Ronald MacIntyre
77, Sydney Mines
Ronald MacIntyre, 77, of 3 Cable St., Sydney Mines, passed away peacefully Jan. 1, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of the late William Archibald and Mary Catherine (Brown) MacIntyre.
Ronald retired after 33 years with Devco. He was a Sunday school teacher and a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines.
Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, Elizabeth Bailey; son, John (Marlene) Bailey, North Sydney; daughters, Margaret, at home, Mary (Gary) Jessome, Barbara Ann (Kenny Nougent), all of Sydney Mines; brothers, Charles (Ann), Sydney Mines; sisters, Mary Gordon, New Brunswick, Pearl MacKenzie, Florida; eight grandchildren; and one special son, Joey MacIntyre.
He was predeceased by a brother Earl, in infancy.
Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral service 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Sydney Mines. Burial in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines.
Lawerence 'Jerry' Jerimiah Whitty
50, Sydney Mines
‘Jerry’ Whitty, 50, of 24 MacInnis St., Sydney Mines, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born June 8, 1950, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Isabelle (Mills) Whitty.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines. Jerry was an employee at National Sea Products, North Sydney, for many years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 8, Sydney Mines and enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and being involved in many dart leagues.
Surviving are his wife, the former Deborah Ann Brown; two sons, Terry Lawrence (Mari Ann), Sydney Mines, James Patrick (Angie), at home; one brother, John Thomas MacLeod; one grandson, Charles Patrick; one Godchild and niece, Miranda Lee Mills; five aunts, Allina ‘Ma’, Edith, Charlotte, Sis and Deloris; two uncles, Neil MacLeod ‘Sonny’ and Bernie MacLeod; two nieces, Michelle Jackman and Mary MacLeod and three nephews, James Jackman (Corrine), Michael MacLeod and Paulie. Also survived by a number of cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Lorraine Mills, mother-in-law, Jessie E. Brown, one sister-in-law, Hilda I. Jackman, two aunts, Betty MacInnis and Margarette Brown, three uncles, Lawrence MacLeod, Archibald MacLeod and Bart MacLeod.
Visitation for the late Mr. Whitty will be held today (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home Chapel with Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Whitty family.
Christine (Teeny Gardiner) Read
53, Sydney Mines
Christine Read, 53, of Peck Street, Sydney Mines, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was a daughter of Annabell (Steele) Gardiner and the late John Joseph Gardiner.
Besides her mother, Christine is survived by her husband, Donald (Jim) Read; her daughter, Stephanie, Sydney Mines; her son, Donald, at home; her brothers, Joseph, Greenwood, Ronnie and Andrew, both in Sydney Mines; sisters, Margaret (Marcelle) Pierrard and Josephine MacKenzie, both in Baddeck, Florence (David) Forrest, Sydney Mines, Effie (David) Pentecost, Calgary, Judy (William) Steele, North Sydney, Darlene and Barbara, both in Sydney; her granddaughters, Nicole and Kristie and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sister, Joan Matthys; and her brothers, Alex and Ronald.
Visitation today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Charles B. Gracie
84, Sydney Mines
Charles Benjamin Gracie, 84, a resident of Shore Road, Sydney Mines, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Alder Point, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Ida (Devoe) Gracie.
Charlie worked as a taxi driver with Blue and White Taxi in North Sydney for over 50 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney.
Surviving are three daughters, Anne (Mrs. Murray Sampson), North Sydney, Sharon (Mrs. Alfred Sampson), at home, Jacinta, Sydney Mines; two sons, Peter, North Sydney and Lloyd (Rebecca), North Sydney; three brothers, Stan, Florence, Joe, Sydney Mines, and Earl, Alder Point; two sisters, Hazel (Mrs. Burns Young), Florence, and Helen (Mrs. John MacDonald), North Sydney; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by his wife, the former Rose Beaton, a daughter, Gloria, six brothers, Hubert, Vincent, Theodore, Harold, Billy and James, six sisters, Mary, Adele, Ida, Laura, Lillian and Gladys.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday from St. Joseph Church in North Sydney with Rev. Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial to follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Bras d’Or.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church Improvement Fund, North Sydney.
James Bonnar
95, Sydney Mines
James Alfred Bonnar, 95, of 2 Devoe St., Sydney Mines, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Daniel and Levina (Bonner) Bonnar.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and was a retired coal miners with 45 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; daughter, Brenda (Mrs. Jack Billard), George’s River; son, Freeman (Margie), Sydney Mines; brother, Alex (Barbara) Bonnar, Sydney Mines; grandchildren, Mary, Angela and Anita and great-grandchildren, Stacy, Shaun, Jamie and James, the light of his life for the past 18 months.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Maggie, sisters, Mary Scullen, Jessie Bonnar, Sarah Vickers and Louise Prince; brothers, George, Daniel and Wendell.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ken MacRae officiating, assisted by Rev. Ian MacLeod. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests, donations to the Paraplegic Association or the Nova Scotia Lung Association.
Wesley Goerge Pye
47, Sydney Mines
Wesley George Pye, 47, of 8 Arthur Cres., Sydney Mines, passed away suddenly Thursday, Jan. 18, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born at Sydney Mines, he was the son of Charles and Dorothy (MacDougall) Pye of Sydney Mines.
He was a member of Trinity Anglican Church, Sydney Mines. Wesley worked for Devco for the past 24 years at the Prince Mine, Point Aconi. He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking and spending time with his family at his summer home in New Campbellton. Wesley was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife of 23 years, the former Alice Dawe; two daughters, Wendy (John), Sydney Mines, and Joanna, at home; son, Wesley, at home; four sisters, Charlene (Noel) Lannon, Corinne (Paul) Griffin, Angela (Greg) Knott, all of Lower Sackville, N.S., and Valerie (Frank) Kozera, Carp, Ont. He is also survived by grandson, Dion, the pride and joy of his life.
Wes will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.
Predeceased by an infant son, Charles Eric and his only brother, Eric Pye.
Visitation for the late Mr. Pye will be held Saturday, Jan. 20, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. at the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Trinity Anglican Church, Rev. Brenda Drake-MacDonald officiating. Burial in the spring at Brookside Cemetery.
