Alex J. MacNeil
76, New Waterford
Alex J. MacNeil, 76, of 381 Arthur St., New Waterford, formerly of Main-a-Dieu, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 12, 2001, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Oct. 23, 1924, in St. Margaret’s Village, Victoria County, he was the son of the late Sara MacNeil, Newton, Mass, U.S.A.
Alex is survived by his wife, Leona (Lathigee); three daughters, Patricia (Gary) Pozzebon, Gardiner Mines, Maureen (James) Babin, Sydney, Rosita and the late Billy MacNeil, Sydney, one son, Anthony ‘Tony’, Ontario; daughter-in-law, Wilma, Prime Brook. Alex J. was also survived by a sister, Mary Margaret Burton, Neil’s Harbour; eight grandchildren, Tony, Jason, Mark, Chris, David, Jennifer, Joelle and Molly; one great-grandchild, Emily, also nephews, Cyril (Linda) Burton, Melvin (Debbie) Burton.
Alex served with the RCAF from 1943 to 1946 and over the years, he held various positions. He was employed with the Co-Op as a fisheries manager also with Parks Canada, Louisbourg and later, worked in the construction field as a carpenter. He also served a time as a Victoria County councillor.
A 1978 accident left Alex partially disabled, however, he kept his sharp wit and turned his pen hand to writing short stories and poetry. Alex was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Visitation will be held in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, today (Wednesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Thursday, 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church, with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating and Fr. Tom Lathigee concelebrating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Alex J., donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Donalda Gertrude (Donna Whalen) MacPherson
New Waterford
It is with the deepest sense of loss that Lawrence MacPherson, along with his son, Edward, and daughter, Lauren, of RR#1 Roaches Road, announce the passing of his wife and their mother, Donna.
Following an extended illness with cancer, Donna passed away Saturday afternoon, March 17, 2001.
She will be sorely missed. Donna was a 1968 graduate of the former St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Glace Bay, where after graduation she spent a number of years in nursing care. Family members, friends and relatives will remember her as a faithful spouse and dedicated mother whose spirit of hospitality, generosity and independence were a special mark of her gifted personality. She was an active member of Mount Carmel Parish, New Waterford.
Born in New Waterford Nov. 17, 1946, she was the daughter of Gertrude Whalen (MacMillan) and the late Edward Whalen.
Donna is survived by her husband, Lawrence; son, Edward; daughter, Lauren, both of Ottawa; sisters, Irene Springall (Danny), Agnes MacLean (Norman), Elizabeth Fougere (Albert), residing in New Waterford, Margaret Burke (Pius), Amherst; brother, Edward (Barbara), Costa Mesa, Calif.
Visitation will take place Tuesday, March 20, 2001, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Immediately following visitation, all are invited to join in a concelebrated mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church with Father Donald MacGillivray, Father Albert MacPherson, Father Damian MacPherson and Father John J. MacDonald officiating. Interment will take place at the Parish Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Donalda Gertrude MacPherson of New Waterford who died Saturday, March 17, 2001, was predeceased by daughter, Carol Ann, who died in infancy and a half-sister, Ruby LeBlanc.
Celia Claener
92, New Waterford
Celia Claener, 92, of 373 Hudson St., New Waterford passed away Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Gertrude (Dubinsky) Rukasin.
Celia owned Claeners Grocery until her retirement in 1978. She was an active member of Hebrew Temple Sons of Israel, Sydney, as well as a member of the Sisterhood of Hadassah, Rebecca Chapter and IODE.
Celia was well known for her baking skills through her contributions to various functions.
She is survived by sons, Joel, Toronto, Irwin and his wife Alydia, New Waterford, with whom she resided; one daughter, Rhoda and her husband Paul, Thornhill, Ont.; grandchildren, Gayle Claener, Michelle and Jordon Smith, Thornhill, Ont.; sister, Jen Scher; and nephew, Mayer Saul (Cheryl), Troy, New York.
She was predeceased by her husband, Sam; and a sister, Sophie.
Celia will be sadly missed by family, neighbors and friends, especially Jimmy, Sadie and Jemima.
In keeping with Celia’s request, she will be under the care of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (862-6439).
A memorial service will take place at the funeral home Monday (today), March 26, 2001 at 2 p.m.
Burial will follow in the Hebrew Cemetery, Sydney.
Shiva will take place at the Family residence, 373 Hudson St., New Waterford.

George Collin Donovan
71, New Waterford
George C. Donovan, 71, of 763 Downe St., New Waterford, died March 25, 2001 at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late George and Alice (Walsh) Donovan.
George was a member of Mt. Carmel Church, New Waterford. He was employed as a coal miner in No. 16 and No. 18 collieries. He later worked as a coal hauler and also did maintenance work at the Adult Vocational School.
George was an avid sports fan; he loved playing softball and skating. He was involved in the Dosco and Devco Softball Leagues.
George is survived by his wife, the former Mary Mocilan; daughter, Deborah (Mrs. Blair MacDonald), New Waterford; son, George (Bernadette), Lower Sackville; brothers, John (Denie), Brockton, Mass., U.S.A., Neil (Marion), New Waterford, Mylie (Susie) Mississauga, Ont.; sisters, Mary Wilson, Lower Sackville, Caroline White, New Waterford, Rosie (Mrs. Raymond Barton), Mississauga, Ont., Rita (Mrs. Harold Purdy), Florida; four grandchildren, Matthew, Blair, Allison and Emily.
George was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary Georgina; three sisters, Bridget MacNeil, Margaret Sylvester and Anna White.
Visitation will take place Wednesday from 9 a.m. at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford (862-6439) until time of mass at 11 a.m. in Mt. Carmel Church, Fr. Donald McGillivray officiating. Interment in St. Michael's Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for George donations may be made to a charity of choice or the N.S. Alzheimer s Association.
Marjorie MacPherson
77, New Waterford
Marjorie G. MacPherson, 77, of 3363 Hinchey Ave., New Waterford, died Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ida (Phillips) MacKinnon.
Marjorie was a member of Calvin United Church in New Waterford.
She is survived by sons, Gary (Agnes), Truro and Angus, at home; brother, Joseph, Louisbourg; three grandchildren, Gary Jr., Justin and Ashley.
She was predeceased by sisters, Olive Pozzebon and Jean MacKinnon; brothers, Charlie and John.
Marjorie was also predeceased by her husband, Angus, April 4, 1983.
Visitation will take place Monday (today) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St. New Waterford (862-6439). Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Burial in Union Grove Cemetery. Mrs. MacPherson will be taken to the church at noon Wednesday.
