Surviving are mother, Sandra Howie; brother, Clinton Porter; nephew, Brandon, Glace Bay; other siblings, Raymond Cormier, Shereen and Stephanie King; nieces, Sydney and Charllie Cormier; nephew, Riley Cormier; son, Brayden. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay, Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will be at a later date. HENNESSEY, Jennie
71, Sydney Mines. Jennie, who resided in Miner's Memorial Manor, passed away on Monday, February 9, 2009, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Dorothy (Greenwall) Ferguson. She was a member of St. Pius X Parish in Sydney Mines. Jennie was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, with a heart of gold whose home was open to all. She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Brenda (Maurice) Goguen, Winnipeg, Man.; sons, Stanley, North Sydney; Blair, Dartmouth, and Michael (Laura), North Sydney. She is also survived by sisters, Helen (James) Shaw, Margaret (John) MacLean, Sydney Mines; Florence (Morris) Harvey, Kentville; Betty Jean Ferguson, British Columbia; Colleen Rose, Sydney and brothers, George (Audrey), North Sydney; James, Glace Bay; Earl (Judy), Newfoundland; John and Kenny (Rita), British Columbia, and David, Ontario. Also left to mourn are grandchildren, Jennifer, Jonathon, Mitchell, Blake, Matthew, Joshua, Aiden, Lucas and great-grandson, Kolby. Besides her husband, Stanley, she was predeceased by brothers, Wilfred and Robert, and by sisters, Shirley and Annie Ruth. Visitation for the late Jennie Hennessey will take place today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Fillmore and Whitman Funeral Home, 10 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Pius X Church with Father J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place in the spring in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Transition House, Every Women's Center, or to a charity of choice.
OAKLEY, Helen Gladys
Passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2009, in the VG Site, QEII. Born in Halifax on November 30, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Edwin and Marie Rowe. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Leo Elmer, and their children, Lorraine (Branko) Vuletin, Scarborough, Ont.; Leo (Charlotte), Dartmouth; Elaine, Calgary, Alta.; Linda (Creighton/Sonny) Sanford, Cheverie; Sharon Saulnier, Spryfield; Kathy (Glane Gorveatt), Prospect, and Susan (Terry) Meade, Goose Bay, N.L. She is also survived by sister, Doris McLean; 21 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Helen was a "people person", had a special fondness for children and animals, and loved getting into the woods to go fishing or into the family car for long drives to the country, complete with picnic lunches and roadside tea. She held a number of jobs, her years with Sears Canada having been her favourite. She was predeceased by siblings, Haven, Marie, Edwin (Junior) and Nettie; grandson, Jimmie Creamer, and son-in-law, Peter Saulnier. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 13, in St. Michael's Church, Spryfield, at 11 a.m., followed by a brief reception in the church, then interment at Oakridge Memory Gardens, in Sackville. 61, East Tracadie, Antigonish Co., died Tuesday, February 10, 2009, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, she was a daughter of Inger (¯rnbo) and the late Ejner Melbye. Mimi was a long-time employee of Canada Post. She worked as Post Master in Monastery, Superintendent in Toronto, Ont., and then Area Manager in New Glasgow. She was a long-time member of Danish Lutheran Church in Toronto. She was deeply devoted to her family and loved traveling and living life to its fullest. She is survived by her husband, James Anthony; daughters, Kirsten and Keri, both of Toronto, and April, Springfield, Mo.; granddaughter, Sophia Johnson; and sisters, Charlotte McKendrick, Omemee, Ont., and Susanne Savary, Peterborough, Ont. She was predeceased by her sister, Jeanette Andersen. Visitation today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish. Funeral service will be held in C.L. SLAUNWHITE, Wesley Steven "Midge"
73, Timberlea. Surrounded by his family, it is with very heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear, treasured father, grandfather, brother, uncle, great uncle and friend, on February 10, 2009, in the VG Site, QEII, Palliative Care Unit, where he was so tenderly cared for by the most amazing staff, for which we are forever grateful. He was a son of the late Wesley Sr. and Ethel Slaunwhite. Midge worked as a carpenter and freight handler, all his life and was a member of the Carpenter's Union and Longshoreman's Union for over 40 years. Midge was a gentle loving man to all he knew. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He was a loyal Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs fan. He was a member of St. Paul's Anglican Parish, of Terence Bay. He looked forward to weekly bingo and card games. He is survived by daughters, Venita Rodrigue (Garry), Loretta (Charles) Maynard: grandson, Nick; granddaughter, Christina "Weazel"; brothers, Harris (Shirley), Wilbert (companion, Joyce), Harvey (Jeanette), Granville (Donna), Wallace (Beverley); sisters, Julia, Veronica (Kenneth), Glenna (Billy); special friend, Ruddis. Born in Falmouth, he passed away peacefully on February 9, 2009, in the presence of his family, at the age of 68. Ron was predeceased by his mother, Mabel; father, Don; brother, Jackie; granddaughter, Melissa. He is survived by his wife, Judy; son, Bill; daughter, Donna (Michael) and granddaughter, Abby. Also survived by his brothers, David (Darlene), Lloy (Bev), Doug (Ena), Terry (Karen), Paul (Connie) and his sisters, Shirley (the late Bruce) and Donna (Ron), and sister-in-law, Mae. THOMPSON, Hilary
65, North Alton, Kings Co., passed away at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Born in Yorkshire, England, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Ena (Ironmonger) Allen. She is survived by her loving husband, Raymond; her sons, Gareth (Lisa), Dauphin, Man.; Gawen (Sarah), Toronto. Ont.; daughter, Katharine (Brian), Markham, Ont.; grandchildren, Liam, Claire, Owen and Camryn. Hilary was a dedicated teacher, a wonderful partner and a loving mother. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Annapolis Valley Funeral Home, 34 Coldbrook Village Park Dr., Coldbrook. No visitation by family request. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 14, in St. James Anglican Church, Kentville, Rev. Archdeacon Lynn Uzans officiating. CAMERON, Cristina Mary
April 21, 1973- February 5, 2009. It is with great sadness that our family announces the sudden death of Cristina Cameron. Only 35, Cristina was the adored wife of Darcy Day; beloved daughter of Owen Cameron and Betty Cameron (Ferguson); much-loved sister and best friend of Lynne Kelly (Cameron); cherished friend and sister in-law to Travis Kelly, and dearest aunt of Ethan and Reese, who affectionately called her "Tee Tee". Having traveled and lived all over the world, Cristina was known for her love of life, her sense of adventure and her determination to live life to the fullest. She loved immersing herself in new cultures and her open heart and loving nature earned her friends wherever she went. She loved the outdoors and was famous for lounging by the pool or beach on hot sunny days with a cool drink and a good book. A fantastic cook and baker, she enjoyed being in the kitchen and showed her love and nurturing side by fixing snacks and meals for everyone and serving them with a smile. Her sense of humour was infectious and she was always ready with a quip or funny story. Cristina attended Acadia University and then continued to the University of Windsor to obtain her B.Ed. An inspirational teacher, her love of learning and children was evident each day. At the time of her passing, she taught fourth grade at the American International school in Costa Rica and was deeply loved and appreciated by both staff and students. She was predeceased by grandparents, Gerald and Mabel Ferguson and Alec and Mabel Cameron; she will be lovingly remembered by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Our world is a little darker now with her light extinguished, and she will be sadly missed by all whose lives she touched. Arrangements are under the care and direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Rd., Spryfield (477-5601), where visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 14, at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. SMALL, (Martin), Barbara Dorothy
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our mother, Barbara Dorothy Small (Martin). Barbara passed away peacefully and with grace, Tuesday, February 10, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. Barbara was born in Halifax, August 29, 1930, a daughter of the late George and Grace Martin (Bowser). Barbara worked at Simpsons for over 30 years and took away lifelong friendships from her time there. Later in life she became "Nanny" to a special bunch of children during her time as a caregiver in her home. Her purpose in life was to be there for others and she dedicated her time supporting friends and family. She loved reading, music, following the Mooseheads and meeting up with friends at Tim Horton's. Her pancakes and famous tea biscuits will be missed by all that had the pleasure of sharing them. She is predeceased by her husband, Arthur; brother, Thomas and is survived by her children, David (Beverly) Small, Robert (Bettyann) Small, Annemarie (Watkins), and Nancy (Glen) Holmes; her brothers, Basil, David, Patrick and Michael Martin; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family would like to send thanks to the nurses at the VG Site, QEII whose special care eased her passing. Services to be held in Saint Lawrence Church (Dutch Village Rd.) 10 a.m., Saturday, February 14th. No visitation by request. (Cremation has taken place). HARVEY, Mabel Aileen
95, Windsor, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born on June 10, 1913, in McKay Section, Hants Co., she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Zephina (McKay) Robinson. Mabel retired in 1978 after 44 years working in the office of Nova Scotia Textiles, Windsor. She was a member of the Windsor United Church; Leila Rebekah Lodge No. 59; Windsor Gliders Club, and the Newport Jolly Seniors, she also enjoyed gardening, travelling and dancing. She is survived by her sister, Jean Lamb, Halifax; sister-in-law, Mildred Robinson, Halifax; nephews, Richard (Carol) Robinson, Halifax; David Robinson, Halifax; Glenn (Elizabeth) Robinson, Windsor; nieces, Eunice (Robinson) Myers, Kerrville, Tex., USA; June (Donald) Artz, Enfield; Patricia (Allan) Snow, Halifax; several great-nieces and great-nephews along with great great-nieces and great great-nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, R. Reginald Harvey (February 23, 2005); brothers, Ralph Robinson and Wilfred Robinson; nephew, Donald Robinson. Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. today in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King St., Windsor. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 13, in the Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Bill Gibson officiating.
