Arthur V. King
76, Bras d'Or
Arthur Vincent King, 76, well known resident of Bras d’Or, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Bras d’Or, he was a son of the late Harry and Florence ‘Floss’ (Clifford) King.
He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, he was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas with the Provost Corp. He was the founder of the A-K Lick A Chick and A-K Lick A Treat fast food restaurants in Bras d’Or. He was an avid horse racing fan and owned many race horses of his own for many years.
Surviving are two sisters, Mae Todd, Dartmouth, N.S. and Marion (Mrs. Bill Savalaine), Orleans, Ont.; three brothers, Ernie, George’s River, Ralph (Rodney), Bras d’Or and Wilfred (Florence), Bras d’Or. Also by a number of nieces and nephews and special friend and care giver, Pearl Skinner, Antigonish.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Bill King.
No visitation by request. Cremation will take place and a private family graveside committal service will be held at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bras d’Or at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, North Sydney.
Louis (Bonnar) Prince
86, Big Bras d'Or
Mrs. Louise (Bonnar) Prince, 86, of Big Bras d’Or, and formerly of Sydney Mines, died peacefully at home Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001.
Born at Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Levina (Bonner) Bonnar.
She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church and was a loving mother and friend to all.
She is survived by her daughter, Louise (Charles) Iannetti, Big Bras d’Or; sons, Daniel (Toni), Howie Centre, Clarence (Catherine), James (Joan), both of Sydney Mines; daughter-in-law, Marie, Florence; brothers, Jim (Betty) Bonnar and Alex (Barbara) Bonnar, both of Sydney Mines; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Prince in 1991, son, Louie, sisters, Sarah Vickers, Mary Scullen, Jessie Bonnar and brothers, Daniel, George and Wendell.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Duncan R. MacKay
77, Bras d'Or
Duncan R. MacKay, 77, of 48 Church Rd., Bras d’Or, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Upper Baddeck, he was the son of the late John and Jennie (Latham) MacKay.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas in Continental Europe. He spent most of his adult life working in Boston, Mass. After his retirement, he returned to Cape Breton.
He is survived by his wife, Frances (Quinn) MacKay; son, Joe (Ann), Tewksbury, Mass.; daughter, Ann Frances (Danny B.) MacLean, Millville; his grandsons, his brothers, Gesner and Alfred; and his sister, Mary.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine and Anna; his brother, John; a daughter and a grandson in infancy.
At his request cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
Francis Joseph O'Connor
80, Big Bras d'Or
Francis Joseph O’Connor, 80, of Big Bras d’Or, passed away Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Campbellton, N.B., he was the son of the late Daniel Francis and Sarah Elizabeth (Doucette) O’Connor.
He was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or. Frank was owner/operator of the Frankaleen Beach and Campground for many years. He was a naval veteran of the Second World War, serving overseas for five years.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen (Walsh); his daughters, Elaine Finn and Patricia Jones, both in Toronto, Cheryl MacDonald, Ingonish, Tammy Eveleigh, Sydney Mines and Mary Lou, in Toronto; his sons, Francis, Toronto, Michael, Trois Rivieres, Que.; 14 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter. Also surviving are his sisters, Nora, Alder Point, Margaret, Mona, Inez and Marie, all in British Columbia; and his brothers, Eddie, St. Peter’s, Donny, Truro, Emmett, Sydney Mines, Dan, Ottawa, and John, Bras d’Or.
He was predeceased by his brother Cosmos; his sister, Mary; and his daughter, Linda.
Visitation today (Monday) 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or, Rev. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial in parish cemetery.
Patricia Ann Carey
72, Bras d'Or
Patricia Anne Carey, 72, of Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney.
Born March 31, 1927, in Bras d’Or, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Ann (Waugh) Harrietha.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or.
She is survived by sons, Gregory (Peggy), North Sydney, Eric, St. James Road, Boularderie, Ashley (Karen), Halifax; daughters, Barbara Kowalski, Sydney, Rev. Judith Saunders (Donnie), Kentville, Jane Rose (Tommy), North Sydney, Angela (Billy) Handrahan, Coldbrook; brother, Michael (Mick) (Netty) Harrietha, Millcreek; sisters, Margaret Harrietha and Irene Rideout, Millcreek; 18 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Thomas P. Carey, son, Kevin, brothers, Daniel, John (Jack), Fernando (Andy), sisters, Velma Bona and Josie O’Shea.
Visitation will take place on Monday, Feb. 12, at the G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Fr. Bedford Doucette officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Joseph’s Hall Building Fund, St. Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or.
Annie Theresa (Anna) MacLeod
80, Big Bras d'Or
Mrs. Annie Theresa (Anna) MacLeod, 80, of 46 Ferry Rd., Big Brad d’Or, and formerly of Florence, died Sunday, March 11, 2001 at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Margaret (Morrison) Peet.
She was a member of Wilson United Church, Florence. In her earlier years, she was a well known pianist and organist, using her talent to foster young performers. For many years, Annie trained children from Florence schools for the popular High Society television show and other local talent concerts.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald D.; daughters, Donalda (Mrs. Louis Kyte), Millville, Ruth (Mrs. George MacNeil), Mill Creek; sons, Ronald, St. Margaret’s Bay, Daniel (Judy), Big Bras d’Or; her sister, Edna (Mrs. Ken Cornell), Wolfville; brothers, James (Buddy) (Mary Ann), Dartmouth, Thomas (Ruby), British Columbia; nine grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Roddie.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today (Monday) from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Wilson United Church with Rev. Allan Hallett officiating, assisted by Rev. Donald MacGuire. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery. As memorials, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Wilson United Church.
Louis Edward Kyte
60, Big Bras d'Or
Mr. Louis Edward Kyte, age 60, of 465 Millville Highway, Big Bras d’Or, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of Rose (Joseph) Kyte and the late Isaac Kyte.
He was a member of St. John’s United Church, Big Bras d’Or and was a member of the CID and the Muscular Distrophy Association. Prior to retirement, he was employed with Keddy’s Motor Inns, the Cape Breton Business Centre and the Bonnie Jean Restaurant at Seal Island.
He is survived by his wife, Donalda (MacLeod) Kyte; daughter, Dana (John) MacNeil, Sydney; son, Jerry (France) Kyte, Ottawa; stepdaughters, Ruth (Wally) MacAulay, Glace Bay, Peggi Musgrave, Florence, Neila (Eugene) Lee, Hampton, N.B., Amy (Paul) Young, Millcreek.
Louis cherished the love and thrived on the company of his 12 grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters, Marie Kyte, Glace Bay, Patsy (George) Martell, Peggy (Keith) Davis, Karen (Gordon) Crow, all of Calgary, May (Peter) Madore, Ontario; and brothers, Tom (Evette), Bathurst, and Richard (Janice), Calgary.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. John’s United Church, Big Bras d’Or with Rev. Louis Ihasz officiating. Burial will be in Black Rock Cemetery. As memorials, donations may be made to the Muscular Distrophy Association, CID or to St. John’s United Church.
