Rev. Trevor Anthony Phillips

PHILLIPS, Rev. Trevor Anthony - Passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at the age of 67. Born in Jamaica in 1941, he was predeceased by parents, Leonard and Gwendolyn Phillips. He is survived by loving wife of 38 years, Olive; daughter, Sharon and son-in-law Marc; grandchildren, Sydnie and Joshua; brother, Keith; sisters, Cindy, Yvonne, Marion; many nieces and nephews. He was a well-known, respected figure in the community as a reverend, teacher, counselor and friend, touching the lives of everyone he met with his compassion and generosity. A graduate of Union Theological Seminary in Kingston, Jamaica, he pastored at Mount Zion United Church, Rosehall, before migrating to Canada. He was a United Church Minister, Prince Edward Island 1969-1972, Halifax-St. Paul's United Church 1973-1981, and pastored at the Sambro-Parkhill-Jollymore Pastoral Charge 1981-2008. He was a graduate of University of Prince Edward Island, B.Sc. (1972), B.Ed. Dalhousie University (1975), Master's degree in Educational Psychology (1980) and Counseling, St. Mary's (1983). He was a committed member of the Black Educators Association, a well-loved teacher at B.C. Silver, Cunard Junior High, Guidance Counselor at Nelson Wynder and Bell Park Academic Centre. He was a member of the Crisis Intervention Team for the District School Board, presenter at several national and provincial conferences, delivering workshops on multiculturalism, human rights, motivation, communication, curriculum reform and discipline strategies. Trevor was an avid sportsman, passionate about dominoes, cricket, jogging and badminton. Also, a member of Dalplex "Silver Tigers." Trevor will be truly missed and will remain in our hearts forever. He will be remembered for his strong faith in God, kind heart and his abundance of love. Visitation will take place 2-4, 7-9 p.m., Friday, April 18, in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in Bethany United Church, 7171 Clinton Ave. The Phillips family wish to thank everyone who rallied and supported Trevor with love and encouragement. Mrs. Maryam Rowhani-Rezvani

ROWHANI-REZVANI, Maryam - Daughter of Mirza Aga Jan Farsigou and Nane Jan, both profound believers in the then nascent Baha'i faith. Maryam was born in 1913 in Hamadan, Iran, and passed on, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on April 12, 2008, surrounded by her loving friends and family. Maryam was married to Mousah Rowhani in 1932. She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Margaret Ram and Rouhi Vladi, both residing in Canada; as well as her sons, Dr. Houshang Rowhani and Dr. Behrouz Rowhani, both in Vienna, Austria; her grandchildren, Mrs. Neda Habibi, Ottawa; Mrs. Shiva Yan, China; Vargha Ram, Ottawa; Dr. Marcel Rowhani, Vienna; Pouneh Natalie Vladi, Munich, Germany; also has five great-grandchildren, Sherwin, Charlene, Amilia, Anisa and Audrey. Maryam Rowhani was a steadfast believer in the Baha'i faith, the second generation in her family of believers in the principle of Bah‡'u'll‡h: "The earth is but one country and mankind its citizens". Maryam was a brave, courageous, hardworking, knowledgeable and liberated woman, with a heart of gold; gracious, generous, humble and selfless; always ready to sacrifice her needs for those of her children, and to serve her faith and community. She was a true humanitarian, living her life with utmost dignity and integrity. She faced her many challenges with courage, humour and faith. Maryam worked as a chartered accountant for 44 years in Iran, at a time when women did not customarily hold positions of high responsibility. A true handmaiden of God, Maryam will be greatly missed and remembered in our hearts with gratitude, love and affection. We are forever proud of her and thankful for having had her in our lives. The family thanks those involved in her care in the last period of her earthly life, friends and caregivers who came from diverse backgrounds and beliefs. A memorial and prayer service in honour of her memory will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 19. Interment will follow at the same address. All in attendance will be welcome at the reception immediately after. Maryam Rowhani and many of her immediate family had to leave Iran because of the persecution of the Baha'i faith minority by the Iranian government, a persecution that systematically continues to this day. In lieu of flowers, the family requests your prayers for freedom of worship for all Baha'i children, women and men in Iran, who are suffering the burden of persecution.

Cheryl Steeves 59, of Moncton passed away Sunday, April 13th, 2008.
Born in Moncton, N.B, she was the daughter of the late Bert and Hazel Mullins. Cheryl is survived by her two daughters; Shelley Steeves and Jaimie MacVicar (Joe) both of Moncton, two grandchildren; Jessica Steeves and Emma MacVicar, who she loved dearly, two brothers Wayne Mullins (Mariete) and Norman Mullins (Eleanor) both of Moncton and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a sister Shirley Wilson. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 18th, from 10:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 am, at Fair Haven Funeral Home, Pastor Gordon James officiating. TAYLOR, Elizabeth Ann "Doll" - 87, Halifax, passed away April 13, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born on June 13, 1920, in Belleoram, N.L., she was a daughter of the late John and Rebecca Poole. Aunt Doll, as she was known to many, was an avid bingo player, enjoyed knitting and getting together with friends and family. She will be greatly missed by her sons, John Robert "Bob" (Faye), Henry (Janet); daughter, Rebecca Maloney; brother, Matthew Poole; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; dear cousins, Lenie Gould and Julie Baker; close friend, Lillian Gallant, and all her friends at Gordon B. Isnor Manor. She was predeceased by husband, Henry William Taylor; brother, John; sisters, Mary and Hazel. Mrs. Glady Helena Sanford

SANFORD, Glady Helena - 85, passed away peacefully in Glades Nursing Home on April 12, 2008. She was wife to the late Perry (Ted) Sanford and cherished mother of Linda and husband Richard Nickerson of Dartmouth. Glady was predeceased by her sister, Edith Brennan, and brother, Bernie Jackson, and is survived by her sister, Mrs. Dora Tilly. Glady worked at the Hudson's Bay Company and was an active member of the Armdale Fairview Lions Club. Glady had a wonderful sense of humour and had a great passion for knitting, baking and crafts. Her greatest love was her grandchildren, Richard (wife Beverly), David (wife Mandi) and Jana. She was a loving great-grandnan to Kaitlin, Amanda, William, Joshua and Ruby. Glady has spent the last few years enjoying her life with best friend Ivan MacPherson and family Margaret and George. Her love extends to all her nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at the Glades Nursing Home for giving Glady such good care and love. Funeral service will be held by Pastors Wayne and Sandra Gardner on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Reception to follow. SMILEY, Michael — 64, Beaver Bank, passed away January 29, 2010, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Port Dufferin, he was a son of the late William and Sadie (Whitman) Smiley. He was employed with Atlantic Wholesalers for over 30 years, retiring in 2007. He was a talented musician, who loved to play the dobro, guitar, banjo, mandolin and the fiddle. He will be missed by many of his music and jam buddies. He was a past master of the former Dufferin Masonic Lodge, No. 89, Port Dufferin. He enjoyed reading and listening to old country music. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, the former Catherine Barkhouse; son, Michael David, Beaver Bank; sister, Patsy (Sterling) Burgoyne, Port Dufferin; Carol (Bob) Colvert, Halifax; great-aunt, Audrey MacFarlane, Dartmouth; many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sister, Doris Hallett, and a sister in infancy; brother, Harold. Cremation to take place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 125 Sackville Dr. No visitation by request. CROSS, James Francis "John" — 90, Eastern Passage, passed away January 29, 2010, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Alfred and Geraldine (Vaughan) Cross. Before moving back to Nova Scotia in 2005, John lived in Florida most of his life, where he was employed as an electrician for 19 years with Carter and Smith Company. One of the things that brought great pleasure to John was line dancing with his wife Jenny, where they won several awards and merits. John is survived by brother, Fred (Vera); sisters, Ruth (Gill) Morrison, Carol Crockett; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Jenny "Mickey" (Daw); brothers, Arthur, Alfred, Gerald, George; sister, Helen. Private family burial will take place at a later date in the Gate of Heaven cemetery. Mr. Fred Poulter

POULTER, Fred - 80, Fall River, passed away April 5, 2008, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. Born in Ardsley, Yorkshire, Fred joined the British Forces in 1944 at the age of 17. He served in Belfast 1947-1951, Blandford 1952-1957, Colchester 1957-1960, Kenya 1960-1964, saw action in Kuwait in 1961, and then served in Aden from 1964-1965 and Germany from 1965-1973. He received a Queen's Commission in 1967. After retiring from the British Forces, Fred worked for Canadian Forces Base Lahr in Germany from 1973 until retirement in 1993 as Material Control Officer before moving to Nova Scotia. He was a great animal lover who enjoyed being with his dogs and was often known to rescue little critters in need. He is survived by his loving wife, Irmgard; brother, Frank, England; sister, Irene, England; son, Steve, Australia; daughter, Samantha, Fall River; grandchildren, Amanda, Australia; Daniel, Australia, and Skye, Fall River. He will also be missed by his dogs, Timmy, Cutler and Cody. Cremation has taken place. No funeral by his request. Memorial donations may be made to the SPCA or to Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada.
