MURPHY, Vera
Of Saint John, N.B., and formerly of Halifax, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Vera was born in Mushaboom, Halifax Co. in 1919, and moved to Saint John, N.B. several years ago to be with her family. Vera was formerly employed at Victoria Hall in Halifax. She was predeceased by her parents, Ervin and Emily (Boutilier) Winters, as well as her husband, Vincent Murphy. Vera is survived by daughter, Lillian Whittaker (Stephen) of Saint John, N.B., and several grandchildren and great- grandchildren. As per Vera's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Bay View Select Community Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Rd., Saint John, NB (506-634-7425).
NICKERSON, Irene Mary
91, passed away on March 8, 2009, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth, she was a daughter of the late Monde E. Hubbard and Addie (Robicheau) Hubbard. Irene worked for Sobeys for many years prior to her retirement. She was a member of Zion United Baptist Church and a member of Senior Citizens and Disabled. Surviving are daughter, Carol Faye Blankeney, Nine Mile River; sons, George Robert (Joann), Kingston; Beryl Allan, Yarmouth; Peter Michael (Sandy), Yarmouth; sister, Letha Crosby, South Ohio, Yarmouth Co.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Karl; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Christian; sisters, Olive Meakin; Frances Wallace; several brothers. Remains are resting in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where visiting hours will take place Tuesday, March 10 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place Wednesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. in Zion United Baptist Church, Rev. Brian Wallace officiating. Spring interment to take place in Chebogue Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to The Gideons International or Canadian Cancer Society.
MASON, Rosella "Rose"
89, R K MacDonald Nursing Home, Antigonish and formerly of Country Harbour Lake, Guysborough Co., passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2009, in the home. Born in Springfield, Antigonish Co., she was a daughter of the late Henry Stewart and Catherine Ann (Rose) MacGregor. Rose was a faithful member of Cross Roads United Baptist Church and Sunset Seniors Club, Country Harbour. She was a loving mother, grandmother and caregiver throughout her life. She especially enjoyed baking and knitting. She will be sadly missed by daughters, Zela (Fred) Hemeon, Lower Sackville; Marion (Gary) Kaiser, Country Harbour Lake; son, Raymond (Charlene) Mason, West River, Antigonish Co.; grandchildren, Crystal (Scott) Logan; Millie Hemeon; Kristy and Ryan Mason; Melanie and Hollie Kaiser; great-granddaughter,Kendra Logan; sisters, Ina Corkum, Halifax; Dama Mason, Oakville, Ont.; brother, Arthur (Marsha) MacGregor, Burtt's Corner, N.B.; brother-in-law, Peter MacIntosh, Argyle, Guysborough Co.; several nieces and nephews. GRANT, Edward Earl "Ed"
Carrolls Corner, born in Halifax on March 7, 1931, passed away March 6, 2009, at home with his family by his side after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was a beloved husband, father and Grampie. Among his many accomplishments he owned and operated Rockingham Home Bakery Ltd. on the Bedford Hwy. where he met his loving wife, Wandalee of 27 years. He also drove for Casino Taxi for a number of years, leading him into retirement at 71, where he enjoyed puttering with his "ranch down over the hill", looking at the river and visiting with family and friends. A strong family man, he especially enjoyed Sunday dinners with grandsons, Ty-James Edward and Ethan, and talking about the newest on the way. Surviving are his devoted wife, Wandalee (Hannam); children, Brenda (Les), Scott (Tiffany), Cory (Amanda). Also Sheila, Mark, Kevin, Gary, Harold, Owen and John; sister, Lorraine Doucette, and brother, Gary. His memory will be forever alive in hearts of all the people he touched. He was predeceased by his parents, Bernard Frederick, Hilda May (Munro) and 11 siblings. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Ettinger Funeral Home. Visitation 6-8 p.m. today with funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, both in Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie, Rev. Angus R. MacDonald officiating. Following the service there will be a reception in Carrolls Corner Recreation Centre. MacLEOD, Kathleen Donelda "Kaye"
Salt Springs, formerly of Halifax, passed away March 6, 2009, in her home. Born in Antigonish she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Annie (MacDonald) Martin. Kaye grew up in Lourdes where she was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. She later moved to Ontario where she was married and then returned to Halifax where she and her husband, Don started their own business, MacLeod's Lawn Equipment Ltd. Kaye worked at the family business for a number of years with her husband and daughter, Kathy. Surviving are her daughter, Kathleen "Kathy" MacLeod, Salt Springs; grandsons, Donald Gould, Edmonton, Alta.; Andrew Gould, Halifax; sister, Virginia Melanson, Moncton, N.B.; partner, Gerald Reaume, Peterborough, Ont. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald; brothers, John and Leo. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation at the request of the deceased. A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations in her memory may be made to Aberdeen Palliative Care Society. Arrangements are under the direction of H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. WERTHEIMER (Spence), Marjorie
Died February 26, 2009, in Michigan, U.S.A. She was preceded in death by parents, Ernest and Daisy (Taylor) Spence and husband, Dr. Frederick Wertheimer. She is survived by her brother, "Ernie" (Joan) Spence; her children, David (Carmen), Karen (Robert) Dickey, Eric (Cheryl), four grandchildren and many relatives in Nova Scotia. Interment in Milton, Mass., March 20, 2009.
RICHARDS, Gary Stewart
61, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on March 6, 2009. Gary was a well-known broadcaster at CKBW for over twenty five years, later becoming self-employed as a contract bookkeeper and computer trainer. He was a devoted member of Pleasantville Baptist Church, volunteering much of his time to church activities. He was the youngest son of the late Clyde and Olive Richards. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Susan (Joudrey); children, Amie Haughn (Chad), Sarah Arenburg (Matthew); brothers, David (Marion) and Earle (Carolyn); granddaughter, Zoe Haughn. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of R.A. Corkum Funeral Home, Wileville. Visitation will be held in Pleasantville Baptist Church, today from 7-9 p.m. A tribute to Gary will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the church, Rev. Philip Locke officiating. STEVENS, Vivian Kathleen
89, of Martin's Brook, passed away on Friday, March 6, 2009, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Martin's Point, she was a daughter of the late Venning and Daisy (Sawler) Rafuse. Vivian was a tireless worker for the family farm and was very proud of her entrepreneurial spirit in running the farm. She was a member of Calvary Temple Pentecostal Church, Mahone Bay and the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her love of life, family, friends, and the community at large were so important to her. Vivian's quiet courage, strength of spirit, and sense of humour will be carried forward by all those who knew and loved her. She is survived by sons, Royal (Karen) Stevens, and Stewart Stevens, both of Martins Brook; daughter-in-law, Doris Stevens, Clearland; grandchildren, Graham (Valerie), Shelley (Eric), Barry (Mary), Jeffrey, Holly (Karl), Sara (David), Matthew; great-grandchildren, Shawn, James, Alexander, Noah, Olivia, Nicholas and Shauday. Vivian was predeceased by her husband, Spencer; sons, Donald, Ronald; brother, John; twin sisters, Leslie, Margaret, and grandson, Jonathan. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. WIERBISKI, Therese Margaret
February 16, 1926 - March 7, 2009, passed away peacefully in Sacred Heart Community Health Centre in Chéticamp after a long battle following open-heart surgery. During the past few months, her life was filled with many challenges but she faced them with courage and faith, always surrounded by her family, friends and so many others who helped her through this difficult time. Therese was the daughter of the late Pat (ˆ Joe) and Minnie Aucoin of Saint Joseph-du-Moine. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Wierbiski. She leaves behind brothers and sisters, Philias (Laura) Aucoin, Montréal; Gérard (Therese) Aucoin, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine; Elizabeth Poirier, Waltham; Lucy May Aucoin, Waltham; Hermine Chiasson, Oakville, Ont.; Celina Aucoin, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine; Stella (Théobert) Chiasson, Saint-Joseph-du-Moine and Catherine (Joseph), Saint-Joseph-du-Moine. As well, she leaves many special nieces and nephews who will cherish fond memories of her. Some especially remember the excitement from visits with her and Walter, wonderful times spent together. For over 50 years, Therese worked in the Sydney area for Dr. Clem Young and his wife Margaret as their housekeeper. She helped raise their family and became like a second mother to their five children. She leaves behind her extended family, Margaret, Sydney; Paul (Donna), Ontario; Brian, Halifax; David, Sydney; and Catherine, Halifax. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Wierbiski; brothers, Freddie Aucoin and Léo Aucoin. Therese was known for her kindness and her love of life - joie de vivre. Upon retirement and selling her house in Sydney, she moved back home and resided in the Bellevue Apartments in Grand-étang. Her door was always open for family and friends. Still very active during her golden years, she especially enjoyed her daily walks, driving her car, taking her sisters out for afternoon strolls and stopping by for tea at Tim Horton's. She was a member of St. Joseph's Parish in Saint-Joseph-du-Moine, the St. Joseph Church Choir, Les Dames de Sainte Anne and the Nouveaux Horizons St. Joseph (Seniors Club). Visitation will be today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Chéticamp Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be held Tuesday, March 10, at 3:00 p.m. in St. Joseph Church in Saint-Joseph-du-Moine. Father Peter LeBlanc officiating. Donations can be made to the North Inverness Palliative Care Society (Chéticamp).
LANGILLE, Eva
Of Halifax, formerly of New Minas, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 8, 2009, in Northwood Center, Halifax. Born in Bredbury, Cheshire, England, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Annie (Ashmore) Roberts. In 1946, on her 21st birthday, she arrived in Halifax as a War Bride on the Queen Mary, docking at Pier 21. She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her son, John (Bev), Halifax. Eva was also delighted and entertained by the visits, pictures and stories of John and Bev's grandchildren, Kiersten, Madison, Jessica, Thomas and Spencer. She was predeceased by her husband, Earl; sister, Hilda; brother-in-law, Fred; nephew, Ken. She will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, in Greenwich United Church, Greenwich, Kings Co., Rev. Robyn Brown-Hewitt officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral service and interment will be held at a later date.
