MURNAGHAN, Sister Elizabeth (Mary Patricia)
85, died in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII on February 10, 2009. Born in Charlottetown, P.E.I., she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Mary Matilda (MacDonald) Murnaghan. She entered the Sisters of Charity in Halifax in 1947 and made her Religious Profession in 1950. Sister Elizabeth taught school for 28 years in Jamaica, New York, Halifax, Vancouver, B.C., Edmonton, Alta., Montreal, Que., and Bougainville, Que. She moved back to Halifax and worked in the Congregational office, along with doing volunteer pastoral work. Sister Elizabeth retired to the Mount in 1999. She is survived by brother, Frank, Orleans, Ont., and sister, Joan (Robert) Kenny, Stanford, Conn., USA, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Loyola, Hubert; sisters, Mary Bowlan, Theresa Walsh and Sister Bernadette, Sister of Charity. The body will be in Caritas Residence with visitation, Sunday, February 15, 3-7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Chapel, Caritas Residence. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville.
MERCER, Lillian
Died February 9, 2009. She was a daughter of the late George and Martha (Haddad) Shebib. She is survived by sons, Robert (Susan), Earl (Lois); Brian (Cathy); daughters, Lillian (James), Gwen (Harvey), Shirley (Major), Inez, Darlene (Parker), Eva (Sam); 27 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, Earl; brothers, Mosie, Alec, Davie, Louis; sisters, Laura, Alice, Mamie, Rosie, Adele, Eva. Visitation today 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral 10 a.m., Friday in St. Theresa's Church. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery.
MacNEIL, Betty Jean
Died Tuesday, February 10, 2009. She was a daughter of the late Thomas and Florence (Anderson) Courtney. Survived by her only son, Joseph (Neldie), Glace Bay; daughters, Donna (Paul), Irene, Karen (Wayne), Lynda (Robert); grandchildren, Shalene, Brittany, Greg, Jessica, Tyler, Miranda, Kelsey, Logan; partner, Don Brushett; brother, Claude (Vera); sisters, Freda, Nina. Predeceased by husband, Earl; sister, Cedella. Visitation was held yesterday 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home. Funeral 11 a.m., Thursday, February 12, in St. John's Church. Interment at a later date.
POTTER, Clyde Allison
Born September 12, 1924. It is with great sadness we lost Clyde on February 4, 2009, in Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital in Oakville, Ont. Clyde was predeceased by his loving wife of 61 years, Dorothy, and his son, Gary. Clyde was the only son of the late Fred and Florence Potter, Upper Clements, Annapolis Co. Clyde and his family left Nova Scotia in 1966, and lived in Waterdown and Oakville, Ont. He will be missed by his family, daughters, Carol Potter, Digby; Pattie DeAdder, Oakville, Ont.; sons, Stan, Waterdown, Ont.; Vince, Mississauga, Ont.; Rodger, Surrey, B.C.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Doris Harry, Evelyn Ross, Phyllis (Jack) Moorehouse, all of Kingston. Clyde was a veteran of the Second World War and part of the Greatest Generation. Viewing was held Friday, February 6, 2-4 p.m. and funeral service was held February 7, at 11 a.m. in the chapel in Ward's Funeral Home. Clyde was laid to rest by his wife's side. "A big man with an even bigger heart."
MINARD (Snow), Doris Mae
Port Lorne, passed away in her 86th year, Sunday, February 8, 2009, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. She was born in Ecum Secum. Doris was a loving wife and mother and also an avid bingo and card player. Doris is survived by her husband, Newton; son-in-law, Paul (Anita) Leslie; granddaughters, Cheryl (Sam Gibson); Marsha (Mark Wilson); Wendy (Robson Carkner) and great-grandchildren, Kirk and Rachel Gibson, all of Ontario; brother, Graham (Helen) Pace, Halifax, and stepson, Paul (Elizabeth) White, Litchfield. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Everett Moody; second husband, Wilbert White and daughter, Carole Margaret-Ann Leslie. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation at Doris' request. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, February 21, in Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448, Father Fred Hinxman officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown, Annapolis Co. following the service. Donations in memory may be made to Fairview Cemetery or a charity of choice.
ANTHONY, Phyllis Marguerite
93, of Charleston, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 9th, 2009, in Queens Manor, Liverpool. Born in Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Boardman and Frances (Anthony) Shupe. Phyllis took great interest and was active in her community. She was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Charleston Fire Department and co-owned, along with her late husband Lee, a corner store in Charleston for 36 years. Phyllis loved her family and her many friends. She is survived by daughters, Margo Zwicker, Goldie (William) Schnare; son, Merrill (Frances), all of Charleston; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; sister, Alene Seaman, of Liverpool. She was predeceased by her husband, Lee; sister, Deane; brothers, Eugene and Earl. A funeral service will be held Friday, February 13th, at 2 p.m. from Charleston Baptist Church, Rev. Jennifer Garbin officiating. Burial will be in New Charleston Community Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Charleston Baptist Church.
WILLIAMS, Margaret Anne
92, Sydney River, died Monday, February 9, 2009, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Daughter of the late Allan and Rachel McCormick. Surviving are daughters, Mary, Lorraine, Sheila, Edna, Peggy, Georgie, Sharyn; 19 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Catherine, Mary Jane, Sally; brother, Dan Joe; nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband, Edward; infant son, Robert Allan; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation Thursday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel, funeral mass Friday, 2:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Fatima church.
FLECKNEY, Dorothy Madeline "Dolly"
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother, a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, in Halifax on February 10, 2009. She was born in Halifax on June 1, 1920, to the late Hillary and Violet (Stafford) Little. Mom was a member of St. Agnes Parish for more than 70 years. Mom devoted her life whole heartedly to loving her family and her late husband and soul mate. Mom was a kind, forgiving, compassionate woman who loved us and her grandchildren with all her heart. Great sadness came with the loss of her husband and we take comfort in knowing she is with him again. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel "Albert" Fleckney; a son in infancy and granddaughter, Melanie Naegele. Left to grieve are her children, daughter, Mary Ann, (Guenter) Naegele, Lower Sackville; daughter, Donna, (Darrell) Daley, Timberlea; son, Albert and his companion, Anne Leblanc, East Uniacke; grandchildren, Heidi and Jessica Naegele, Ryan and Melissa Daley; brothers, Bill (Theresa) Little, Stan Little, Junior (Phyllis) Little, as well as her sisters who were her best friends, Violet (Joe) Murphy and Barbara Robichaud; many nieces and nephews including Mary Ann Stuart whom she shared a special bond. A special thank you to the staff of Melville Lodge, especially those who gave her that extra attention she needed, you know who you are. Also a special thanks to her "Angel" Shirley Demone. We will be forever grateful. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home. No visitation by request of the family. HARRIS (Wolfraim), Helen Lorraine
It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Lorraine (Wolfraim) Harris announces her peaceful passing on February 7, 2009, surrounded by her loving family and friends, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Wilfred, Ont., April 18, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Hamlet and Ruth (Keane) Wolfraim. Helen is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Bill; sons, Jeff (Pat), Mike (Irene) and Tim (Cathy); brother, Harry; sisters, Anne (Harvey) and Ruth (Gerard); grandchildren, Tara, Jeffrey, Stephanie, Kelly, Megan, Jenna, Patricia and Christine; great-grandchildren, Jack and Aiden; several nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents, Helen was predeceased by her much loved sisters-in-law, May and Kitty and brother-in-law, Rex. Her family and friends fondly remember their Helen as a truly tender and loving woman who brought joy and happiness to all those who surrounded her, even to the very last days of her life. She will be sadly missed by all who dearly loved her. A never wavering positive attitude towards life was developed in her early days as an elementary school teacher in a spartan, one room school house near Lindsay, Ont., followed by dedicated service to A.E. Lepage in Toronto and the Federal government (Statistics Canada) in Ottawa. Her retirement years were devoted to her awe-inspiring backyard garden that she lovingly created, coaxed and nurtured into a work of magnificent beauty. Helen was also an enthusiastic tennis player and long-time member of the March Tennis Club, Kanata, Ont., and St. George's Tennis Club, Dartmouth. She was honoured by the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation for many years of volunteer service. A truly beautiful and kind woman; she provided a template to her three sons of how life should be led. They, in every way, will carry on her life example by honouring and cherishing her memory for family generations to come. Helen was an inspiration to us all, and if we can emulate in just a few small ways the values she instilled in us as we carry on through this journey we call life, then her legacy will live on. May you rest in peace forever our beautiful Helen; beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. The Harris family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Stavros Savvopoulos and the caring staff of 4 West and 3 East, Dartmouth General Hospital and to Gail McLauchlan (Helen's very close and loving friend)for providing exceptionally compassionate care to Helen throughout her stay. At Bill and Helen's request there will be no visitation nor funeral service at this time. Celebrations of Helen's life will be held at a later date. VanTASSELL, Patsy Louise
57, Digby, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, in QEII Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, with loving family by her side. Patsy faced her long struggle over health issues with faith, strength, courage and dignity. On Tuesday, a new angel danced in heaven. Born in Digby on April 21, 1951, she was a daughter of Jean (Gidney) Horner and the late Frederick Horner. Patsy leaves to cherish her memories mother, Jean; husband, Dale; daughter, Annette (Paul); sister, Carla (Bob) Larramore; brother, Frederick (Debbie) Horner; grandchildren (so special to her), Katelyn and Logan; beloved sister-in-law, Bonnie VanTassell, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, February 13, in Digby Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m., with Rev. Donald Robertson officiating. Everyone is invited to a reception in the church hall following the service. A private interment will be held at a later date following cremation. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Patsy's memory be made to the Kidney Foundation or the Digby Baptist Church. SALTER, Penny Frances
48, of Windsor Forks, Hants Co., passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2009, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, with her family by her side. Penny was born on March 24, 1960, in Windsor, Hants Co. and was a daughter of the late Owen and Rhoda (Cole) Palmer. Penny was a former employee of the Canadian Coast Guard. Surviving are her husband, Kelly; sisters, Andrea (Tom) Wilson, Falmouth; Cheryl Palmer, Windsor Forks; Rhonda (Darrell) Cochrane, Ellershouse; Jean (Bruce) Hall, Windsor Forks. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 14, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, 194 King Street, Windsor, with the Rev. Tom Henderson officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Penny may be made to the SPCA or to a charity of one's choice.
