William Young MacDonald
55, Port Hawkesbury/Irish Cove
William Young MacDonald, 55, of Port Hawkesbury and Irish Vale, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford, N.S., he was the son of the late John F. (Philip) and Anne Jane (Cash) MacDonald, Irish Vale.
He was a graduate of Johnstown Academy, Xavier Junior College and St. Francis Xavier University. He was a teacher for 32 years in the Port Hawkesbury school system, having served 20 of those as principal of Centennial Elementary. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Port Hawkesbury, where he volunteered much of his time as Eucharistic minister, lector, religious education teacher and a member of the parish council.
Bill was strong in his belief of the co-operative movement, having served on the board of directors of the Strait Co-op and Strait Area Credit Union for many years. He was a member of the N.S. Teacher’s Union in which he was extremely active having served in all executive positions in the Inverness South District as well as serving on various committees on the provincial level.
Bill received great pleasure in serving on the board of directors of the Cape Breton Children’s Aid Society where he was the chairman of the first Cash Crusade for Kids and subsequently served in all executive positions on the newly formed Children’s Aid Society of Inverness-Richmond.
Bill was able to spend many summers at his Irish Vale home and never missed an opportunity to invite one and all for a “wee” cup of tea.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, the former Judy Morrison; children, Scott, Jeff and Shannon; sister, Sr. Mary E. MacDonald, CND, Toronto and mother-in-law, Nancy Morrison, Port Hawkesbury Nursing Home.
Visitation will be 7-9 this evening (Tuesday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, from where vigil service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A celebration of Bill’s life will take place at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Burial of the cremated remains at a future time in Johnstown Cemetery.

Louis P. Marshall
Eskasoni
Louis Peter Marshall, 71, of 25-A Shore Road, Eskasoni, passed away Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born at North Sydney, he was the son of the late Peter and Magdalene (Bernard) Marshall.
He was a member of Holy Family Parish, Eskasoni. In his earlier years Louis worked in the local fishery. He also did work for most of his life as a carpenter.
Surviving are his wife, the former Susie Denny; five daughters, Mary Catherine, Mary Ann, Anna T., Charmaine, and special daughter, Margaret Simon, all of Eskasoni; nine sons, Joe, Shubenacadie, Peter (Kim), George (Malklit), Fred (Kim), Charlie (Alexina), Pat (Sonia), Henry (Sandra), Mike (Judy), all of Eskasoni, Peter Tom (Nancy), Chapel Island; one sister, Annie M. Darvelle, Halifax; one brother, Frank, Boston; 32 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight godchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Bridget Paul, Ellen Paul, Mary Pierro and a sister, Mary Ann in infancy, six brothers, Charlie, Joe P., John P., Stephen P., William P. and by an infant brother, Louis.
The late Mr. Marshall will have visitation Thursday, March 30, 2000 in the family residence after 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Church with the Rev. Robert MacNeil officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery, Eskasoni, under the direction of T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel.
Gertrude Teresa Morrison
74, Reserve Mines
A memorial Mass of Resurrection for the late Gertrude Teresa (Gillis) Morrison of Reserve Mines will be celebrated in St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines, Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Rev. Ray Huntley officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
Funeral services under the direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay.
Earl Marshall Wilson
83, Sydney
Earl Marshall Wilson, 83, Furnace Street, Sydney, passed away Sunday, March 26, 2000, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, Earl was a son of the late Isaac and Mary (Crane) Wilson.
During the Second World War, Earl served with the Cape Breton Highlanders in Italy and Continental Europe. In 1976, he retired from the Railway Department of Sydney Steel. He was a life long member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 128.
Earl is survived by his wife, Violet; daughters, Donna Delvecchio, Sydney and Carol (James) McKay, Stettler, Alta.; sons, Raymond (Judy), Calgary and Gary (Karen), Sydney; sisters, Gladys (Walter) Bunn and Ethel (Jack) Hillier, both of Sydney; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by brothers, Harry, Kenneth and Owen.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel Thursday, 2 p.m. with the Rev. Willis Henderson officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Raymond John (Jack) Woods
81, New Waterford
Raymond John (Jack) Woods, 81, of 3451 Wood Ave., New Waterford, died Monday, March 27, 2000, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Moncton, N.B., he was the son of the late Francis and Sarah (Flannigan) Woods.
He was a member of Calvin United Church and a retired coal miner, having worked in No. 12 Colliery. He served overseas during the Second World War with the York Carlton Regiment. He was a member of the Army, Navy, Airforce, Unit 217, New Waterford and the New Waterford Pensioners Club. Mr. Woods was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a C.B. radio operator.
Surviving are two sons, William (Elizabeth), Don Mills, Ont., Albert (Lorraine), River Ryan; four daughters, Sharon (Wilfred) Hines, Don Mills, Ont., Norma (Sheldon) MacDonald, Dominion, Evelyn McLeod and Lorraine Woods, both of New Waterford; a brother, Leslie, Richibucto, N.B.; sister, Jean Lounsbury, Seabrook, N.H., U.S.A.; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Laura Moore.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, the former Evelyn (Davis), two sons, Raymond and Leonard, a brother, Albert, four sisters, Beatrice Hudson, Loretta Hudson, Pearl Hache and Ruth Close.
Visitation is in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Homes, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mr. Woods’ remains will be brought to the church Wednesday noon, followed by the funeral at 3 p.m. in Calvin United Church with the Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery.
Annie L. (Payne) Boutilier
86, Glace Bay
Annie L. Boutilier, 86, of Glace Bay, a long time resident of Seaview Manor, passed away quietly and peacefully Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, after a lengthy illness.
Annie was the daughter of the late Bill and Maude Payne.
Remembering Annie as spending many a happy time doing the things she loved to do most, dancing and playing cards with her friends and neighbours, she will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Annie is survived by her sons, Bill (Shirley), Trout Brook Road, Marion Bridge, Roy (Donna), Glace Bay, Benjamin (Sara), Glace Bay; daughters, Marie (Bernie) MacInnis, Sanfield Road, Marion Bridge, Paula (Frank) MacLean, Glace Bay; two brothers, Murray (Gloria), B.C. and Jack (Marie), Glace Bay; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ben, daughter, Jackie, brother, Roy and sisters, Marion Kelloway, Wilena Baxter, Mabel MacNeil and Pearl MacCormick.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 31, 2000 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Canon Fev Arnold officiating. Burial in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
