Freeman Ellsworth (Hubby) Spencer
55, Glace Bay
Freeman Ellsworth (Hubby) Spencer, 55, of Glace Bay, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, surrounded by his loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was the son of the late George and Mabel (Clarke) Spencer.
He had been employed with Cape Breton Development Corporation working at No. 12 Colliery in New Waterford, No. 26 Colliery in Glace Bay and finally at Lingan Colliery in Lingan. For the past 10 years Hubby bravely fought a lengthy battle with Huntington’s Disease. In earlier years Hubby could be found at any community rink on Cape Breton Island following his three sons playing hockey. He was an avid fisherman and loved camping, playing darts and hockey.
Hubby is survived by his three sons, Tim (Terri), Ron (Cathy), both of New Waterford, and Dwayne (Heather) of Orangeville, Ont.; three grandchildren, Meghan, Morgan and Hannah; brothers, Lawrence (Dorthy), Dartmouth, Edward (Annie), Glace Bay, Raymond, Montreal, Tommy (Donna), Glace Bay; sisters, Rhoda Burns, New Waterford, Melissa (Larry) Smith, Stewiacke, N.S., Wilena Spencer, Sydney, Vangie (Ralph) Leck, Stewiacke, N.S. and Jean Spencer, Glace Bay.
Hubby was predeceased by a brother Robert and a sister Shirley.
Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral Service Wednesday 2 p.m. from Chalmers United Church, Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Cremation to follow.
Donations may be made to the Huntington’s Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice.

Willena May Spencer
57, Glace Bay
Willena May Spencer, 57, of Glace Bay and a resident of Breton Bay Nursing Home, Sydney, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001 at the Manor.
Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of the late George Edward and Mabel (Clarke) Spencer.
Willena will be sadly missed by daughter, Raylene Marie (James ‘Jimmie’) MacCuish; son, Charles Edward Spencer; brothers, Lawrence (Dorothy), Dartmouth, Edward (Annie), Glace Bay, Raymond, Montreal, Tommy (Donna), Glace Bay; sisters, Rhoda Burns, New Waterford, Melissa (Larry) Smith, Stewiacke, N.S., Vangie (Ralph) Leck, Stewiacke, N.S., and Jean Spencer, Glace Bay. Also surviving are grandsons James ‘Jimmy’ and Dustin MacCuish and Christopher Spencer.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Robert and Freeman and a sister, Shirley.
Visitation for the late Willena Spencer was held Tuesday 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Chalmers Untied Church, Dominion. Rev. Bill Matthews will be officiating. Interment at a later date. Donations in Willena’s memory to the Huntington’s Society of Nova Scotia or charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.

Rachel Morrison
82, Glace Bay
Rachel Morrison, 82, of 296 Phalen Road, Glace Bay, and formerly of Sixth Street, New Aberdeen, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, surrounded by her loving family.
A lifelong resident of Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John William and Margaret (Conway) Ralph.
Rachel was the last surviving member of her immediate family. As a member of Warden United Church, she was actively involved in the Ladies Guild and always maintained an interest in the activities at Warden until her death.
Quiet by nature, ‘Nan’s’ family was the focus of her life. She was truly a loving wife, a wonderful mother and grandmother. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Aulay; her devoted daughter, Charlotte (Rev. Duncan Roach); daughter-in-law, Karen Morrison and the lights of her life her two grandchildren, Christopher Roach, Halifax; and Jeanne Morrison, Truro.
She was predeceased by her beloved son, Jackie; sisters, Emma Jones, Muriel Hamood and Ethel MacCormick, brothers, William and Wilson Ralph.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Morrison will be held at Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Karen Ralph officiating assisted by Martha MacDonald. Interment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Donations in her memory may be made to Warden United Church or to a charity of choice.

Frank David Crocker
61, Glace Bay
Frank David Crocker, 61, of 263 Broughton Rd., passed away at home Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Derbishire) Crocker.
Frank was a member of Saint Anthony’s Parish, Glace Bay. He was employed at the Broughton Mine and also at No. 26 Colliery. He was the bridge operator for Mira Gut and worked for Neil MacKeigan Lumber Yard for the past 20 years. Frank was an excellent craftsman and enjoyed working in his workshop. He was a kind and generous man and will be missed by all.
Frank is survived by his loving wife, the former Betty (Thiel) Crocker; two sons, Ricky (Iris), Winnipeg, Brent (Ann), Reserve Mines; three daughters, Ellana (Rodney) MacFarlane, Colista (Eric) Smith, Glace Bay and Melinda, Dominion. Also surviving are brothers, Jack, Glace Bay, Arthur, Mira; sisters, Jeanette Wagg, New Brunswick, Betty MacLeod, Glace Bay, Donna Babstock, Glace Bay, Olive Brown, Mira, and Debbie Lockwood, Toronto. He will also be forever missed by his six grandchildren, Richie, Miranda, Jennifer, Tania, Jordan and Ashley.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two sons in infancy and his brother Kent.
Visitation for the late Frank Crocker will be held Tuesday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Saint Anthony’s Church with Fr. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Catherine MacKinnon
84, Glace Bay
Catherine MacKinnon, 84, of Seaview Manor, formerly of Barron Drive, Glace Bay, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at the manor.
Born in Big Pond, she was a daughter of the late Dan J. and Isabelle (MacIntyre) MacDonald.
She was a devoted member of Holy Cross Parish and dedicated her life to her family.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Nicholson, Aurora, Ont. and Donalda ‘Peanie’ MacDonald, Glace Bay; son, Jackie, Seaview Manor; sisters, Effie MacKinnon, Northside East Bay, and Mary MacKinnon, Glace Bay; brother, Michael MacDonald, Boston; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alex ‘Sandy’ MacKinnon, sisters, Betty and Rachael.
Visitation will be held at Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church with Rev. John Graham officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, East Bay.
Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of choice.

Michael McVeigh
66, Glace Bay
Michael McVeigh, 150 Connaught Ave., Glace Bay, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001.
Born in Inverness, C.B., he was a son of the late Michael and Rose (LeBlanc) McVeigh.
He was a graduate of MacDonald High School, Dominion. He was employed at the Glace Bay Central Credit Union as loan manager until his retirement. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Bridgeport, and for many years was a member of the choir as well as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife, the former Lima McIntyre; two daughters, Rosemary Erlanger (Chris), Las Vegas, Nev., and Patricia Sponagle (James), Sydney; two sons, Barry (Pauletta), Brampton, Ont., and Kenneth and fiance Judy, Halifax; four grandchildren, Kristen, Michael, Kaitlyn and Chelsey; two sisters, Rose MacNeil, P.E.I., and Mary Tyndall (Butch), Clinton, Ont.; three brothers, Peter, Lawrence ‘Hopper’ and Gerald (Carol), all of Dominion.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, James.
Visitation for Mike will be in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, today (Tuesday), 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Rev. James Oliver officiating. Interment at a later date in Calvary Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care, Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of one’s choice.
The Glace Bay Council Knights of Columbus will meet at the funeral home Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for prayer service.
