Ronald G. 'Sonny' Aucoin
66, Glace Bay
Ronald G. ‘Sonny’ Aucoin, 66, of 133 Mansfield St., Glace Bay, died at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late James and Mercedes (Cloombe) Aucoin of Newfoundland.
Sonny was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish, Glace Bay, and a long-time member of the Carmelite Order. He was an altar server at Holy Cross Parish for a number of years. He had been employed for over 20 years as a bus driver for Cape Breton Transit from where he retired. He loved the outdoors and particularly enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by five sons, Leonard Larkham, Glace Bay, Greg, Ronald, Paul Aucoin, all of Glace Bay, and Robert Aucoin, Ontario; special grandson, Allan Spinney Jr., as well as Brian, Jennifer, Ashley, Amanda, Leonard, and Rhonda. He is also survived by a long-time good friend, Hazel MacIntyre; three brothers, Jude, Steve, and Jerry, all of Glace Bay; five sisters, Caroline, Carmel, Stasia, Mary and Lorraine.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, the former Rita Larkham, daughter, Rose Marie Spinney, sister, Pearl, two brothers, Frank and Danny and a grandson, Billy.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Curry Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Church, Rev. Peter LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Mary E. Davey
72, Glace Bay / Oshawa
Mary E. Davey, 72, of 17B Myrman Dr., Glace Bay, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Annie (Cann) Sweet.
Mary was an adherent of Warden United Church, Glace Bay. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Branch 128, Whitney Pier and former president of Branch No. 43 Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Oshawa, Ont.
She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Arthur George; sons, Gerald Wayne, Newmarket, Ont., Paul Michael, Tecumseh, Ont., Ronald Arthur, Bowmanville, Ont., and Allan E. Ross, Calgary, Alta.; brothers, Raymond Trueman Sweet, Ottawa, Ont., and Charles Douglas Sweet, Glace Bay, N.S.; sisters, Lydia Blanche Steele, Glace Bay, N.S., Gloria Juanita Payn, Yarmouth, N.S., and Eileen Ann Taylor, Point Edward, N.S. Also sadly missed by a special ‘Halifax Angel’, her favourite niece, Betty Anne MacDonald, numerous nieces and nephews and nine grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Edith Bowler, Oshawa, Ont.
Visitation for Mrs. Davey will be held Friday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Mrs. Davey will be transferred to Armstrong Funeral Home, Oshawa, Ont. for an additional visitation and funeral service.
No flowers by request of the family. Donations in Mary’s memory to a charity of choice are suggested as an expression of sympathy.
Edwin MacDonald
69, Glace Bay
Edwin MacDonald, 69, of 32 Argyle St., Glace Bay, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Alex and Maud (Goodwin) MacDonald.
Edwin was a member of the John Bernard Croak Branch 3 Legion, Glace Bay, and he served in the Korean War.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Marie (Dunn) MacDonald; daughters, Wynne (Pat) Tiernan, Ontario, Laurie (Michael) Legnaro, Glace Bay, Layne (Van) Taylor, Ontario; sons, Barry (Sue), Ontario, Kerry (Karen), Ontario, Lindsay (Shelly), Halifax; stepson, Lloyd Young, Ontario; sisters, Florrie Hare, Truro, Mabel Ellis, Ontario; and 15 grandchildren.
Predeceased by brothers, Alton, Allister and Charles in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held Saturday, March 3 at 2 p.m. in the Patten Funeral Home Chapel, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, with the Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Edwin’s memory may be made to the Two Rivers Wildlife Park, Marion Bridge.
Alexander (Alex) James Burchell
76, Glace Bay
Alexander (Alex) Burchell, 76, of 41 Morrison St. and formerly Nelsons Lane, passed away Thursday March 1, 2001, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Ernest and Annie (MacDonald) Burchell.
Alex was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay. Alex served overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders in the Second World War, he was a life member of the John Bernard Croak Royal Canadian Legion Branch 3 and the Glace Bay Pensioners Club and he worked with the Dominion Coal Co. until he retired in 1957.
Alex is survived by Sheila, Robyn and Taylor, Glace Bay, with whom he resided; brothers Howard, Glace Bay, Arthur ‘Peg’, Sarnia, Ont., Leonard, Halifax, and also by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by brothers, Patty, Joe, Danny, Jack, Willy, Robert (Tunney), Ernie and sister, Margaret ‘Peggy’ MacDonald.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 3 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Canon Rev. Fev Arnold officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
Arrangements are entrusted to Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union Street, Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or charity of choice.
Neil R. MacKenzie, RN
69, Glace Bay
Neil R. MacKenzie, RN, 69 of 5 Walsh’s Lane, Bridgeport, Glace Bay, died at the QE II Health Science Centre, Halifax, Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001.
He was born in Glace Bay and was the son of the late Stephen and Mary (Tobin) MacKenzie.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, graduated from St. Anne’s High School and served with the Royal Canadian Airforce (RCAF) as a registered nurse for 25 years, retiring in 1974.
After returning home he was employed for a period of time with Devco as an underground medical technician.
He is survived by a son, Alexander, Texas; and sisters, Anita MacKay, New Glasgow, Marjorie McNeil, Margie Boone, Josie (Arnold) Devison, all of Glace Bay, and Betty (Tom) Postlewaite, Barrie, Ont. Also a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he is predeceased by a sister, Anne Shaughnessy, a brother, Alex and an infant brother and two infant sisters.
Visitation will be in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church, Monday at 11 a.m.. Rev. James Oliver will officiate.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Muriel M. MacKinnon
92, Glace Bay
Muriel M. MacKinnon, 92, of 21 McKeigan Lane, Glace Bay, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, March 3, 2001, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Muriel was born October 18, 1908, and was the daughter of the late George and Theresa (Lamont) Layes.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Parish and employed at one time at Point Edward Hospital as a certified nursing assistant for 21 years.
She is survived by daughters Theresa (Michael) Hill, Glace Bay, Carmella (Leonard) Wadden, Glace Bay, Donna (Arthur) Campbell, Sydney, Madeline (Thomas) King, Ontario; son Fabian (Patricia) MacKinnon, Glace Bay.
Affectionately knows as “Grammie,” she is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by sisters Georgina (Murray) McDonald, Glace Bay, Anastasia (Gordon) McAuley, Kentville, brother Lloyd (Rita) Layes, Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Lawrence Cosmos MacKinnon; three sons, Edmond, Lawrence Murray and Joseph; three brothers Joseph, Charles and Leroy; sister Claire and one in infancy.
Visitation for the late Muriel MacKinnon will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church with Father John Graham officiating.
Burial will be in Saint Anne’s Cemetery at a later date.
Knights of Columbus will gather at the funeral home for prayers 7:30 p.m. Monday evening.
