Maude Blanche Paquet, 68, of 16 Burke St., Sydney Mines, passed away at home, Friday, March 24, 2000, surrounded by her family.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late David and Sylvia (Cox) Stephenson.
She was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines.
Maude is survived by John (Jack), her loving husband of 49 years and her 13 children, Paula (Blaine) Jessome, Debbie Paquet (Billy), Ann (Brian) Cantwell, Elaine (Stewart) Brown, Linda (Danny) Tobin, Jan (Sheldon) Vickers, with whom she resided, Jean (Raymond) Pye, all of Sydney Mines, Nancy (Dave) Doyle, Burlington, Ont., Nicole (Danny) Finlayson, Guelph Ont., Johnnie (Debbie), Sandy (Sharonann), Wayne (Lois) and Kenneth (Heather), all of Sydney Mines. Nannie was a special grandmother to 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are her sister, Jean (John) Saskalaskus, Rexdale, Ont. and her brothers, David Stephenson, Ontario and Clarence Stephenson, Campbellton N.B.
Mom was a very special, caring and loving woman, who was dedicated to her family.
Visitation today (Saturday) 7-9 p.m. and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
The funeral will take place Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church with the Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Raymond (Hummey) Young
Raymond (Hummey) Young, 65, of St. Catharines, Ont., passed away suddenly in Thunder Bay, Wednesday, March 22, 2000.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late John and Esther (Dalton) Young.
He was a member of the Seafarers International Union and sailed on the Great Lakes for 35 years.
He is survived by his son, Doug (Lisa) and grandson, John J. and his daughter, Laura. Also surviving are his sisters, Bernie Allan, Scarborough, Loretta Johnston, Sydney Mines, Doris Bragg, Millie Tobin and Jeanette Boutilier, all of North Sydney and his brother, John, North Sydney.
Visitation Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Tuesday 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines with Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Alphonse Bishop
66, Sydney
Alphonse Bishop, 66, of 144 Laurier Street, Whitney Pier, passed away Friday, March 24, 2000, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late Joseph and Claris (Jones) Bishop. Alphonse was employed with the City of Sydney Works Dept.
He is survived by common law wife, Lorretta (May King) Cambridge, step-daughter, Darlene, Sydney, two step-sons, Karl (Cleo), Sydney and Jerome, B.C., two brothers, Harold, Winnipeg and Joseph, Whitney Pier, a sister; Evelyn Bishop, Montreal. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great-grand children, nieces and nephews.
Alphonse was predeceased by two sons, Alphonse Jr., and Allan, two sisters, Freda and Vivian, a brother, Orlando.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held Tuesday 2 p.m. at St. Philip Anglican Orthodox Church with Arch Bishop Vincent Waterman officiating. Arrangements under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation.
He will be missed by all who knew him.

67, Florence
D. Keith Cantwell, 67, of 14 MacKay Street, Florence, passed away at home Sunday, Mar. 26, 2000.
Born in Bras d’Or, he was the son of the late Frank and Theresa (McGrath) Cantwell. Keith had been employed with Marine Atlantic until his retirement in 1995. He was a long time member of St. Stephen’s Parish, Florence.
He is survived by his loving wife, Theresa (Dawe), his daughters, Donna (Byron) and Joanne (Hugh), his sons, Daniel (Linda) and Percy (Gloria) and his grandchildren, Raylene, Nicole, Keith, Miranda and Craig. Also his sisters, Ida, Ilene, Greta, Geraldine, Pat, Phylis and Shirley and his brothers, Murray and Edgar.
He was predeceased by his infant son Frankie, his sister, Frances, and his brothers Earl, Russell, Percy, Warren and Don, his brother James and his sister Marguerite, both in infancy.
Visitation today (Monday) 2-4, 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at St. Stephen’s Church, Florence, Rev. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial in St. Stephen’s Cemetery.
Elias (Lizzie) Deveaux
66, New Waterford
Elias (Lizie) Deveaux, 66, of 337 8th St., New Waterford, passed away Friday, March 24, 2000, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Nelson and Gertrude (Perfect) Deveaux.
He was a member of all Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford. Lizie was employed as a miner for many years, working in No. 16, 18 and 12 collieries and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by his wife, the former Muriel (Hill) Deveaux; two daughters, Anna (Mrs. Charles MacKinnon) and Jennifer, both of Sydney, son, Stephen, Montreal; four sisters, Catherine (Mrs. Stewart Hill), Point Edward, Martha (Mrs. Ray Penney), New Waterford, Sadie Campbell, New Waterford and Mary Delaney, Kitchener, Ont.; a brother, Joseph Deveaux, New Waterford.
Poppa will be greatly missed by special grandson, Spencer John MacKinnon.
Besides his parents, Lizie is predeceased by two sisters, Josephine and Marie.
There will be no visitation by request.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 29, at 2 p.m. from All Saints Church, New Waterford, with Rev. Douglas Chard officiating. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Point Edward.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
Donations may be made to the Lung Association.

Joseph James Hanlon
75, Port Hawkesbury
Joseph James Hanlon, 75, of Port Hawkesbury, died Saturday, Mar. 25, 2000, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Saint John, N.B., he was a son of the late James and Lillian (George) Hanlon. He was employed at Irving Pulp and Paper Mill, Saint John, N.B., before moving to Port Hawkesbury in 1961. He worked for Nova Scotia Pulp Ltd. (Stora Enso) for 27 years retiring as a supervisor of the newsprint mill. He was very active in the Port Hawkesbury Lions Club and the Port Hawkesbury Figure Skating Club, having served as president for both. He enjoyed golfing and curling and will be sadly missed by his bowling team on Tuesday’s, his Dooley pool buddies on Thursday’s and the guys at the Union Hall. He was a generous and loving husband; a gentle and giving father who will be greatly missed but will live forever in our hearts. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Port Hawkesbury. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Carlton York Regiment and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Port Hawkesbury.
He is survived by his wife, the former Audrey McDonald; daughter, Kathy (Ken) Morine, Grantville; son, Bob (Connie), Ottawa, Ont.; sisters, Sister Veronica (Sisters of Charity), Saint John, N.B., Mary (Art) Bordage, Saint John, N.B., Helen (Jim) Boyle, Bathurst, N.B.; brother, Fred, Saint John, N.B.; grandchildren, Richard, Lauren, Kelly and Tracy. He was predeceased by sister, Lillian in infancy and a brother John.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today. Legion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today. Vigil service at 8:30 p.m., all in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass to be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Cremation to follow with private burial at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Parish.
