Controller for Bennett & White Western Ltd., a commercial general contractor and developer throughout Western Canada (1980-1984); Chief Financial Officer for Adcorp Enterprises Ltd., offering video advertising to major companies and advertising agencies throughout Canada and United States (1985-1988); Vice President of Finance for Torode Realty Ltd., a national commercial real estate agency and property management company (1989-1996); and Partner in a small Alberta Oil and gas company.
He has volunteered to many youth organizations, serving for over 15 years as a Scout Leader and Committee Chairman with Boy Scouts of Canada, coaching basketball and assisting in softball and leadership training programs.
Greg has volunteered many years of service in the community through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. As a Bishop and leader, he provided marriage and financial counseling, organized youth sports programs, taught religious classes and coordinated disaster relief plans with the Cityof Calgary.
Greg is married to his wife, Helen and they have a family of five children, Rachelle, Jenny, Ross, Brad and Karla.
