Anna Catherine MacAulay
89, Glace Bay
Anna Catherine MacAulay, 89, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001.
Born in Long Beach, Port Morien, Anna was a long-time resident of Passchendaele and most recently a resident of the Senior Complex, Sterling Road, Glace Bay.
Anna was the daughter of the late William Robert and Sara (Nicholson) MacGregor.
Anna was a member of Newsom United Church. She was a long-time valued member of the UCW. Anna taught Sunday School, youth group and supervised the church Baby Band for many years.
Anna was a homemaker who took pride in her family. She was a devoted wife, a caring and compassionate mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She touched everyone who knew her. She enjoyed her many friends. Anna has earned her rest. May God bless her.
Dearly loved, she is survived by daughters, Mary Johnson and Roberta Rolf, Glace Bay; sons, Archibald (Erma), Glace Bay, and Stuart (Patricia), Kingston, Ont.; daughter-in-law, Clara Paul MacAulay, Halifax. She was idolized by her seven grandchildren, Cathy (Art) Spencer, Glace Bay, Donald (Pam) MacAulay, Cornwall, P.E.I., Karen (Brian) Gerrard, St. Thomas, Ont., Stuart (Sara) MacAulay, Halifax, Robin MacAulay, Calgary, Alta., Loren Johnson, Halifax, and Katherine Rolf, Glace Bay. Loved by eight great-grandchildren, Brechan, Jehnna, Liam, Colin, Neil, Anna, Carli and Parker.
Anna was predeceased by her husband, Robert ‘Bob’ MacAulay, son, Donald, sisters, Mary Effie, Francis, Willa and brother, Robert.
She was the last surviving member of her family.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb. 15 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held at Newsom United Church, Dominion Street, Glace Bay, Friday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens following the church service.
Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Cancer Society.
Sophie Horechuk
79, Glace Bay
Sophie Horechuk, 79, of 17 George St. and formerly of Wallace Road, and Whitney Pier, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the home of Wally and Ruth MacAulay, with whom she resided with for the past seven years.
Born in Ukraine, Feb. 2, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Dorothy and Harry Horechuk.
Sophie is survived by a daughter, Dorothy (Gerald) McNeil, Boston; son, Wayne (Martina) King, New Glasgow; brother-in-law, Albert Koziel; grandchildren, Dale (Shawn) Rodgers, Natasha and Mason King; great-grandchildren, Bryan, Brittany and Tyler Rodgers; special ‘grandson’ Kirk Danyluk; also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by brothers, Mike and Joe Horechuk, sister, Mary Koziel, grandson, Kenny McNeil.
Visitation will be held Friday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Panahyda will be 7:30 p.m. Friday. Funeral Saturday 10 a.m. in the Curry Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. P. Rudnik officiating. A private burial at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Annabelle (Peters) Vaters
82, Glace Bay
Annabelle (Peters) Vaters, 82, of 2 Baron Dr., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Steven and Elizabeth Peters.
She was a member of Holy Cross Parish, Glace Bay.
Mrs. Vaters is survived by four daughters, Anna (Eric MacLeod), Edmonton, Alta., Jean (Charles Gooler), Stettler, Alta., Linda (Francis Blacquier), Charlottetown, P.E.I., Donelda (Vince McNeil), Glace Bay; sisters, Kay Young, Ontario, Grace Hopkins, Ontario; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Annabelle was predeceased by her husband, John Vaters in 1990, brother, Joe, sisters, Helen Tanner, Bessie MacKenzie and Dorothy Hopkins.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 15, 2001 at Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Fr. John Graham officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

She is also survived by two sons, Joseph, Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., and John, at home.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Friday, Feb. 16, at Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay from 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Fr. John Graham officiating. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Sarah Jane (Sadie) DeDieu
81, Glace Bay
Sarah Jane (Sadie) DeDieu, 81, passed away peacefully Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Complex.
She was born in Ingonish and raised in Table Head by Allan B. and Elizabeth (MacLean) MacDonald.
Sadie was an employee of the Glace Bay Community Hospital for many years and a lifelong member of St. Eugene’s Sodality, Choir and CWL. She was an avid bowler and card player.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil, son, Lorne and granddaughter, Martine in infancy, sisters, Tiny Lynk, Mary Vey, Mary Briggs, brother, Rod MacDonald and stepbrother, Mike MacDougall.
She is survived by daughters, Lana (Gordon) Bettof, Doreen LePage, both of Dominion; sons, Sheldon, Dominion, and Kevin, Halifax, and sister, Annie Mae Horncastle, St. Thomas, Ont.
Her remains have been donated to Dalhousie Medical Centre. A memorial mass is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. in St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion.
Robert Hugh 'Bobby' Tellum
68, Glace Bay
Robert Hugh ‘Bobby’ Tellum, passed away Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, peacefully at home.
Bobbie was the son of the late Mabel (MacDonald) and Thomas Tellum, formerly of 25 McKeigan St., Glace Bay.
He was a member of Epworth United Church. He was on the board of directors and was active in various organizations in the church. Bobby was a proud and valued member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was always interested in supporting his friends. He will be sadly missed by the organization.
Bobby was also a former miner and at one time worked at the Fortress of Louisbourg. He was also a leader in the boy scout movement.
He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his grandsons playing hockey.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Fownes); three sons, Robert (Mindy), Sydney, David (Margaret), Louisbourg, Perry, Sydney; one daughter, Marguerite, Louisbourg; three grandsons; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Thomas (Sonny) (Mary), Massachusetts, and his very special cousin, Lily Copeland, Pictou County. He will greatly missed by his extended family and friends.
Visitation for the late Bobby Tellum will take place Monday, Feb. 19 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at The Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Funeral service to be held at Epworth United Church, 2 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial in Ocean Ave. Cemetery.
