Severtson, Gary
Progressive Conservative MLA, Innisfail-Sylvan Lake
Gary N. Severtson was born in Lethbridge on March 18, 1944 and educated in Innisfail.Gary Severtson has been an active farmer since 1963. He and his son Scott currently operate a cattle and grain operation. He also has worked as a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Pinzgauer Association, and with the Western Canadian Drought Review Board.
Mr. Severtson has a long history of involvement in the community, serving as a member of the Olds College Board of Governors (1982-1988), the Innisfail Co-op Board (1976-77), and the Royal Canadian Legion. Gary also served as a member of the Innisfail Hospital Board from 1976-1982 serving as Chair for two of those years. He is a former Director and Vice President of the Innisfail Jaycees, and former Chair of the Agriculture Development Review Committee. In addition Gary has been active in the Kneehill Valley 4-H Club, and as a coach with Innisfail Minor Hockey for ten years.
Gary Severtson was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Innisfail on March 20, 1989. He was re-elected on June 15, 1993 in the new constituency of Innisfail-Sylvan Lake; and again on March 11, 1997. Mr. Severtson currently serves as Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Education and Training, and Chair of the School Facilities Task Force. He also sits as a member of the Legislative Review Committee; the Standing Committee on Law and Regulations; and the Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing. During his tenure as an MLA, Gary has taken on a number of responsibilities, including: Deputy Whip; Chair, Agricultural Research Institute; Chair, Library Funding Review Task Group; Member, Standing Policy Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development; Member, House Strategies; Member, Legislative Offices; Member, Members' Services; Chair, Environmental Protection Advisory Committee; Member, Agriculture Caucus Committee; Member, Economic Affairs Caucus Committee; Member, Health Caucus Committee; Member, Select Standing Committee on Private Bills; Member, Select Standing Committee on Public Accounts; Member, Committee on Deregulation; Member, Special Select Committee on Constitutional Reform.
Gary and his wife Beverley Ann have two children. Their son Scott lives on the farm with his wife Lisa, son Levi and daughter Amy. Their son Corey and his wife Chrissy live in Calgary.
