John Walter Kane
78, Glace Bay
John Walter Kane, 78, of Glace Bay, formerly of Reserve Mines, passed away Saturday, Mar. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late John and Bridget (Fennel) Kane. John was a supervisor of the maintenance department with Victoria Park upon his retirement in 1977. John was a member of the Cape Breton Highlanders. He was a member of John Bernard Croak Br. #3 Royal Canadian Legion, Glace Bay, and was also a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines. John was a decorated Second World War veteran and was wounded in combat when serving in Italy.
John is survived by daughters, Betty Johnson, Glace Bay, Corren (Gord) Tapp, Oshawa, Ont., sons, John Jr. “Glorice”, Bowmanville, Ont., and Barry, Calgary, Alberta, brother, Sam, Glace Bay, and sister, Gertrude Jessome, Glace Bay. Also surviving are grandchildren Lisa (Tom) Pennington, Ont., Scott and Jason Giovannetti, Brampton, Ont., special nephew Al and wife Theresa Gallant.
John is predeceased by his wife Mary Evelyn (Finnel) Kane.
Visitation for the late Mr. Kane will be today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be Tuesday, Mar. 28, at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Donation’s may be made to the Canadian Kidney Foundation.

Angus Samuel Johnson
67, Glace Bay
Angus Samel Johnson, 67, of 159 South Street, Glace Bay, died suddenly at home on Friday, Mar. 24, 2000.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of Margaret (Peggy) Johnson and the late Murdock Johnson. Angus was retired, having worked for the Dominion Coal Company then Dupont Canada in Kingston, Ont., and Atomic Energy Canada, Heavy Water Plant, Glace Bay. Angus was an active participant in church organizations and served in several capacities at Newsom United Church. At the time of his death he was a church Elder. He was past master, Maple Leaf Lodge No. 88, New Waterford, and also a member of the Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection, the Isle Royal Chapter of Rose Croix and the Nova Scotia Sovereign Consistory 32 degrees.
He is survived by his wife Mary (MacAulay), son, Laren, sisters, Margaret Archibald, Halifax, Joan Marchand, Sydney, and Kay (Dick) Rudback, Halifax, and several nieces and nephews. Angus will be long remembered by his family and friends for his compassion, good nature, kind heart, sense of humor and worth ethic.
Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at Newsom United Church, Glace Bay, on Wednesday, Mar. 29, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens following the church service.
There will be a Masonic Service on Monday evening at 7 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home.

Alice Mae MacDonald
86, Sydney
Alice Mae MacDonald, 81, of Ironville, passed away very peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, Mar. 25, 2000, at the Cape Breton Health Care Complex, Sydney.
Born at Sydney, she was the daughter of the late George and Lavina (Frost) Ferguson.
She was an active member of Saint Andrew’s Parish, Boisdale, and a long-time member of the parish choir. Alice was also a very active member in the community of Boisdale.
She is survived by four daughters, Elaine (Mrs. Kevin MacLellan), Westmount, Pat (Mrs. David Garey), Saint John, N.B., Brenda, Halifax, and Karen, Saint John, N.B., five sons, Colin (Velma), Cambridge, Ont., David (Marilyn), St. Catharines, Ont., Ron (Carole), Fort McMurray, Alta., Kevin, Edmonton, Alta., and Kelly (Kelli), Ironville, three sisters, Elsie (Carl Levy), Sydney, Adelaide Nesterenko, Sydney, and Georgie Hill, Point Edward, one brother Donnie Ferguson, Burnaby, B.C. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband Colin, six brothers, David, Philip, Harold, Fraser, Charlie and Roland, one grandson, Leonard Colin in infancy.
The late Mrs. MacDonald had visitation Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday in St. Andrew’s Church with Father Donnie Angus MacDonald and Father J.A. MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice.

Bernice (Beat's) MacDougall
62, Glace Bay
Bernice (Beat’s) MacDougall, 62, of Glace Bay, passed away Sunday, Mar. 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Bernnie and Jane (Nicholson) MacDougall. Beat’s was one of the first members of Brass Tack’s Industries, Glace Bay. She socialized daily at Tim Horton’s.
Beat’s is survived by brothers, Johnny, Ottawa, Mickey, Glace Bay, sisters, Lucy (Curley) Bosley, Florida, Frances (Nelson) MacEwan, Port Hawkesbury, a brother Gerald, and a special niece Irene with whom she resided with in Glace Bay.
Beat’s will be deeply missed by numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by a brother Eddie, sister, Irene and other siblings in infancy.
Visitation for the late Miss MacDougall will be held today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be Tuesday, Mar. 28, 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. John Graham officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Donations may be made to Brass Tack’s Industries, Glace Bay, or a charity of choice.
Beat’s was a very loving person and now she is God’s care.

Alexander Donald MacLean
98, Middle River
Alexander Donald MacLean, 98, of Middle River, Victoria Co., died Friday, Mar. 24, 2000, in Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck.
Born in West Middle River, he was a son of the late Aulay and Johanna (MacLeod) MacLean. He was employed as a factory worker. He was a member of Middle River United Church. As a young man, he moved to the USA, where his first employment was the driver of an ice truck. After a short stint in the U.S. Army during the Second World War he was employed at W.H. Nichols Company of Waltham until his retirement, at which time he moved back to the family home in Middle River.
He was guest at Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck, for the past seven years. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by twin brother, John A. MacLean; sisters, Christine Morrison, Nora K. Wine, Isabel “Bella” Morrison; nephews, Donald Morrison, Russell Bonner; grandniece, Colleen Fee.
Funeral at 2 p.m. today in Farquharson Presbyterian Church, Middle River, with Rev. David Lutes officiating. Burial in Middle River Cemetery.
Family flowers only, donations to Alderwood Rest Home or charity of choice.

Gertrude Teresa Morrison
74, Reserve Mines
Gertrude Teresa (Gillis) Morrison, 74, of 2144 Sydney Road, Reserve Mines, died Sunday, Mar. 26, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (MacKinnon) Gillis.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Reserve Mines.
Gertrude is survived by her husband of 51 years, Angus Morrison, three daughters, Rosemary (Bill) Slattery, Halifax, Michele (Dannie) Steele, Dartmouth, and Joan Marie (Glenn) Lewis, Reserve Mines. She was the cherished grandmother of Brenna and Eamonn Slattery, Adam and Sara Steele, Maura and Natalie Lewis. She will be sadly missed and remembered always. She is also survived by sisters, Mrs. Mary MacAskill, Florence (Michael) Nearing and Elizabeth Barrett, sister-in-law, Mary (Christopher) MacLennan and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she is predeceased by brothers, Rannie, Tom, Francis and Robert Gillis, sister, Anne Mae Gillard.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Donations are welcomed to St. Joseph’s Cemetery Fund, St. Vincent de Paul or a charity of choice.
