Alfred Herman Richard
80, River Bougerois
Alfred Herman Richard, 80, River Bourgeois, passed away March 26, 2000, in the Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in South River Bourgeois, he was a son of the late Charles and Vina (Landry) Richard. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, River Bourgeois. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the Merchant Marines which took him to all corners of the globe. He sailed the Great Lakes. He was employed by Patterson Steamships Ltd. prior to working for Stora Forest Industries, Point Tupper. He was a victim of the 1982 mill explosion which left him totally disabled. He spent his retirement years carving decorative ducks. During his courageous battle over the last 18 years he kept his sense of humor.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret Digout; daughters, Veronica (Gary) Teed, Halifax, Claire (Pat) Lovett, Halifax, Elaine Burke, St. Peter’s, Louise (Norman) LeBlanc, St. Peter’s, Maxine (David) Fraser, St. Peter’s, sisters, Geraldine (Tommy) Amero, Plympton, Digby Co., Rita Landry, River Bourgeois, Monica (Joe) Stone, River Bourgeois, brothers, Clarence (Marie), Halifax, Martin (Margaret), Peterborough, Ont., Leo (Joan), Oshawa, Ont., Egbert (Sally), Toronto, Ont., Tony (Ethel), Toronto, Ont., John (Ann), St. Peter’s, Fabian (Casilda), River Bourgeois. His pride and joy-were his grandchildren, Claudine, Lisette, Derek, Cory, Stephanie, Alicia, Vanessa, Adrian, Ainsley, Joella, Katrina, Erica; great-grandchildren, Josée, Cameron.
He was predeceased by grandson, Dale LeBlanc.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. today, 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in River Bourgeois Community Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday from St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Sandy MacNeil officiating. Members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 47, St. Peter’s, are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to attend the funeral of their late comrade Alfred Richard. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the KLM Fund, Strait Richmond Hospital or The Lung Association.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, St. Peter’s.

George S. Richards
83, North Sydney
George S. Richards, 83, a lifelong resident of North Sydney, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney, he was a son of the late George and Mae (Ronayne) Richards.
George was in the printing business for most of his life working with Herald Print and Northside Printers in North Sydney, and as a Linotype operator with the Cape Breton Post. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, and a former 3rd degree member of the Fr. William Kiely Council of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a former Associate Member of Branch #19 Royal Canadian Legion. George enjoyed spending time at his cottage in Kempt Head, and in his earlier years loved to fish.
He is survived by two daughters, Theresa (Rod) Jesty, North Sydney, and Georgina (Ted) Phillips, Glen Haven, Halifax Co., brother, Huey, North Sydney, five grandsons, Matthew, Wayne, Chris, Angus and George. He is also survived by his companion Alfreda Clarke of North Sydney.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Mary Clarke, two sisters, Hughena Barrett and Jen Lamie.
Visitation was held Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney. Funeral Mass will take place Monday at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph Church with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association or any charity.

William Snow
76, Glace Bay
William Snow, 76, of 73 Dominion Street, Glace Bay, formerly from Birch Grove, died at the family residence surrounded by family and friends on Sunday, Mar. 26, 2000.
Born in Birch Grove he was the son of the late John C. and Mary L. (Butts) Snow. He was an adherent of Victoria Presbyterian Church, Birch Grove. He was an employee of Devco for forty years, retiring in 1979.
He is survived by his wife Isabel (MacDonald) Snow and a daughter Judy (Bill) Griffin, Port Hawkesbury, sisters, Sadie, Birch Grove, Emily Lynk, Glace Bay, Louise Carson Leah (Roy) Ferguson, Flora (Pius) Antonello, all of Sydney, brothers Andy and Chesley, his wife (Masie), Birch Grove, and Robert, Ontario. Also surviving are grandchildren, Freddie (Melissa), Ralston, Alta., Debbie, Calgary, Alta., Billie (Megan), Sussex, N.B., Crystol of Port Hawkesbury.
Predeceased by a daughter Faye Rohrback, sister Mabel Kibyuk, and a brother in infancy.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 7-9 and Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery.
Donations may be made to Palliative Care, Victorian Order of Nurses or a charity of choice.

John W. (Jack) Thomas
70, North Sydney
John W. (Jack) Thomas, 70, a resident of Peppett St., North Sydney passed away Sunday, March, 26, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Port Aux Basques, Nfld., he was a son of the late William and Annie (Meade) Thomas.
Jack was employed as a stevedore with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney for many years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by two brothers, George, Boularderie, and Peter (Yvette), North Sydney, sister, Gladys Forward, North Sydney, nephews, George, Troy, Earl and Lloyd and nieces, Patricia and Georgia. He is also survived by several other family members.
He was predeceased by a nephew Rollie Forward.
Jack will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held Wednesday 2 p.m. from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial in Lakeside Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the N S. Lung Association.

John Brennick
77, Bras d'Or
John Brennick, 77, a life long resident of Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, died Monday, March 27, 2000, in the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Bras d’Or, he was the son of the late Mickey and Ellen (Cantwell) Brennick.
He was employed for 41 years at Alex MacNeil and Sons General Store. For the past 15 years he operated the Arm of Gold Campground and Trailer Park. He was a member and supporter of the local fish and game association and a former member of the local school board.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann; five daughters, Jean, Calgary, Judy (Bodhan) Wasilenski, Saudi Arabia, Joan (Kerry) Muir, Florida, Michelle (Pierre) Landry, Calgary and Mary Frances, at home; one son, John (Flora), Bras d’Or; eight grandchildren, Jennifer and Pierre Landry, Heather and Scott Muir, Alexandria and Nicholas Wasilenski, Juliana and Matthew Brennick; three sisters, Blanche Hunt, Manitoba, Helen Devison, Louisbourg and Add MacDonald, Sydney Mines.
He was predeceased by one brother, Bernie.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held Friday 2 p.m. from St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with the Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Family flowers only, memorial donations may be made to the C.B. Downe Syndrome Society or to the Palliative Care Unit, c/o the Northside Hospital Foundation.

A. Bernice Cudworth
71, Bedford
A. Bernice Cudworth, 71, of Bedford, formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully at home with her family.
Born in Donkin, C.B., she was the daughter of the late John T. and Alice Milley.
She was an active member of the First United Church, Breton Bay Ladies Auxiliary and the Sydney Heart Beats.
Surviving is her devoted husband of 43 years, Harold.
She will be sadly missed by daughters, Margie (Ray) Davies, Judy (Sandy) Hines; brothers, Bernie, Elroy; sisters, Leah Goodwin, Hazel Johnson; grandchildren, Keith, Paul, Lynn Davies, Megan Hines and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Chesley, John, Alex, sisters, Sadie, Effie and Ethel.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Halifax Regional Crematorium. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. in the First United Church. Reception immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Church, Sydney or a charity of choice.
