Charles F. Ripley
85, Sydney
Charles F. Ripley, 85 of Charlotte Street, Sydney, passed away peacefully Saturday, Mar. 11, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was born in Windsor, N.S., son of the late Brian and Nancy (Mosher) Ripley.
He was retired from Scotia Wholesale after 40 years of service. Charles was a member of St. Andrews United Church and also fraternity organizations. He was Past Master of MacKay Lodge #113 AF and AM, Royal Arch Masons #10, Cape Breton Preceptory #43, Philae Temple, Halifax, Cape Breton Shrine Club, Sydney, and Queen Elizabeth Chapter #14 Order of Eastern Star. Charles was a veteran of the Second World War serving overseas as Captain in the Royal Canadian Artillery, and was Staff Officer with Third Militia Group Headquarters, Sydney, N.S.
Charles is survived by his loving wife Catherine (Kaye) (MacDonald) Ripley.
He was predeceased by his brother Frank.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Eastern Star Service will follow. Funeral service will be at 7:30 p.m. with Rev. Sharon Irving officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Philae Temple Shriners Children’s Travel Fund.
Vincent Baxter Robinson
Sydney
Vincent Baxter Robinson, 75, of Sydney, formerly of Hants County, died Saturday, Mar. 11, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Hants County, he was the son of the late John and Lillian (Baxter) Robinson.
He is survived by three daughters, Valerie, Sydney, Heather, Halifax and Sandra, Sydney, a son, Kenneth, Halifax, sisters, Mary Pasetka, Winnipeg, Man. and Hazel Hill, Colchester County. Also surviving are six grandchildren and his close friend Dorothy Gallant.
Predeceased by his wife the former Nellie Keating, a sister Jean and two brothers Marvin and Wesley.
The late Mrs. Robinson will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at First United Church with the Rev. Doug Pilsworth officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Sister Jean Annette Boyd
81, Antigonish
Sister Jean Annette Boyd, 81, Sister of St. Martha, Bethany Motherhouse, Antigonish, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at Bethany, in the 49th year of religious life.
Born in Antigonish, she was baptized Dolena, daughter of the late John Boyd, Big Marsh and Anne (MacGillivray) Boyd, Doctor’s Brook, Antigonish County.
Sister Jean Annette entered the Sisters of St. Martha, Aug. 15, 1948, with a secretarial diploma and five years work experience. After profession, Sr. Jean Annette continued in the secretarial field for 18 years in the offices of Catholic Charities and St. Rita’s Hospital, Sydney, St. Mary’s Hospital, Inverness, St. Michael’s Hospital, Lethbridge, Alta. Beginning in 1964 she served four years as a purchasing agent at Mineral Springs Hospital, Banff, and eight years as administrator of St. Mary’s Hospital, Inverness. She served briefly as assistant administrator at Bethany, then as receptionist of Bethany Retreat Center, followed by three years in the admitting office of St. Martha’s Hospital, Antigonish. From 1984 until her illness in the spring of 1998, Sr. Jean Annette served in the business office of Bethany. Sister was community leader for 11 years in three of the missions where she served.
Sister is survived by a sister, M. Margaret Hawley, Antigonish; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters, Mary Catherine Chisholm, Christina McKenna and Janet, brother, John Angus.
Visitation after 1:15 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany, where Bible Vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. March 15. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held March 16, at 2 p.m. in Bethany Chapel. Burial in Bethany Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to MacIsaac Funeral Home Ltd.
Elsie Veronica (Buckley) MacPherson
91, Glace Bay
Elsie V. (Buckley) McPherson, 91, a resident of Seaview Manor, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 12, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
She was a former resident of 52 Dominion St., Glace Bay, and for the last 3 1/2 years resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Fraser Simm, 55 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, Elsie was the daughter of the late Ben and Elizabeth (Buckley) Buckley. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish.
She was the loving mother to daughters, Murdie (Charles) Clements, Rita Bedecki, Linda (Fraser) Simm, all of Glace Bay, Elsie Ellsworth, Dominion, Sharron (Marvin) McMordie, Alberta; sons, Erville, Kevin (Evelyn), Everett (Betty), all of Glace Bay, Max (Rose), Alberta. Nana is survived by 40 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren; sister, Katy Jobe, Halifax; brother, Tom (Betty) Buckley, Glace Bay and sister-in-law, Peggy Buckley, Ontario. Elsie is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Twice married, Elsie was predeceased by her first husband, Murdock McQueen and by her second husband of 54 years, Max McPherson. She was also predeceased by sisters, Rita Gracie, Monica LeCointe and brother, John Buckley.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Wednesday, 2 p.m. in St. Anthony’s Church with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating.
Donations in Elsie’s memory may be made to the Seaview Manor or to a charity of choice.

Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Skinner
63, Baddeck
Elizabeth Anne (Betty) Skinner, 63, of Baddeck, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at the Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
Born in Baddeck, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Annie (MacInnis) Roberts.
She was a member of Greenwood United Church. Betty graduated from Camp Hill Medical Center in 1961 with her CNA diploma. She then moved to Toronto where she worked at Humber Memorial Hospital. Betty worked at Alderwood Rest Home for over 20 years. She was a former member of the Northside-Victoria Amalgamated School Board. She belonged to various community groups. She was a member of the South Haven Spinners, Weavers and Dyers. She was also a board member of the credit union. She was a very active member of the Victoria County Women’s Liberal Association and a faithful member of the Liberal Party! She was active with the Handcrafters Association and the Quilt Guild. She was a past elder in Greenwood United Church. Betty was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was Worthy Matron and District Deputy Grand Matron.
Betty was a loving wife and mother who never let us down. She was a special part of Jaime Lynn’s life as well. She touched so many hearts and souls that a part of her will live on in those of us who knew her and loved her forever.
She is survived by her husband, Reuben Skinner; one son, James Thomas (Jo), Baddeck; one daughter, Cindy Lynn (Donnie), Baddeck; four brothers, Morris (Anne), St. Catharines, Ont., William (Joan), Clifford (Betty) and Clarence (Mary), all of Baddeck; one sister, Marion Warnholtz, Baddeck; half-sister, Aileen Rudderham, Sydney; half-brother, M.J. MacEachern, Boularderie and best friend, Loreen Patterson, Lake Echo; one very special granddaughter, Jaime Lynn, Baddeck.
She was predeceased by brother, D.D. Roberts in infancy.
The body is resting at MacAskill Funeral Home with visitation Wednesday, 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. There will be an Eastern Star service Wednesday, 7 p.m. in the funeral home. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 16, 2000, at Greenwood United Church with the Rev. David Lutes officiating.

Marjorie E. Smith
79, North Sydney
Marjorie E. Smith, 79, of the Northside Community Guest Home and a former resident of 26 Center St., North Sydney, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2000, at the Guest Home.
Born in North Sydney, she was a daughter of the late James and Harriet (Hurley) Anthony.
Marjorie was a longtime switchboard operator at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney, retiring in 1980. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by one brother, Adrian, Ontario; three sisters, Regis Murphy, Annapolis, Md., Rita Miller, Shalimar, Fla., and Joan Anthony, Winnipeg. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Marcie Anthony, North Sydney and by a very kind and special friend, Peggy MacDonald.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sidney, brothers, Bernie and Jimmy, sisters, Marie, Nora and infant sister, Theresa.
Funeral mass was held Monday at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Church with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.
