William Patrick Virture
80, Dominion
William Patrick Virtue, 80, of 448 Mitchell Ave., Dominion, passed away Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Denny, Sterlingshire, Scotland, he was the son of the late William and Christina (Higgins) Virtue.
Mr. Virtue was a member of St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion. He was a former employee with the Cape Breton Development Corp., starting at the age of 15 years and retiring in 1970 from No. 26 Colliery. In earlier years he served with the Canadian Army and was once employed with Sydney Steel Corp. He will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends.
He is survived by three daughters, Vivian (Mrs. Peter Cooke), Gardiner Mines, Patricia “Tish” (Mrs. Dan MacInnis), Pictou, and Cindy (Mrs. Darren Bruckschwaiger), Dominion; one sister, Mrs. Mary Margaret MacLean, Dominion; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Stella Campbell.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his wife, the former Rita Vivian Murphy; and a brother James, in infancy.
Visitation will be in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, today (Monday) from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 11 a.m. from St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion, with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Memorials in Mr. Virtue’s memory may be made to a favourite charity.
Angus Alexander Steele
84, Dominion
Angus Alexander Steele, 84, of Kings Road, Dominion, died peacefully at home, Sunday, April 8, 2001.
Born in Beechmont, Cape Breton, he was a son of the late Michael Steele and Mary Ann Sutherland, of Dominion.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Bridgeport.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Graham); daughters, Mary, Alice (Danny), both of Glace Bay, Theresa, Calgary; sons, Michael (Mary), John (Sonya), both of Dominion, William and Graham, both of Glace Bay.
He is survived by three brothers, Dan and Joe, in Boston, U.S.A., Dr. Bernie, Halifax; sisters, Mae McVeigh, Gen (John) Gromack, both of Dominion, Theresa (Bill) Gouthro, Glace Bay, Sr. Florence Steele, CSM, Antigonish; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by infant son, James Bernard; one brother, Father Harvey Steele; and his sister, Evelyn McKinnon.
Angus served with the Canadian Armed Forces in the Second World War and for many years operated a grocery store and laundromat in Dominion. He was co-owner of Riverside Cleaning Centre in Sydney River.
No visitation by request.
Funeral mass will take place at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating.

Vince ‘Ozark’ Gouthro
74, Dominion
Joseph Vincent Gouthro, born April 8, 1926, of 100 Commercial St., Dominion, passed away quietly at home with family and friends at his side on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2000.
Born in Dominion, he was a son of the late John and Elizabeth (MacNeil) Gouthro.
He was a lifelong member of St. Eugene’s Parish. He worked at several occupations during his working life. He served as police chief for the Town of Dominion and was a retired member of the Dominion Volunteer Fire Department.
He was also a co-founder of the Dominion Shamrock Club. He was an avid bridge player and a past member of the Cape Breton Bridge Club. He was an associate member of Branch No. 78 of the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a long-standing member of the Lingan Golf and Country Club. He was a noted baseball player in the old Cape Breton Colliery League. He served on the Board of Directors of St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Glace Bay Co-Op and was active in the Credit Union Movement.
He is survived by his wife, Monica ‘Mon’ Donovan; daughters, Lynn Tuttle, Dartmouth, Carole (Ross) MacIntyre, Port Hawkesbury, Catherine Howes, Orillia, Judy (Bob) Miltimore, Oakville, Kelly Dillon, Dartmouth; sons, Vincent (Sandi), Alberta, Dale (Sheila), Halifax, Bruce and Joel, Dominion, Stephen (Dale), Dartmouth, Tommy, Barrie, Anthony (Sandra), Mississauga; 16 grandchildren and one great-greatgranddaughter; many nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by sisters, Theresa Campbell, Toronto, Olive Shaw, Fredericton, Cecilia (Mrs. Joseph MacIntyre) and Lorna (Mrs. Ronnie MacDonald), both of Dominion.
He was predeceased by brothers, Matthias and John Gregory and a sister, Mary (Dolly) Walker.
Visitation will be in Curry Funeral Home Ltd., 775 Main St., Glace Bay today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Eugene’s Church, Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. James Oliver officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.

Rose Ella MacDonald
92, Dominion
On Nov. 3, 2000, the soul of Rose Ella MacDonald, 92, of 383 Kings Rd., Dominion, passed on to her eternal home with Jesus. Rose Ella was the daughter of the late Dan J. and Christine (MacGillivary) MacDonald, of Neville Street, Dominion. Rose was well-loved by her sister, Margaret, with whom she resided. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish and a member of the CWL and the senior choir. She worked at St. Marthaıs Hospital, Antigonish for 17 years in the dietary department. She loved and was loved by her co-workers. She is survived by her sisters, Margaret Morrison, Dominion, Cecilia McNulty, Saint John, N.B., Rita MacDonald, Dartmouth, N.S.; brothers, Joseph and Gregory, both of Ontario. She is also survived by nieces, Evelyn Morrison and Marge Gouthro; nephews, Greg, Harold, Raymond, Daniel and Robert; several nieces and nephews throughout Canada. She was predeceased by sisters, Edna Doucette and Katie McNabb, brothers, Jim, Gordon and Leo. Rose loved the Gaelic language and all things related to her Scottish heritage. We will miss her greatly, but we will always celebrate the fact that God placed her in our lives and she now lives with Him. Visitation for the late Rose Ella MacDonald will be held Saturday, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Martha Delores Hogan
56, Dominion
Martha Delores Hogan, 56, of 37 Corbett St., Dominion, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Roderick and Rosella (MacKenzie) McNeil.
She was a member of St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion. Delores was an avid bingo and scrabble player.
She will be sadly missed by her husband, Thomas; children, Charlene (Eric) Butts, Ontario, Linda (Perry) Dennis, Belleville and Thomas (Jamie) Hogan, at home; grandchildren, Daniel and Thomas Butts; sisters, Evelyn Harrington, Ontario, Helen Doyle, New Waterford; brother, Myles McNeil, Glace Bay.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth McNeil.
Visitation for the late Mrs. Hogan will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Eugene’s Church, Dominion with Fr. Jim Oliver officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Nelson Holmes Wadden
82, Dominion
Nelson Holmes Wadden, 82, of 43 Duggan St., Dominion, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 7, 2000, at the Glace Bay Healthcare Complex.
Born in Wadden’s Cove, he was the son of the late John and Sarah (Beck) Wadden.
He was a member of Saint Eugene’s Church, Dominion. Nelson was a fisherman for most of his adult life. Nelson enjoyed woodworking and playing the fiddle as hobbies. He was a veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian legion, Branch No. 78, Dominion.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Theresa Petrie and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Mary, Selina, Katie, Ethel and Catherine in infancy, brothers, Andrew, Johnnie, James, Ernie and Eddy.

Viola Isabel Matheson
89, Dominion
Mrs. Viola Isabel Matheson, 89, of 77 Neville St., Dominion, passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex, surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Angeline (Burton) Phillips.
She was a devoted member and Sunday school teacher of Chalmers United Church, Dominion. Viola was a former employee with General Instruments of Glace Bay. Having a generous and loving spirit, Viola lived her life with an open heart and home to all. She was a very devoted and dearly beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
She will be sadly missed by her four daughters, Lois (Steve) Kosick, Glace Bay, Verna (Bill) McDonald, Gardiner Mines, Angie Sharpe, Dominion, and Sheila (Dennis) Darling, New Waterford; four sons, Earl (Sandra), Toronto, Brian (Karrie), Middle Sackville, N.S., Gary (Linda), Glace Bay, and Neil (Bev), Campbell River, B.C.; special sisters, Emma Gillis and Eunice Brown; special grandson, Neil; special great-grandson, Kalvein; 20 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Daniel; son, Daniel Jr. (D.J.); sisters, Ethel and Louise; and a brother, Clifton (Kip).
Visitation for the late Mrs. Matheson was Sunday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be today (Monday) 2 p.m. from Chalmers United Church, Dominion, with Rev. Bill Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Anne E. (Donovan) MacNeil
48, Mass. / Dominion
Anne E. (Donovan) MacNeil, 48, who died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, in Taunton, Mass., was a native of Dominion, N.S. She resided on Villa Nova until she moved to the United States in 1957.
Word of her passing was received by her sister, Mrs. Diane (Donovan) MacLean, Mitchell Avenue, Dominion.
