Thomas Gregory Hall
77, Sydney Mines
Thomas Gregory Hall, 77, a resident of 40 Church St., Sydney Mines, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (MacConville) Hall.
He was employed with the Cape Breton Development Corp. for 43 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Sydney Mines.
Tommy served on the board of directors of the Northside Association for Community Living for many years. He also enjoyed union politics, serving at various positions on the executive.
He is survived by eight daughters, Bernadette (Mrs. Harold Schofield), Sydney Mines, Patrice (Mrs. Alexander MacKeigan), Sydney Mines, Catherine (Mrs. John MacArthur), Sydney Mines, Theresa Ann (Mrs. David Stewart), Fredericton, Clare (Mrs. Rene Fraser), Sydney Mines, Rose (Rizzie (Mrs. Corrie Stewart), Sydney Mines, Maureen Hall (Joe Boutilier), Bras d’Or, and Edna (Mrs. Wayne MacDonald), Sydney Mines; four sons, Gregory, Gerald, Patrick (Pamela), with whom he resided, and John Wilson.
He is also survived by five brothers, Bill, New Brunswick, Frank, Dartmouth, Phonse, Ontario, Cliff, Sydney Mines, and Jimmy, Sydney; three sisters, Mary (Mrs. Vince Marinelli), Sydney Mines, Kate (Mrs. Harry MacDowell), Ontario, and Marguerite, Halifax; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was predeceased by his wife, Roseann, a son, John Pius, and a brother, Patrick.
Tommy was a faithful servant of his church, serving as an altar server at funeral masses, and also as an Eucharistic minister for many years.
Visitation Wednesday 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in G.R. Francis and Son Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. The funeral will take place Friday 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines, Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northside Association for Community Living, the Canadian Diabetes Society, or to a charity of one’s choice.
Charles A. Hennessey
52, Sydney Mines
Charles A. Hennessey, 52, of 60 Crescent St., Sydney Mines, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of the late Pius Joseph (Sadie MacLean) Hennessey.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Sydney Mines. He was well known for his handy work.
He is survived by sisters, Helen (Mrs. Ken Matheson), Sydney Mines, with whom he resided, Christine (Mrs. Russell Bateman), North Sydney, Sarah Ann (Walsh), North Sydney, Lorraine (Mrs. John Lewis), Ontario, Bernadette Hennessey, Sydney; brothers, Pius (Daisey), North Sydney, Stan (Jenny), Sydney Mines, Richard, North Sydney, Tom, North Sydney, Edward, North Sydney, Cecil, at home, Sydney Mines; a number of nieces and nephews and a very special pet, Muffy.
He was predeceased by a sister, Theresa, brothers, Pat and Adrian in infancy.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday), 7-9 p.m. and Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the G.R. Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Sydney Mines.

Bruce Blanchard Goodwin
54, Sydney Mines
Mr. Bruce Blanchard Goodwin, 54, Brooklynn Avenue, Sydney Mines, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was the son of Bruce Goodwin and the late Margaret (MacKeigan) Goodwin.
He was an adherent of the Clyde Avenue Baptist Church and was a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He was also employed for a time at the Princess Mine.
He is survived by his sister, Beverly (Thomas) Campbell, Millville; brother, Frederick, Sydney; and his half-brother, William MacKeigan, Toronto.
He was predeceased by half-brother, Sidney and half-sister, Patricia.
Visitation will be in the Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home today from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Clyde Avenue Baptist Church, with Rev. Allison MacLean officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Tobin Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Clyde Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund or to the charity of choice.
Philip T. Gilbert
50, Sydney Mines
Philip Thomas Gilbert, 50, a resident of 23 George St., Sydney Mines, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, he was a son of Mr. Wilson Gilbert of Sydney Mines and the late Annie (Coakley) Gilbert.
He was employed with General Motors of Canada in St. Catharines, Ont., for 20 years. He was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines. He was an ardent Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
Surviving besides his father, are his wife, Greta (Whitty) Gilbert; two daughters, Denise and Jennifer, grandson, Devon, all at home; special nephew, Kevin; brother, Joseph (Jerry), Sydney Mines; two sisters, Cathy, St. Catharines, Ont., and Sharon (Mrs. Donnie MacNeil), Bras d’Or; two nephews and four nieces.
Besides his mother he was predeceased by niece, Cindy.
Visitation today (Friday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass Saturday 2 p.m. from St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton.
Catherine Aldric Mitchelitis
78, Sydney Mines
Catherine Aldric (Harrietha) Mitchelitis, 78, of 26 Demarco St., Sydney Mines, passed away Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Catherine (MacDonald) Harrietha.
She was a member of St. Pius X Parish, Sydney Mines, and a member of the parish CWL. She was a member of the Mack’s Bowling Team, a member of Branch 8 Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Sydney Mines Legion Ladies Dart League.
She is survived by sons, Joseph (Lois) and Michael (Doreen), both of Sydney Mines; daughters, Elizabeth (Paul) Stadnyk, Winnipeg, and Julie (Greg) LeForte, Glace Bay and eight grandchildren, Paul and Anthony, Lori and Wanda, Craig and Anthony, Greg and Nicole and three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brett and Kendrick. Also surviving are her brothers, Joseph (Sonny) and Tom, both in Ontario and her sister, Jackey Stubbert, Southside Boularderie; seven nieces and 10 nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Anthony (Mitch) Mitchelitis, her infant son, Anthony, brother, Michael and niece, Ginny Harrietha.
She will be greatly missed by all.
The family will receive friends at G.R. Francis Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church with Rev. Tony MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Malcolm Nickerson
80, Sydney Mines
Malcolm Nickerson, 80, a resident of Shore Road, Sydney Mines, and formerly of Saint John, N.B., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born in Saint John, N.B., he was a son of the late Leland W. and Gladys (Beveridge) Nickerson.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Canadian Navy. He worked throughout his life as an insurance broker.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving are his wife, Constance (Ellis) Nickerson; a daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Joe Salter), Sydney Mines; two sons, Peter and Robert, both of Saint John, N.B.; six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Constance and Doris.
Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service Friday 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Archdeacon Reg MacDonald officiating. Burial to take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
