Margaret Catherine (Kavanaugh) McCarthy

Margaret Catherine McCarthy, 93, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, in the York Manor Nursing Home, Fredericton, N.B.
Surviving are son, Basil (Marie), New Waterford; daughter, Noel Walzak, Mississauga, Ont. and also daughter-in-law, Ethel McCarthy, Whitby, Ont.
Wilfred James (Bob) Oakley
76, Sydney
Wilfred James (Bob) Oakley, 76, of 1403 George St., Sydney, passed away peacefully, Thursday, March 16, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of late James and Jemima (Howard) Oakley.
Wilfred was a member of St. John’s Anglican Church, Mira Road. “Bob” was a well known and highly respected masonry contractor who continued the traditional family trade until the age of 65.
Wilfred was an avid outdoorsman, who greatly enjoyed such activities as fishing and hunting, a passion which he instilled in his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Dicks; daughter-in-law, Anna Oakley; five grandsons, Jimmy, Randy, Jody, Troy and Chad and by nine great-grandchildren. Wilfred will also be sadly missed by his three sisters, Clara, Ellen and Laurel and five brothers, Walter, Carl, Howard, Gerald and Murray, all of Sydney.
He was predeceased by his only dear son, Jimmy in 1991.
The late Mr. Oakley will have visitation, today (Saturday) from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, main level. Funeral service will be held Monday, March 20, 2000 at 2:30 p.m. at St. George’s Church, Charlotte St., Sydney with the Rev. Lori Ramsey officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation or the N.S. Lung Association.
George William Groves
89, Glace Bay
George William Groves, 88, of 107 Lake Road, Glace Bay, died Sunday, March 19, 2000, in the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, South Street
Born in Petites, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah (Collins) Groves Talbot. He came to Glace Bay at the age of 13 and resided in the Hub for several years. He worked as a coal miner in No. 2 and 20 collieries for 36 years. He was an avid sports fisherman and enjoyed many years at Lake Ainslie. Mr. Groves was an adherent of Warden United Church, Glace Bay.
Mr. Groves is survived by his wife Jessie (MacDonald) Sullivan Groves who was formerly of Port Morien, step-daughter, Linda (Sheldon) McEwan, Glace Bay, and his beloved grandchildren, Aaron, Fort St. John, B.C., and Jennifer, Halifax, N.S., sisters, Susie Morgan, Lil Talbot, both of Glace Bay. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law Alice MacDonald Groves, Ontario.
He was predeceased by brother, Eli Groves, sister, Lucy Parson and infant brother John.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday, March 21, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel. Funeral will be held Wednesday, March 22, at 2 p.m. in Warden United Church, Glace Bay, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will be at Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien.
Catherine Olga MacRae
80, Dartmouth
Catherine Olga MacRae, 80, of Dartmouth died March 18, 2000, in the New Infirmary Site, QEII.
Born in Groves Point, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Johanna (Beaton) Bain. She belonged to both the Rebekah Garnet Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star, Honorable Joseph Howe Chapter No. 20 for many years. Survived by her husband John, three sons, William, wife Wendy of Port Hawkesbury, John Kenzie, wife Barbara of Dartmouth, Jimmy of Dartmouth, two grandsons, Todd and John, two great-granddaughters, Emma and Katie. Predeceased by two brothers, James R. and Edwin C. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Monday, March 20. Order of the Eastern Star Service 6:45 p.m. and Funeral Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, all from A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, with Rev. Stephen Fram officiating. Burial in Big Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, at a later date.

Howard McLean
70, Sydney
Howard McLean, 70, of Breton Bay Nursing Home, formerly of Gray St., Sydney, died peacefully at Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Howard Sr. and Alice (Slater) McLean, Sydney.
He is survived by his devoted wife, the former Adelene “Tootsie” MacPherson, loving daughter, Patricia, son-in-law, Allan Mombourquette, Lower L’Ardoise, proud papa to his granddaughters, Laura and Rachel Wiwer and their Dad, Harry Wiwer, Sydney. Also surviving are his sister Marilyn, brother-in-law John Brown, Edmonton, niece, Ainsley, nephews, Ian and Kyle, his aunt, Isabel Slater and Uncle Alex Zerebecki, London, Ontario.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A memorial service and burial will take place at a later date.
Helen (Farrow) Nicholson
57, New Waterford
Helen Violet (Farrow) Nicholson, 57, of 694 St. Joseph St., New Waterford, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 18, 2000, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Tommy and Violet (Mahon) Farrow. Helen was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. She was loved by all who knew her because of her generosity, kindness and giving ways. Helen loved life and was an exceptional wife, mother and friend.
She will be sadly missed by her husband, Tony Nicholson, son, Floyd and companion Susan Alders, daughter, Ruth Ann (Wayne) LeBlanc and especially by her two granddaughters, Kelsey and Larissa who she adored. Helen will be missed by her sister Donna MacMaster, niece Jo-ann, New Waterford, brother, Russell (Thelma) Farrow, Glace Bay, nephews, Russell Jr., Edmonton, Glen and Darren, Glace Bay and numerous friends and relatives.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday from Mount Carmel Church, New Waterford, with Father Donald McGillivray officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Avenue, New Waterford.
Donations may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.
William Stanley “Bill” White
Sydney
Bill White of 20 Spring St., Sydney, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Samuel and Margaret (Groah) White. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Sydney. He was employed with the Canadian National Express, retiring in 1986. Prior to that he worked for Ideal Ice Cream Company. He was a member of the C.N. Pensioners Association.
Surviving are his wife, the former Myrna Murphy; two daughters Elaine (Fred) Walker, Bedford, and Barbara (John) Comeau, Yarmouth; three sisters Rita (Walter) Ostrowlski, Toronto, Anna Boudreau, Thorold, Ont., Evangeline (Donald) Miles, Tweed, Ont.; two brothers, George (Greta) White, Bras d’Or, and Gregory (Mary) White, Thorold, Ont; two grandchildren, Heidi and Jonathon. Also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his first wife Helen Murphy; brothers John and Chester; sisters Helen and Mary.
The late Mr. White will have no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Memorial mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. D. Murphy officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the service between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Reception at the church to follow.
Donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Building Fund or charity of choice.
