Earl Wilson Stubbert
70, Bras d’Or
Earl Wilson Stubbert, 70, of 782 Point Aconi Rd., died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Point Aconi, he was the son of the late Peter and Margaret (MacQueen) Stubbert.
He was a member of the Clyde Avenue, Baptist Church and was a retired miner having worked in No. 1 and No. 3 collieries.
He is survived by three sisters, Ethel Pendergast, North Sydney, Bethena (Mrs. Lloyd MacDonald), Sydney, Mary Margaret Aareal, Norway; three brothers, Emmerson and Robert, both of Point Aconi and Wellington, North Sydney.
He was predeceased by brothers, Tommy, Peter Edward, George, Lauchie and Duncan and sisters, Ester, Julie and Alice.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Clyde Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Allison MacLean officiating. Burial will be in the Point Aconi Cemetery.
Arthur G. Cashin
79, Bras d’Or
Arthur Griffith Cashin, 79, a resident of Church Road, Bras d’Or, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late James and Rose (Healey) Cashin.
He served with the Canadian Army overseas during the Second World War. He worked in his earlier years at L.A. Steele Ford in North Sydney and later as licence examiner with the N.S. Department of Motor Vehicles until his retirement. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 19, North Sydney, member of Bras d’Or Pensioners Club, former member of Santa Maria Council Knights of Columbus, Sydney Mines.
Surviving are his wife, Teresa (O’Toole) Cashin; daughter, Cindy, at home; three brothers, Lloyd (Elizabeth), North Sydney, Richard (Mary), Bras d’Or, and Jerome, Bras d’Or.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Frank, Martin, Jim and Dr. Herman.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass 2 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
Edward Squires
83, Bras d'Or
Edward (Teddy) Squires, 83, of Big Bras d’Or, died peacefully at home, Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000.
Born in Florence to the late Jack and Florrie (Stephenson) Squires, the family moved to Big Bras d’Or, several years after his birth, where he remained, except for four years overseas in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. It was during that time, he met and married Irene Hefford, his beloved wife of 53 years, who also died at home, in 1996.
Teddy spent much of his working life as captain of the ferry boat at Big Bras d’Or, until its replacement by the Seal Island Bridge in 1961. Subsequently, he returned to fishing, carpentry and electrical work.
He was an active member of the Royal Oak Lodge No. 85, and Victory Chapter No. 18, and a founding member of the Big Bras d’Or Fire Department.
In the past few years, Teddy continued to support his community by donating numerous hand made items for fund-raising activities of the local fire dept. ladies auxiliary, the Boularderie School Support Group, and the Big Wave Summer Festival Committee.
Survived by one daughter, Dorinda McCully (Ralph), Antigonish; sons, Stuart (Kathy) and Kevin (Pat Collins), Big Bras d’Or; grandchildren, Trent, Shawn, Darcy, Sara Beth, Jonathan and Emma Jean; two great-grandchildren, Francis and Siandra; one sister, Emily (Harry) Fisk, Montreal and his youngest brother, James (Peggy), Big Bras d’Or.
Teddy was predeceased by infant daughter, Edna, as well as two brothers, William and John R.
Visitation will take place at Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, today (Tuesday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Masonic service immediately prior to evening visitation. Funeral services to be held in St. James’ Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’Or, Wednesday, 3 p.m. with Rev. Donald MacGuire officiating. Burial will follow in St. James’ Cemetery.

Charles Richard Anthony
62, Bras d'Or
Charles Richard Anthony, 62, of Brady Drive, Bras d’Or, died on Monday, Oct. 16, 2000, at home.
Born in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of the late Charles George and Dorothy Mae (Evans) Anthony.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or. He worked as a captain in the House of Corrections in Middleton, Mass., retiring in 1995. He moved to Cape Breton in 1998.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Williams); his son, Charles Richard Jr. (Rebecca), Marriotta, Ga.; his granddaughter, Zoe; his sister, Barbara (Steven) Bona, New Hampshire; his brothers, David (Frances), Burlington, Mass. and Robert (Margaret), Maine.
He was predeceased by his aunt, Lavinia.
Visitation Friday 7-9 p.m. only in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Saturday 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Neil MacLeod
74, Big Bras d'Or
Neil MacLeod, age 74, of Big Bras d’0r, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, at his home.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Dan R. and Florence (Reid) MacLeod.
He was an adherent of St. James Presbyterian Church, Big Bras d’0r, and was a member of the Operating Engineers Association. He a heavy equipment operator, retired from Martell’s Construction.
He is survived by his wife, the former Florence Patterson; daughter, Arlene (Mrs. Joseph Bennett), Ross Ferry; sons, Charles (Patsy) and Angus, both of Big Bras d’0r, Glenn (Florrie), Fox Creek, Alta.; sister, Mary Patterson, Brantford, Ont.; and grandchildren, Shawn (Kristy), Angela, Amy-Jo, Malcolm, Joey, Stephanie, Charles, Katie Jane and Dylan.
He was predeceased by a son in infancy; sisters, Margaret Westenburg and Catherine Tait; and brothers, William, Murdock, John and Donald.
Visitation will be Thursday in the Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Richie Robinson officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to any charity.
David Henry O'Toole
70, Bras d'Or
David Henry O’Toole, 70, 813 Alder Point Road, Bras d’Or, passed away peacefully at the Northside General Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000.
He was born in Alder Point, the son of the late David and Harrietta (LeBlanc) O’Toole.
He was a member of St. Ann’s Church, Alder Point. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #83, Florence. David belonged to the Bras d’Or Senior Citizens Pensioners Club. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father William Kiley Council 5109, North Sydney. David was very active in the community and frequently played music for the residents of the Northside Guest Home in North Sydney.
He is survived by his wife, the former Mary Cecilia (LeBlanc); son Michael (Matilda), Alder Point; two grandchildren Michael Ryan and Tanya; two sisters Marjorie Dawe, Kitchener Ont., and Muriel MacNeil, Boston Mass. He is also survived by a number of loving nieces and nephews.
David was predeceased by five brothers, Clifford, who died overseas, Lester, Gerald, Lloyd and Russell, and a sister Marion Dawe.
Visitation will be held Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral Mass Wednesday, Nov. 22, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann’s Church, Alder Point, with Fr. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Bras d’Or.
He will be sadly missed by family members and friends.
Hubert Bernard Colvey
75, Bras d'Or
Hubert Bernard Colvey, 75, of 6 Russell Dr., Bras d’Or, passed away Saturday April 7, 2001 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Bras d’Or, he was the son of the late Hartland and Rita (Jessome) Colvey.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or, and a life member of Branch 83 Royal Canadian Legion, Florence. He worked for 11 years on the Great Lakes and 31 years at CN Marine. He retired in 1984.
Hubert is survived by his wife, Pearl (MacLennan) Colvey; his son, Bernard (Laura) MacLennan, Sydney Mines; and his granddaughter; Tania.
Also surviving are his sisters; Mary Walker and Juanita (James) Powers; and his brother, Thomas Colvey. He was predeceased by his brothers, Stephen and Lewis.
Visitation today (Monday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis & Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Bedford Doucette and Rev. Sandy MacNeil officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the N.S. Heart & Stroke Foundation or charity of choice.
