Stevens, Q.C., Ron
Progressive Conservative MLA, Calgary-Glenmore
Ron Stevens was born in Empress, Alberta, in 1949. He obtained his post secondary education in Alberta: Bachelor of Arts (Political Science) at the University of Calgary in 1971; Bachelor of Laws at the University of Alberta in 1975.
Ron practised civil litigation law with Code Hunter Wittmann, Barristers and Solicitors, Calgary for 22 years and was a partner with the firm from 1979 until 1997. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1996. Ron also has acted as a mediator since 1991.
Ron has been very active in community affairs and has served as President of the Palliser Bayview Pumphill Community Association and as a Director of the Federation of Calgary Communities. He also served as Director and Vice Chairman of the Calgary Housing Authority, helping to administer some 2,800 Calgary housing units for low income persons and as a Director of Community Mediation Calgary Society, which offers mediation services as an alternative form of dispute resolution in community based situations.
On March 11, 1997, Ron was elected to his first term as MLA of Calgary Glenmore. He is currently a member on the following standing committees: Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing (Chair); Standing Policy Committee on Financial Planning and Human Resources; Public Accounts; Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund. Ron's membership on other committees includes: Montana Alberta Boundary Advisory Committee; Irrigation Act Review Committee; Not for Profit Tax Exemption Review Committee (Chair); Intellectual Infrastructure Partnership Program Review Team; Private Schools Funding Task Force (Chair); Health Information Protection Act Steering Committee (Chair); Select Special Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act Review Committee (Deputy Chair).
Ron and his wife Phyllis married in 1976 and have two children. The Stevens family have lived in Calgary Glenmore since 1980.
