Mrs. Anna Elizabeth "Betty" Jess
1924-2009
Anna Elizabeth “Betty” Jess - 84, of East Hall’s Harbour, Kings County, formerly of Habitant, Kings County, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2009 at home. Born in Kingston, she was a daughter of the late Robert “Bob” and Gladys (Balcolm) Fitch. Together with her late husband, they operated the family farm in East Hall’s Harbour and later, for a brief period of time, owned and operated the Chip and Dale Restaurant in Canning. She was past president and a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, Habitant Branch No. 73, Canning. She was also past president of the Canning Ladies Progressive Conservative Association. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting ornaments, crafts, crossword puzzles and looking after seniors in her home. She is survived by three daughters, Brenda (Tom) Dewar, Brockville, Ontario; Sandra (Dave) Sweeney, Palm Coast, Florida; Wanda Jess, Wolfville; three sons, Cameron (Linda), East Hall’s Harbour and the British Virgin Islands; Malcolm (Sally), East Hall’s Harbour; Kevin (Sheila), Blomidon; a brother, Eldon (Freda) Fitch, Kingston; 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil; a sister, Edith Rainsforth. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 18, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Doctor Mark Parent officiating. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mrs. Helen Hatt
1930-2009
Helen Mae Hatt – 78, of the Wolfville Nursing Home, formerly of Steam Mill, Kings County, passed away Friday, January 16, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Liverpool, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Nellie (Craig) Slauenwhite. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She was a member of the Pentecostal Assembly of Canada, where she had been active teaching Sunday school for over 30 years and was a member of Kingsway Assembly, Kentville. She enjoyed over 15 summers camping at the Look-Off Campground. She enjoyed life to the fullest and will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by two daughters, Connie (Burton) Coleman, Centreville; Cathy, Lakeville; four sons, Les (Peggy), Kentville; Ivan, Steam Mill; Terry (Mary), Kentville; Ronnie (Cathy), Steam Mill; two sisters, Marion (Wilfred) Benjamin, Aylesford; Verna Davis, Lakeville; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester; a brother, Reverend Clyde Slauenwhite; a grandson, Bradford Hatt. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, January 19, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2009, Reverend Robert Cross officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mrs. Jean Barbara Rose
1934-2009
Jean Barbara “Barb” Rose … 74, of Upper Canard, Kings County, passed away Friday, January 16, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in East Chester, Lunenburg County, she was a daughter of the late George and Grace (Walker) Rafuse. Jean was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend. She had been employed with dietary and food services at the former Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital, Kentville and also taught ceramics from her home. She enjoyed round dancing, square dancing and country music. She also enjoyed camping and family get-togethers. She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Blenus and Sally (Jim) Rose-Minard, both of Canning; a brother, Robert “Bob” (Janice “Jenny”) Rafuse, East Chester; a sister, Donna Anthony, Edmonton, Alberta; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Jamie, Cheryl, Heather, Brandon and Nicholas; two great grandchildren, Iain and Breagh; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George; a sister, Joyce; a grandson, Emmett. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend David Taylor officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Canard Burial Ground, Upper Canard. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.

Mrs. Joyce Bishop
1919-2009
Joyce Violet Bishop … 89, of Kentville. It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our mom, Joyce on Saturday, January 17, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, with her family by her side. Born in Culloden, Digby County, she was a daughter of the late Burton and Sadie (Middleton) Stark. In her younger years, she worked as a nanny in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. She was then employed at the Metropolitan Store in Kentville for a number of years and was also an AVON consultant for 27 years. She was a family orientated lady who loved her late husband, Charlie, her three girls, grandchildren and great grandchildren dearly. She was called “Mom” to many and had a smile wherever she went. She loved to play the odd game of bingo before her illness prevented this and she loved to watch tennis and skating. She was usually seen with her two daughters, Sharon Anne and Debbie shopping and loved her visits to the city with them. She is survived by three daughters, Sheila Ray, Durham, Ontario; Sharon Anne (Mike) Cleveland, New Minas, Kings County; Debbie (John) Garrison, Port Williams, Kings County; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Charlie; three sisters, Mildred, Dorothy and Shirley; four brothers, Sidney, Chester, Fulton and Murray. There will be no visitation, by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend John McNally officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses - Palliative Care or the charity of your choice. Mrs. Agnes "Ness" Blair
1927-2009
Agnes Mary “Ness” Blair … 81, of Canning, Kings County, passed away Monday, February 2, 2009 at home. Born in Arbroath, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late Alf and Peg (Gerrard) Douglas. She is survived by a daughter, Pat (Garry) MacNutt, Canning; a grandson, Michael (Lenore) MacNutt, Halifax; two great granddaughters, Grace and Ava. She was predeceased by her husband, Sam; a granddaughter, Jennifer. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. There will be no funeral service, by request. Burial will take place at a later date in the Habitant Cemetery, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Jennifer MacNutt Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o AVRSB Trust Fund, P. O. Box 340, Berwick, NS B0P 1E0 or the charity of your choice. Mrs. Mary Teal
1922-2009
Mary Teal … 86, of Kentville, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 4, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on November 8, 1922 in Dartmouth, she was a daughter of the late Christopher and Elizabeth (Miles) Bennett, of Dartmouth. She was predeceased by her husband and friend of 63 years, Freeman Teal; brother, George Bennett; older sister, Chrissie MacDonald; infant sister, Dorothy; daughter-in-law, Sharon Teal. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Evangeline Chapter No. 15, Kentville, the New Horizons Club of Kentville, the Valley Cardiac Rehab Society, and the Port Williams United Baptist Church. She was a past member of the Kentville Baptist Church, the Dorcas Society, and a former Sunday school teacher. She was also a former member of St. Eulalie Rebekah Lodge, Kentville and had also been active with the Fairlanes Bowling Coffee League. She volunteered with many organizations and in 1991, received a certificate of appreciation during Volunteer Week. She had been a babysitter for the Kentville Hobby Crafters for many years. She led a full and active life to the end. She loved cards, bingo, shopping, gardening, a good party, people, her family, and animals. In general, she loved life. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and the twinkle in her blue eyes. But she will be especially missed by her family, two daughters, Nora (Bob) Bishop, Kentville; Marie (Jeff) Griffin, Port Williams; two sons, Allan (Marilyn) Teal, Trenton, Ontario; Ted (Jean) Teal, New Minas; grandchildren, Dr. Scott (Christy) Bishop, Toronto; Brian Bishop (Cassie Shaw), Halifax; Tanya (Trevor) Wilson, Milton, Ontario; Craig Teal, Red Deer, Alberta; Paula (Matt) Chapman, Napanee, Ontario; Kevin (Cindy) Teal, Kingston, Kings County; Andy (Jillian) Teal, Guelph, Ontario; Kim (Joel) Sheffield, White Rock, Kings County; Kerianne Teal, Ontario; Steven Teal (Anna Chow), Cambridge, Kings County. She will be missed by 16 great grandchildren, especially her two visitors every week, Keegan and Lindsay. Mary leaves behind a sister, Ella Hobson, Dartmouth and many extended family and friends. An Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, followed by visitation from 7:30-9:00 p.m. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009 in the Port Williams United Baptist Church, Reverend David Ogilvie officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Donations in memory may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star, Evangeline Chapter No. 15, Kentville (Special Project … Marg’s Glad Garden) or the Valley Cardiac Rehab Society.
