Mr. Warren Scott
1935-2009
Warren Chesley Scott … 73, of Kentville, formerly of White Rock, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville with family at his side. Born in Black River, Kings County, he was a son of the late Ora and Muriel (Forsythe) Scott. He had been employed with Gates and Watson, Welton’s Construction, Laddamers Construction, Steele Construction, Sonny Millett, Clifford Long and Sons, and Tidewaters. He was also self-employed for many years as a mechanic in White Rock. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time at the camp in Dalhousie, working in the woods, mechanics, woodworking, going for drives and quality time with family. He is survived by his former wife, Phyllis; two daughters, Wanda Veinot (Peter Lockhart), Wheatley River, Prince Edward Island; Marie (Jim) Farris, Gaspereau; a son, Garth (Cathy), New Minas; a sister, Viola (Carl) Peck, White Rock; a brother, Albert (Judy), Wolfville; six grandchildren, Bradley, Natasha, Matthew, Draper, Jamie and Jason; three great grandchildren, Brody, Justin and Katelyn; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five sisters, Marjorie Allen, Jean Young, Nina Mason, June Scott and Ethel Hiltz; a brother, Bernard and a granddaughter, Adrienne. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. Burial will take place in the Black River Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Black River Baptist Church, the Black River Community Centre, or the Canadian Cancer Society. Mrs. Jean McDougall
1926-2009
Jean Mary McDougall – of Kentville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at Grand View Manor, Berwick on January 30, 2009. Born in Chapleau, Ontario on January 27, 1926, she was the younger daughter of the late William J. and Margaret Frances (Reed) McKay. She was educated at Havergal Ladies College in Toronto, Ontario and was an accomplished equestrian in her youth. Later, she and her husband, Donald McDougall owned and operated McDougall's Drugstores in Kentville, New Minas and Chester Basin for many years. She was an active member of the community, serving as a board member at Bonny Lea Farm, the Chester Municipal Heritage Society and the Chester Playhouse. She was also on the board of directors for the Chester Basin Business Association and was a charter member of the Chester Basin Lions Club. She was past president of the P.C. Women's Association and was a long time member of the Nova Scotia Pharmaceutical Association. She is survived by brother, Robert R. McKay, Middleton; daughters, Margaret (Bill) McGillis, Corbeil, Ontario; Catherine (Paul) MacKay, Lake George; Dawne Leslie McDougall, Westville; sons, Kenneth (Robin) Pineo, Chester and William McDougall, Lake George; four grandchildren, Jothan, Lyndsay, Robyn and Lee, and one great granddaughter, Emma. She was predeceased by her sister, Margaret (Marnie) Elizabeth McKay, first husband K.L. Pineo, and her second husband of over thirty years, Donald McDougall. Cremation has taken place under the direction of White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation at Jean's request. Due to pending inclement weather, the memorial service and reception have been postponed and will now be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Pastor Brian Wheaton officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, Parish of St. James, Kentville. Mrs. Virginia Bilgen
1920-2009
Virginia Lola Bilgen … 88, of Wedgewood House, Kentville, passed away Saturday, January 31, 2009 at home. Born in New Ross, she was a daughter of the late Emmerson and Winnie (Meister) Redden. She had been employed throughout her career as a clerk, secretary, receptionist and switchboard operator. She worked with E. R. Boggs Grocery Store, Kentville and later moved to Sudbury, Hamilton, Buffalo and Royal Oak, Michigan. She retired from Gallagher-Kaiser Corporation where she was a valued employee for 20 years. She affiliated with many churches throughout her travels and was a member of the New Minas Baptist Church. She is survived by three sisters, Rose Doyle, South Alton; Helen (Jim) Adie, Comox, British Columbia; Birdie Moores, Halifax; four brothers, Robert (Gloria) and Hughie (Carol), both of South Alton; Harold (Clara), Cambridge; Emery, Kentville; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard “Dick”; four sisters, Rita Bowman, Gladys Hunt, Hazel Lake and Mary Schurman; five brothers, Basil, Clyde, Terrence, Earl and Chesley. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009 in the New Minas Baptist Church, Reverend Doctor Robert Knowles officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the New Minas Baptist Church, the Alzheimer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. Mrs. Myra Prentice
1908-2009
Myra Agnes Prentice – 100, of Wolfville, passed away Monday, February 2, 2009 in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Prince William, New Brunswick, she was a daughter of the late Murray and Emma Jane (Hayward) Long. She dedicated her life to her family, her church and her home. She had been employed teaching in the public school system in New Brunswick and took part in many elections acting as a District Returning Officer. She was a member of First Baptist Church Halifax, where she had been President and office holder in the Women's Missionary Society, the Women's Auxiliary, Teacher and Superintendent within the Church School and Leader of the Mission Band. She was also Regent of two IODE chapters in Halifax. She is survived by her son, Reverend Doctor Roger Prentice, Wolfville; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Percy Prentice; three sisters, Maude Currie, Ruby Trail and Nellie McCabe. Cremation has taken place under the direction of White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 at First Baptist Church, Halifax, Reverend John Boyd officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery, New Brunswick. Family flowers only by request. Mr. James "Jim" Graves
1925-2009
James George “Jim” Graves … 83, of Kentville, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Kentville, he was a son of the late John W. and Clara (Richardson) Graves. Jim spent his early years with the West Nova Scotia Regiment, stationed in Newfoundland. He then went on to work with the Kentville Electric Commission for the next 45 years as a lineman, until his retirement at the age of 65. Jim spent his spare time woodworking and puttering around the yard. He was an avid reader and was well-known for his story telling and especially his humorous one-liners. Jim always looked forward to visits from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by seven sons, Bill (Sandi) Coldbrook; David (Lynne), New Brunswick; Tony (Chris), Steven (Crystal) and Andy (Charlene), all of Kentville; Adam (Cathy), North Alton; Mark (AnneMarie), Canning; five daughters, Linda (the late John) Burgess and Josie (Norman) Swinamer, both of Kentville; Mary (Charles) Tidswell, Woodstock, Ontario; Barbara (John) Thorne, Seabright, Halifax County; Mona (Owen) Power, Canning; three sisters, Mildred Purchase, Kentville; Shirley (John) Roberts, Scarborough, Ontario; Violet (John) Putio, Fort St. John, British Columbia; 26 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife and soul mate of 62 years, the former Mona Geneva Gee; a son, Peter; four brothers, William, Alfred “Lefty”, John and Arthur; a sister, Annie Bishop; four grandchildren, Cathy, Peter, Shayne and Nicky. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 6, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Robert Billings officiating.
