Phyllis Phillips
1918-2013
It is with deep sadness that we must announce the passing of Phyllis B. Phillips, age 94, of Amherst, NS. Phyllis passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Gables Lodge.
Born in Tidnish Bridge, NS, she was the daughter of the late George and Beryl (Jackson) MacDonald.
Phyllis received her high school education at the Spring Street Academy and took the commercial course at St. Charles Commercial School. She attended Mount Allison University in Sackville, N.B. where she received her B.A. degree, from there she entered the Westchester State Teachers College in U.S.A. and obtained her teaching certificate. She lived in Drexel Hill, Penn. for many years before returning to Amherst in 1983 following her husband's death. She was a member of the Amherst Golden Years Society and was previously active in their bowling league. She was active with the IODE Thrift Shop.
She is survived by daughters Beryl Marshall (Alan) of Bussy St. George, France and Harriet Clawson (Robert) of Cochranville, Penn., U.S.A.; granddaughter Hilary Braley (David), Michigan.
She was predeceased by her husband Harry.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). At the request of the family, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
Charles "Buddy" Murphy
1953-2013
Charles "Buddy" Murphy 59,of Joggins, passed away on Thursday January 24, 2013 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre with his loving family by his side. Born in Joggins he was a son of the late Clarence "Father" & Dorothy (Farris) Murphy.
Buddy worked as a metal worker for Parrsboro Metal Fabricators. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening and spending time with his family.
Buddy will be sadly missed by his loving wife, the former Marcilla Gale; daughters, Natasha Gale of Truro, NS; son, Colin Gale (Brittni Hurley) of Moncton, NB; sister, Cheryl Ann O'Brien (Mike) of AB,brothers, Wyman "Bubbles" of AB, William of Montreal PQ; Grandson Branden Gale.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister Janet Murphy
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St. Amherst, NS, (902-667-8777). No visiting by request. A memorial service will be held at Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, Amherst, NS on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. Burial to take place at a later date in the River Hebert Cemetery.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or the V.O.N. Cumberland Branch.
Stanley D. MacKenzie
1945-2013
Stanley D. MacKenzie, 67 years of age, of Amherst passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in Amherst he was a son of the late Stanley & Rita (Richard) MacKenzie.
Stanley owned and operated Stan's Taxi for many years. He loved spending time at the beach, having bon fire's and cook outs. He loved spending time with his family and he loved his grandchildren most of all.
Stanley will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Sandra Bacon; daughters, Tammy Bacon of Amherst, Lourena Silvie of Amherst; sons, David and Peter; Marian Eastwick (Frank) of Anagance, NB; brother, Brian (Beth) of Warren; nine grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his granddaughter Jenelle Silvie.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St. Amherst, N.S. (667-8777). No visitation or service by request.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Zena Mary Sorge
1919-2013
SORGE, Zena Mary - Passed away January 29, 2013 at Gables Nursing Home, Amherst, NS. Born April 27, 1919 in Joggins, NS, she was a daughter of the late Moses Abraham and Rose Mary (Weatherbee) Sorge.
During her early life she attended school at West Highlands School and Amherst Academy. In the early 50's she traveled with her mother to her mother's family home near Damascus Syria, and spent five and a half years there. While there, she worked in the British Embassy. On return to Canada, she worked for a time as Private Secretary to the General Manager at Robb Engineering, and was a member of the Lady Tweedsmuir Club in Amherst. In 1962 she accepted a position as Private Secretary to the Vice President and General Manager at the newly constructed Nova Scotia Pulp facility in Port Hawkesbury. She remained in that position until her retirement.
She loved her life and her many friends in Port Hawkesbury, and was very involved in the community. She was an avid golfer and curler, was actively involved in her church, Holy Trinity Anglican, and for many years served as Chair of the Festival of the Strait Queen's Pageant.
She is survived by Sister In Law Ruth Sorge, Amherst; nieces Norma Jean Sidner of Illinois, USA; Vicki (Jerry) Randall, Kathy (Paul) Calder, of Amherst; and Wendy Michael of Halifax nephews Nicholas John Sorge, London, England; David Sorge, Kentucky, USA; Paul (Jane) Michael, and Philip (Cordis) Michael, Charlottetown, PEI as well as numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dear friend Martha Huston of Amherst.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers Abraham, Albert, Nicholas and Sister in Law Mary; sister Helen J. Michael and Bother in Law Charlie; brother, Norman, of Pennsylvania, USA, and Sister In Law, Effie; and nephew Philip Sorge. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Her remains have been cremated. Visitation will be held Friday, February 1, 2012 from 7 to 9 pm at Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St, Amherst (902-667-8777). Funeal Service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2013 at 2 pm at Christ Church Anglican, Victoria St., Amherst; with burial following in Christ Church Cemetery at West Amherst in the Spring.

Hibbert "Hibby" W. Oulton
1919-2013
Hibbert W. Oulton, 93 years of age, of Northport, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Lorneville he was a son of the late David & Etta (Goodwin) Oulton.
Hibby worked as a mechanic all of his life. He loved antique cars and took great pride refurbishing all models. His pride and joy was showing off his Buick & Dodge. Hibbert loved Old Time and Bluegrass music. In his free time he loved to play the accordion. He enjoyed hunting and being in the woods.
He is survived by his wife, the former Doreen Greeno, daughter, Carolyn Ann Brine (Christopher) of Calgary; son, Rodger (Sylvia) of Northport, granddaughter, Amanda Lowther (Scott) of Saint John, great grandson, Bailey; three step grandsons, Keith, Chris & Brad; seven step great grandchildren and special nephew, Wilson Moore.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Susie; brothers, James "Jimmy", Ernest "Ernie"
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St. Amherst, NS (667-8777). The family will receive visitors at the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 from 7-9 p.m and Thursday Feb 7 from 1pm - 2pm. A memorial service will be held at the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home on Thursday, February 7, at 2 p.m. with Ruth Gamble DLM officiating. Burial will take place in the Lorneville United Church Cemetery in the spring.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Lorneville United church or the Sunrise Senior Citizens.
Margaret V. Harrison
1913-2013
It is with deep sadness that we must announce the passing of Margaret Veronica Harrison, age 99, of Amherst. Margaret passed away peacefully at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Tuesday, February 5, 2013.
Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Merton and Julia (O'Hearon) Harrison.
Margaret was a member of the Holy Family Parish. She worked as a stenographer for Douglas & Rogers for many years.
The last surviving member of her family, she will be sadly missed by several nieces, nephews and many close friends.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sisters, Novelle Allain, and Mary Harrison; brothers, John, Gerald, Lorne, Telfer and Norbert.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St, Amherst, NS (902-667-8777). There will be no visiting hours. Funeral mass will be celebrated at the Holy Family Parish Church on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 10 am, Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Charles-Nativity Cemetery in the spring.

Gary W. Fagan
1952-2013
It is with sadness that we must announce the passing of Gary W. Fagan, age 60 of Amherst. Gary passed away peacefully at the Cumbeland Regional Health Care Center on Thursday, February 7, 2013.
Born in Sackville, NB, he was a son of the late Marc. J. and Edna (Comeau) Fagan.
Gary was raised in Amherst and attended Saint Charles School. He graduated from Amherst Regional High School and went on to attend Mount Allison University where he graduated with a B.A. and a B.ED. with honours. He taught school in New Brunswick until 1986, returning to Amherst and spent the last 21 years teaching at Parrsboro Regional High School, retiring in 2007 Gary was a devoted member of the Holy Family Parish Church where he was a member of the 9 AM choir. He performed in various plays with the Tantramar Theater and enjoyed bowling, good music and movies. He was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.
He will be dearly missed by his Aunts Lorraine Melanson, Lydia Lirette and Viola Corbett, all of Amherst and Uncle John Comeau, Quebec and Emile Melanson, Amherst, as well as many cousins too numerous to mention.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated from the Holy Family Parish Church on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 11 am, Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Burial will take place in the St Charles-Nativity Cemetery in the spring.

Greta Melanson
1918-2013
It is with deep sadness that we must announce the passing of Greta Pearl Melanson, age 94, of River Hebert. Greta passed away at the Northumberland Hall, Amherst on Thursday, February 7, 2013.
Born in Chignecto, she was a daughter of the late John "Fred" and Charlotte (Berry) McLellan.
Greta worked for many years at the Co-Op in River Hebert. She loved to sew and made over 500 quilts through the years. A loving grandmother, she enjoyed doting on her many grandchildren and great grand children.
She is survived by her daughters: Evelyn (Donald) Willis of Vancouver, BC, Eileen (Gary) Boudreau of River Hebert, NS; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother, Harold "Peg" (Elizabeth) of Lower Cove, NS, several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Basil, son Basil "Sonny"; sisters Vera Hunter and Audrey "Nan" Taylor; brother Charles.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, River Hebert, NS (902-667-8777). In keeping with Greta's wishes there will be no visitation or funeral service. A graveside service will be held at a later time.
