Evelyn Trueman
1923-2009
The death of Evelyn Trueman, age 85, of Truemanville, NS, occurred on Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the High Crest Nursing Home, Springhill.

Born in Truemanville, she was a daughter of the late Blair and Vera (Oulton) Chappell.

Evelyn was a member of the Sunrise Trinity United Church and UCW. She was also a member of the Pythian sisters, Elizabeth Temple # 6. A loving and caring person, she was always available to help anyone in need including her family. Evelyn was a talented person, being able to do crafts, knitting, sewing and making numerous wedding cakes for family members.

Evelyn will be sadly missed by her sister, Ruby (Raymond) Brown, Athol; grandson, Keith (Natasha) Trueman, Truemanville whom she enjoyed taking care of as a child; great granddaughter, Etta; daughter-in-law, Sandra Trueman; sisters-in-law, Ruby Trueman, Sarah (Kenny) Atkinson and Opal Chappell; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Carl, Step-son Ralph, a sister, Norma and brothers, Albert and Layton.

Evelyn's remains have been cremated under the direction of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777) from where a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at 11 am, Rev. Philip Read officiating. Burial in the Truemanville Cemetery.

Margaret Edwards
1936-2009

The death of Margaret Edwards, age 72, of Joggins, occurred at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre surrounded by her family.

Born in River Hebert, she was a daughter of the late Leo and Annie (Maloney) Scopie.
Margaret was a hairdresser for many years in Joggins. She loved Bingo and a good game of 45's. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church.

Margaret will be sadly missed by her partner, Vernon Hoeg; sons, Peter (Dawn), Larry (Butch) and Michael (Susan); daughter, Debbie (Bruce) Hebert; 6 grandchildren, Danielle, Tanya (Shaun), Sabrina (Craig), Amanda (Mike), Stacey, Jeremy (Beth); 4 great grandchildren, Taylor, Drake, Kassidy and Kyler; step-children, Gary (Shelley) and Veronica and their families; a sister, Nancy (Archie) Michels; sisters-in-law, Joan Scopie and Mary Phillips; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Richard, grandchildren, Jason and Scotty and brothers, Peter and John and sisters, Dolly and Bella.

Margaret's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, River Hebert, with visitation in River Hebert, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral mass will be held at the St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, Monday, August 17, 2009 at 10 am. Burial in the parish cemetery. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated.

Harold F. Jackson
1928-2009

Jackson, Harold Floyd - 80 years of age, of Amherst passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in North Sydney he was a son of the late Carmel & Jean (MacDonald) Jackson.

An accountant, he worked for the "Council of Maritime Premiers" (MRMS) in Amherst before retiring in 1986. After retiring, he volunteered at St. Charles Church doing the books and was on the Finance Committee. He was an avid sports fan. In his younger years he was involved in golf, baseball, curling and coached minor hockey. Later, he enjoyed hockey and football on television. For many years he played tenor saxophone in the Sackville Citizen's Band and the 8th Canadian Hussars Regimental Band. A music lover, he spent many hours listening to jazz and big band music.

Harold is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former, Isabel Landry; his daughter, Karen Jackson of Halifax; sons, Ronald (Loriann) of Calgary, AB and Kenneth of Singapore; grandaughters Christine & Colleen; sister-in-law, Gloria Jackson of Rexton, NB and brother-in-law, Donald Landry of Port Elgin, NB. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother, Rev. David Jackson.

Harold's remains have been entrusted into the care of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home. 70 Church St., Amherst (902-667-8777) from where visitation will be held Wednesday, August 19 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish Church, Amherst on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 10:30 with Father Vernon Driscoll officiating. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Parkinson Society or the charity of their choice.

Lillian Waugh
1924-2009

AMHERST, NS The death of Lillian Waugh, of Gables Nursing Home, Amherst, occurred on Monday, August 31, 2009 in her 85th year.

Born in Salem, she was a daughter of the late Willis and Blanche (Carter) Waugh. Lillian nursed at the Saint John General ( Regional) Hospital for 38 years, retiring in 1989 and returning to the family home in Salem, NS. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, WMS and a Dominion Life Member of the UBWMU. She was a faithful former member of the Rebekah Lodge, Eastern Star, Pioneer Heritage Club, Oxford and Pythian Sisters of Cedar Temple # 21 and Elizabeth Temple # 6, she was also a member of EL SHEBA # 21. She was an active member of the Travelers Singing Group.

Lillian will be sadly missed by her sister, Emma (Herbert) Boyd, Saint John, NB and several cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Florence.

The remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst (667-8777) from where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at 11 am, Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. Lillian's family will meet their friends and family at a time of visitation Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the funeral home chapel. Pythian Sisters and Nomads will hold memorial services Tuesday at 7 pm. Memorial donations to the LA Animal Shelter or a charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated.

Robert Rhindress
1922-2009

The death of Robert Rhindress, age 87, of Amherst, occurred at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Saturday, Sept 5, 2009, with his family by his side.

Born in Nappan, he was a son of the late Alexander and Caroline (Finnigan) Rhindress
A veteran, he served in the Carlton & York Regiment (Signal Corps), served in England, Italy and Holland during World War II. He was a 66 year member of the Amherst Royal Canadian Legion. Retiring as foreman, he had been employed with Enamel and Heating for 38 years. In his younger years he liked to hunt and fish. A very kind and considerate man who loved his family, and was known to all as a gentle, respectful person who was well read and informed about all current and historical events.

Robert will be sadly missed by his war bride of 67 years, Doris (Kemp); 2 daughters, Sandy (John) Nield, Pugwash, and Donna (Mike Breau) Allen, Point de Bute, NB; a son Larry (Wendy), Wittenburg, NS; a sister, Bernice Chapman, Amherst; a brother, Benjamin (Eleanor), Trenton, ON; 5 precious granddaughters, 9 great grandsons and 1 great granddaughter. His cat Molly will be lost without him. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Gladys and great granddaughter, Alexandra.

Robert's remains have been cremated under the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777) from where a memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 2 pm, Rev. Laura Hunter officiating. Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation Tuesday from 1 pm until the time of the memorial service. Donations to the LA Animal Shelter, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated.

The family extend a heartfelt thanks to Charlene Mountain (caregiver) and the staff of Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, for all their care and compassion.

Gwendolen Bentley
1916-2009

With great sadness we announce the death of Gwendolyn Bentley, age 96, widow of Emerson Bentley, of Amherst, which occurred at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009. A true lady, with the strength of steel and full of grace.

Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Ginnie (Gardiner) Hardie.

Gwen worked as a receptionist at Imperial Optical for a number of years before she became a Data Processing Operator in the County of Cumberland Tax Office, retiring in 1980. She was a member of Trinity St. Stephens United Church, a charter member of the UCW, a member of the WMS and the Lord Amherst Chapter of the I.O.D.E.. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and was an Explorer leader. She was a member and Past Noble Grand of the Miriam Rebekah Lodge #36, a member and Past President of the Past Noble Grand's Club and was Past District Deputy President of the District Association # 11.

Gwen leaves behind a family that dearly loved and admired her and includes, her daughter Lorraine Brooks, Amherst; 2 grandsons, Bruce (Tammy) and Stephen; 3 great grandchildren, Jeffrey, Miranda and Caitlyn; 2 sisters, Ella Purdy, Truro, and Hazel (Myron) Millett of Fredericton, NB; 2 brothers, Banning (Pearl) Hardie, Toronto, ON and Raymond (Shirley) Hardie, Edmonton, AB. She was predeceased by her husband, Emerson, 2 brothers, Gordon and Maxwell and a sister, Leona.

The remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home from where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday, Sept 9, 2009 at 2 pm. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 pm. Donations to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated.

A special thanks to Peter and Kathleen Hardie who have been a comfort and help no words can adequately convey.

Patricia "Pat" Porter
1947-2009

Patricia Ann Porter, age 62, of Amherst, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with Cancer, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Center on Monday, September 28, 2009.

Born in Moncton, NB, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Lily (MacDonald) Pauley.

A caring and terrific person, she always looked forward to family gatherings, going to the cottage and spending time on the beach. She loved her cats and music. She graduated as a mature student in Cosmetology and was a hairdresser for many years.

She will be deeply missed by her sons Stephen, Moncton and Gary, Toronto, former husband Bill Porter, Amherst; sisters, Peggy (David) Long, Sackville, Shirley (Craig) Robichaud, Amherst, brothers Danny (Karen) Allen, Sackville, Stephen, Edmonton, AB, Walter Allen, Sackville; best friend Barb Stewart, Amherst, several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sister May Richards.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 68 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 11 am, Rev. Don Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Warren Cemetery.

Those wishing to make a donation in Pat's memory may do so to the V.O.N., or the L A Animal Shelter.

Mervyn V Weeks
1925-2009

Mervyn V Weeks, age 84, of Amherst, passed away at the Cumberland Regional Heatlh Care Center on Thursday, October 1, 2009.

Born in Amherst Shore, NS, he was a son of the late Walter and Mae (Bell) Weeks .

Mervyn attended and was active with the Trinity St. Stephen's United Church, singing in the choir, participating in the Men's Group, and as treasurer of the Sunday School. He owned and operated Weeks' Market for over 50 years with his brother Gordon. He was a volunteer with the Red Cross.

He will be sadly missed by his wife Lillian (Rafter); daughter Patricia Weeks, Halifax; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Gordon, Robert and sister Marion Murray.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 68 Church St., Amherst (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place from 7 to 9 pm on Friday. The funeral service will take place 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 3, 2009 from the Funeral Home with The Rev. Patti Blundell officiating. Burial will follow in the Amherst Cemetery.

Those wishing to make a donation in Mervyn's memory may do so to the Trinity St. Stephen's United Church or the Canadian Red Cross.
