Margaret Catherine (Kavanaugh) McCarthy
93, Fredericton/New Waterford
Margaret Catherine McCarthy, 93, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, in the York Manor Nursing Home, Fredericton, N.B.
Born in Port Morien, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Christina (Sutherland) Kavanaugh.
Mrs. McCarthy was a former resident of New Waterford and was a member of Mount Carmel Church.
Surviving are three sons, Basil (Maria), Martin (Rose), both of New Waterford, N.S., Leo (Diane), Edmonton, Atla.; five daughters, Marcella Droese, Kitchener, Ont., Noel Walzuk, Mississauga, Ont., Helen Hery (Hector), Edmonton, Alta., Marie McCarthy, Haneytown, N.B. and Eileen Smith (Wilbert), Scotchtown, N.S.; two daughters-in-law, Zina McCarthy and Pat McCarthy, both of Oromocto, N.B.; 37 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert J. McCarthy, daughter, Georgina and five sons, Eddy, Byron, Robert G., Edward and Michael.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, today (Friday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral, Saturday 2 p.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Oromocto Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago St., Oromocto, N.B. and V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, New Waterford.
David James Peters
44, Westmount
David James Peters, 44, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 16, 2000, surrounded by his loving family and friends after a short but courageous battle with Melanoma (Cancer).
Born in Dartmouth, he was the son of the late Charles and Eleanor Peters of St. Peter’s.
Dave was a bricklayer by trade and a member of the Bricklayers Union Local No. 2. He attended Riverview Rural High School and later attended Cape Breton Regional Vocational School. Dave was a member of Holy Rosary Parish and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126, Westmount. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and for many years he was very active in many dart leagues.
Dave was a real family man who always put his family first. He was a devoted and caring brother and a generous gentle person who’s giving personality made him many friends during his life.
He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Trudy (Keough). Dave’s pride and joy, his children, son, Shaun and daughter, Megan; two brothers, Kenny (Brenda), Sydney, Dougie (Debbie), Westmount. Dave and Trudy lived their entire married life with the Keough family (Peggy and the late Rusty) and Dave felt as though Trudy’s sisters, Shannon, Kelly, Lori, Cheryl and Seana and brothers, Gary and Robert were like his own. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for the late Mr. Peters will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel Saturday, March 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Sunday, March 19 at 2 p.m. at Holy Rosary Church, Westmount with Fr. Dan MacInnis and Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating.
The family would greatly prefer in lieu of flowers, that memorial donations be made to the Canadian Melanoma Foundation, 835 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, B.C. Vancouver, B.C., V5Z 4E8 or Palliative Care, Sydney Branch.
Norman Joseph Warner
77, Port Hawkesbury
Norman Joseph Warner passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of the late Thomas H. and Anne (Steele) Warner.
He was a carpenter retiring after 25 years of service with Stora Enso, Point Tupper. He was a former member of Communications Energy and Paper Workers Union of Canada, Local 972. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Port Hawkesbury, Knights of Columbus, Nova Council No. 7924 and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury. He was a noted step-dancer, piper and fiddler of Scottish tradition in the local area. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving in both the Navy and the Army.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Georgina Kelly; daughters, Paula (Alex) Warner, Long Point, Marsha (Gary) Morine, Lower Sackville; sons, Norman Jr. (Genevieve), River Bourgeois, Ronald (Catherine), Port Hawkesbury, Donald, Port Hawkesbury; a sister, Margaret Ryan, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home; a brother, Bob (Stella), Port Hawkesbury. He loved his nine grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Kelly, Melody, Chris, Molly, Ron, Chantelle, Patricia, Aiden and Michael, great-grandchildren, Mikayle and Sachelle.
Predeceased by brothers, George, Thomas, Ed and Pat.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Saturday in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society.
John Nelson (Johnny Butch) MacDonald
94, Coldbrook
John Nelson (Johnny Butch) MacDonald, 94, of Coldbrook, formerly of 95 Richardson Ave., Sydney, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2000, at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville.
Born in 1905 in North Sydney, he was the son of the late William (Billy the Butcher) and Minnie (Rowe) MacDonald.
Johnny Butch began employment at an early age for his father as a drover and a butcher. He then drove a horse and wagon for the Industrial Cooperative store. In 1925, he moved to Gary, Ind., where he worked in the steel mill for two years, saving his money so that he could return to his Cape Breton home. Upon his return, he resumed working with his father at the family business, that was later known as Jack MacDonald Meats Ltd., Esplanade, Sydney. He considered himself very fortunate to have worked at a job that he truly enjoyed – it enabled him to visit his many friends throughout Cape Breton and to make regular trips in his cattle truck to the Truro farm auction. Johnny Butch was very proud to have been honoured by the Cape Breton Federation of Agriculture for his contribution to the farming industry. He also took great pride in having been featured in Cape Breton’s Magazine in an article entitled “Travel with Johnny Butch MacDonald.” He continued to work until failing health forced him to retire at the age of 87. He was a Life and Charter member of the Sydney BFO Elks Lodge No. 270.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Ethel, Cassie, and Freda and by a brother, Claude.
Johnny Butch is survived by his wife, Anne (Deleskie), Coldbrook; son, Jackie, Halifax; daughter, Claudine and son-in-law, David Hatcher, Coldbrook, with whom he resided, and daughter, Marie, Australia; sisters, Gladys McCabe, Pictou and Barbara MacSween, Sydney; and brother, Ralph MacDonald, Sydney. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Deidre, Scotland, Sean, British Columbia, Daire, Australia, Brendan, Australia, and David John Alexander Hatcher and Jillian Anne Hatcher, both of Coldbrook.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 19, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Service will be held Monday, March 20, at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Bob Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Angus (Chink MacLean) MacIsaac
81, New Waterford
Angus Anthony (Chink MacLean) MacIsaac, 81, of 3474 St. Agnes Ave., New Waterford, passed away peacefully at home, Thursday, March 16, 2000, and is gone to be with the Lord.
Born in New Waterford, he was the only child of the late Angus and Mary (MacLean) MacIsaac, formerly of Newfoundland/New Waterford.
Angus was a retired coal miner for over 35 years working in both No. 16 and No. 12 collieries. He was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a quiet person, who was devoted to his family. He had a wonderful sense of humour and loved to laugh. He was an avid lover of animals and gave special attention to the neighbourhood pets.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Irma (Mercer) MacIsaac, formerly of Sydney; four sons, Barry (Georgina), Petrolia, Ont.; Bobby (Heather), Victoria, B.C., grandchildren, Christine, Robin, great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Faye; son, Ronnie, Victoria, B.C.; John (Paula), New Waterford, grandchildren, Melissa, Ian, Matthew and Rebecca; six daughters, Beverly (John) Field, Elsa Craig, Ont., grandchildren, Janice, Jennifer, Jacqueline, great-grandchild, Jessica; daughter, Sharon (Bree) Cadden, New Waterford, grandchildren, Lois, Dale, Jennifer, great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Kalvin and Keir; daughter, Ella Lamarche, grandchildren, Rachelle and Mark, all of New Waterford; Marlene, Strathroy, Ont.; Sandra (Jim) Ferguson, New Waterford, grandchildren, Tara, Brittany, Victoria; daughter, Linda, London, Ont. Also survived by his aunt, Mildred MacLean, New Waterford.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Cynthia Lee, uncles, John, Frank and Buddy MacLean.
Visitation for the late Mr. MacIsaac will be in the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Remains will be transferred to Calvin United Church, Wednesday at 12 noon where funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. the Rev. Duncan Roach officiating.

Allister Bede MacKinnon
71, Inverness
Allister Bede MacKinnon, 71, of Inverness, formerly of New Waterford, died Friday, March 17, 2000, at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness.
Born at Inverness, he was the son of the late Angus and Mable (MacQuarrie) MacKinnon.
He was a member of St. Matthew’s United Church, Inverness, Ceilidh Trail C.B. Club, Clan MacKinnon and Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, the former Tena Morrison; one daughter, Heather MacKinnon, Sydney and one son, Byron (Bernice), Inverness; three sisters, Jess MacKinnon and Marie MacKinnon, both of New Victoria, Germain Bisson, New Waterford; four brothers, John R. (Laura), New Waterford, Harold (Betty Lou), Vancouver, Alexander (Isabel) and Hector (Rose), both of New Victoria; two grandchildren, Jawna and Randon MacKinnon.
The late Mr. MacKinnon will be cremated. Memorial service will be held at St. Matthew’s United Church, Inverness at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, 2000 with Rev. Elaine Hall and Rev. Don Willmer officiating.
Donations may be made to Palliative Care Unit or the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital.
