Mary Mariah Fiander
87, Sydney
Mary Mariah Fiander, 87, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Sydney Mines, died Saturday, March 11, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Magdalen Islands, she was the daughter of the late Jabez and Melvina (Loungupee) Clarke.
She was an adherent of the Church of England. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are several nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by her husband, Melvin and by two sisters, Annie Clarke and Mabel Wilson, an infant sister, Helen and two brothers, Walter and James.
No visitation by request. Interment in St. Bartholomew’s Cemetery, Louisbourg, Wednesday, March 15, 2000.

Helen Jardine
80, North Sydney
Helen Grace Jardine, 80, a resident of Center Street, North Sydney, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Elizabeth (Robinson) Bona.
Helen was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, North Sydney.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary (Mrs. Bill MacPhee), Valerie (Mrs. Jack Bona), both of North Sydney, Gracie (Mrs. Blair Aylward), Fort McMurray, Alta.; two sons, Robert, Whycocomagh and Jack, Georges River; grandchildren, Freddie, Stevie, Tracey, Robin, Jacquline, Don, Stacey, Angela, Darrell, Billie, Liam, Michael and Denise. Also surviving are 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Yetman and Tootsie Bradbury, both of North Sydney and one brother, George, North Sydney.
She was predeceased by her husband, George Jardine, five brothers, William, Victor, Joseph, Arthur and Donald, two sisters, Madeline and Eva.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral mass, Friday, 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church with the Rev. Peter Piva officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Ethel Loretta May
78, Brs d'Or
Ethel May, 78, of 51 Church Rd., Bras d’Or, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Elizabeth (Farrow) May.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or.
She is survived by her husband, Philip; her sons, David (Judy) and Doug (Debbie), both in Hamilton, Ont.; her grandsons, Todd, Christopher, Mike and Bryan and her great-granddaughter, Natasha. Also surviving is her sister, Madonna, Florence, and her brothers, David, Bras d’Or and Leo, Hamilton.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Kathleen Alderson, Tina McNamara, Margaret Ronayne and Mildred King and her brothers, James, Arthur, Louie, Billy, Russell and Alex.
Visitation Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. At her request, there will be no funeral service. Following cremation burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
Mildred Rose Steele
88, Sydney
Rose Steele, 88, of 603 Kings Road, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Belle Isle, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late William and Katherine (Smith) Pride.
She was a graduate of the City Hospital School of Nursing before going overseas during the Second World War. Rose was a member of the Nursing Sisters Association of Canada. She was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 128, Whitney Pier. Rose joined the RCAMC in 1942 and served until July 1945 in England and Belgium as a nursing supervisor. Rose was awarded the CVSM Defence Medal, the 1939-45 Victory Medal, the France-German Star and was also awarded the Associate Royal Red Cross Medal in the Kings Honour List in London, England. Following the war, she returned to her nursing career in the St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney, as a supervisory nursing teacher.
Surviving are husband, Russell; one son, Bill (Coleen), Halifax; two granddaughters, Amanda and Melissa; three sisters, Audrey Murphy, Cornwall, Ont., Joyce MacCuspie, Port Hawkesbury, Ethel Theuerkauf, Sydney; one brother, Gordon Pride, Sudbury, Ont.
Predeceased by three sisters, Vera MacDonald, Winnifred Dakin, Ethel Pride, one brother, George Pride.
The late Mrs. Steele will have visitation at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level, today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Anthony Daniel Church with interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations may be made to the Veterans’ Comfort Fund or a charity of choice.
Cora Elizabeth Warren
72, Sydney
Cora Elizabeth Warren, 72, of Spruce Street, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Tuesday, March 14, 2000.
She is survived by her husband, Arthur; daughter, Linda Warren and her companion, Donald Abbott, Sydney; sons, Raymond (Laura), Ontario and John (Mary), New Waterford and grandchildren, Derrick Warren, Kris MacInnis, Scott Warren and Sean Warren.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Saturday, 11 a.m. with Capt. Morris Vincent officiating.
Hugh Agnus MacGillivary
82, Sydney
Hugh Angus MacGillivary, 82, of Breton Bay Nursing Home and formerly of East Bay, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at East Bay, he was the son of the late Alexander and Catherine (MacEachern) MacGillivary.
He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Parish, East Bay. Hughie was employed as a farmer most of his life in East Bay until retiring in 1986.
Surviving are two brothers, John Joseph (Mary) and Michael, both of Sydney; four nieces, Darlene (Leonard) Guy, Westmount, Joanne (Francois) Rouleau, East Bay, Juanita (Quentin) MacDonald, Sydney and Catherine MacGillivary, Sydney; three nephews, Alexander (Ann Marie), North Sydney, Clifford (Ann Marie), Glace Bay and Roderick, Sydney.
The late Mr. MacGillivary will have visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary’s Church, East Bay with the Rev. Francis Abbass officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, East Bay.
