Joseph Burns
63, New Waterford
Francis Joseph Burns, age 63, of 513 George St., New Waterford, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late Michael and Sarah Kendall Burns.
He was a member of Mount Carmel Parish, an avid card and dart player and he was a retired coal miner, working in the mines for 29 years in number 12, 18 and Lingan collieries. He will be sadly missed by all his friends at the Army Navy unit 217 New Waterford.
He is survived by his wife, the former Shirley Geraldine MacLeod; five daughters, Mary (John Jeffery), Ontario, Shirley (Alan Groom), Ontario, Frankie (Aubrey Burns) Ontario, Kathy (Scott MacPhee), New Waterford, and Eleanor (Terrance Roach), New Waterford; six sons, Danny (Lisa) Burns, Gussy (Caroline) Burns, Freddie (Linda) Burns, all of New Waterford, Andrew (Brenda) Burns, New Brunswick, Tommy (Debbie) Burns and Roy (Catherine), both of Ontario; five brothers, Raymond, New Waterford, Michael, P.E.I., Andrew, Ontario, Michael (Pepper) and John (Mick), Glace Bay; six sisters, Marion (Mrs. Thomas Harris) Ontario, Jackie (Mrs. Arthur Camus), Cheticamp, Theresa (Mrs. Bill Burns), New Waterford, Caroline (Mrs. Cecil Keeping), New Waterford, and Mary Ellen (Mrs. Charlie Leblanc), New Waterford. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren
He was predeceased by one brother, John and one sister, Florence Hurley.
The remains will rest at the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home 380 Smith St., New Waterford 2-4, 7-9 Thursday.
Funeral mass will be held Friday 11 a.m. at Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating.
Burial in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke or to Nova Scotia Diabetes Association.
Dee Dee (Jessie) Shaw
68, New Waterford
Dee Dee (Jessie) Shaw, 68, of 3138 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late Neil and Bridget (Morrison) Crowe.
Dee was a member of Mount Carmel parish and a retired employee of the Fortress of Louisbourg (Parks Canada).
Surviving are daughters, Daphne (Mrs. Rick MacLeod), New Waterford, Heather (Mrs. John Miller), Petawawa, Ont.; son, David (Ivy) Shaw, Sydney; brothers, Doug Crowe, Charlie (Cavelle) Crowe, both of New Waterford; sisters, Renee Fortune, New Waterford, Nancy Corbett, Dominion, Jackie Anthony, Sydney, Kay (Clarence) Sampson, Glace Bay, and Mary Henry, Petawawa, Ont; five grandchildren, Ainslie, Lauren, Heather, Becky and Michelle.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Thomas, brother, Lauchie ‘Buster’ Crowe.
There will be no visitation by request of the family. Funeral, under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford, will be held Saturday, March 31 at 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Cremation to follow with burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
Barney (Bohumil) Pastuck
95, New Waterford
Barney (Bohumil) Pastuck, 95, of New Waterford, died on Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the New Waterford Hospital.
He was the son of the late Frank and Amelia Pastuck.
Barney was born in Czechoslovakia. Barney worked in various coal mines for 45 years, retiring in 1962. He was at his best tinkering around old cars. Barney also enjoyed a good game of cards and watching sports on TV. He was a member of New Waterford Pensioners Club.
Barney was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his daughter, Hilda and sons, Tony (Betty), Glace Bay, and Raymond (Sandra), Dave (Kit), Kenny (Agnes) and Russell, daughter-in-law, Mary, all of New Waterford.
He is also survived by stepdaughters, Marie, Sylvia, Theresa and stepsons, Alex, Hector, Bernie, Daniel, Leonard and Bill; also 27 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Lillian (Matlock) and second wife, Anne (MacPherson) and also by sons, George, Ernie and by a stepdaughter, Cleo. Barney was also predeceased by sisters, Sophie, Bessy, Stella, Elizabeth and Mary and by a brother, Joe.
Funeral mass will be held today at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s Church, River Ryan, cremation to follow.
Interment will take place at a later date.
Donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Funeral is under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford.
Cecile Boudreau
New Waterford
Cecile Boudreau of 641 Acadia St., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford.
Born in Cheticamp on Jan. 22, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Leoni and Julie (LeBlanc) Chiasson.
Cecile was married to the late Leo C. Boudreau for 67 years.
Mrs. Boudreau is survived by one daughter, Mary Julia (Louis Joseph) LeFort, three sons, Albert (Kay Ellsworth), Ernest (Carolyn Poirier), Wilfred (Velma Cathcart), all of New Waterford; 12 grandchildren, Denise, Claude, Gerard, Paul, Paulette, Andre, Mary Beth, Cecile, Rachelle, Blair, Mary Claire and Monique; nine great-grandchildren.
Cecile was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leo C., and infant daughter, Mary Catherine, sisters, Catherine Aucoin, Cheticamp, Mary Harris, New Waterford, brother, Joseph Chiasson, Waltham, Mass.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. Funeral services will take place Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Mount Carmel Church with Fr. Donald MacGillivray officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
The Knights of Columbus are asked to attend a prayer service in the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Diane Elizabeth (Fraser) Kearney
50, New Waterford
Diane Elizabeth (Fraser) Kearney, 50, of 470 Second St., died at the New Waterford hospital on Friday, April 13, 2001, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in New Waterford, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Ursula Fraser.
She was a member of St. Agnes Church.
Diane and her husband Jay co-managed Harvey’s Restaurant for the past19 years until her illness. Diane’s friendliness will be missed by her many customers and friends.
She is survived by her husband, Jay; and her three children, Tara, Halifax, Jay Jr. and Mark, New Waterford, and by a grandson, Ryan. Diane is also survived by sisters, Claudia (Wayne), Mahone Bay, Shelia (Joe), Toronto, and Allana, New Waterford; by brothers, Richard (Marie) and David, both of Toronto, and Michael (Sharon) and Robert (Lee), both of New Waterford; and two half-sisters, Rita and Ellen.
She is also survived by three very special sisters-in-law, Margaret Ann, Cornelia and Marie; and brother-in-law, Layton.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by an infant brother, Leonard.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home. A memorial mass will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 16, 2001, at St. Agnes Church, New Waterford with Fr. Bob Neville officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
