Edith "Donnie" Edwards
1926-2009
JOGGINS - The death of Edith Donelda "Donnie" Edwards, age 83, occurred at the Gables Lodge, Amherst on Saturday, December 12, 2009.
Born in Chignecto, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Edith (Berry) Smith.
A home body, she was accomplished in the arts of homemaking, being a good wife, an excellent cook and seamstress. She was a member of the Joggins United Church.
Donnie will be sadly missed by her husband, Lionel Edwards; sisters: Blanch Gates of Shediac, NB, Alvina Jollymore (Bill) , Thelma Burbine, Clara White, Fern Burbine (Ronald), Elaine Smith all of River Hebert and Gladys McEachern of Amherst; a brother, Lloyd Smith, Amherst.
Donnie's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777) from where a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 11 am, followed by a reception in the funeral home. A time of visitation will be held on tuesday from 9 am until the time of the funeral at 11. Burial in the River Hebert Cemetery in the spring. Donations to a charity of the donor's choice gratefully accepted.
John "Jack" Garrett
1930-2009
AMHERST, NS The death of John "Jack" Garrett, age 79, of Amherst and formerly of Ottawa, occurred at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Thursday, October 15, 2009.
Born in Salisbury, NB, he was the son of the late Walter and Lulu (Martin) Garrett
A Telecommunications Engineer, he worked with the RCMP in NB and Ottawa for 25 years, retiring in 1990. A ham radio operator his call sign VE1 JK has now gone "Silent Key". He attended Trinity St. Stephen's United Church.
Jack will be sadly missed by his partner, Gerry and her family; and several cousins including George and Shirley Martin and Merna Hoar. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley (Taylor).
Jack's remains have been cremated under the direction of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (902-667-8777). A time of visitation and remembrance will be held at the Furlong Jones Chapel, Church Street, Amherst on Sunday, October 18, 2009 from 1 to 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to your local animal shelter gratefully appreciated.
Joseph "Joey" Goodwin
1962-2009
Joseph "Joey" Goodwin, age 47, passed away at the Halifax Infirmary on Friday, December 4, 2009 after an Industrial Accident.
Born in Amherst, he was a son of Joseph Goodwin and the late Lula (Reid) Goodwin.
Joey was employed with Empire Theaters for over 25 years. Very dedicated to his work, he traveled across Canada building and renovating theaters for Empire. He was well loved by all and made friends in every town he stopped in and his coworkers were like a second family. When home, he enjoyed time on his ATV and his motorcycle. He often spent time at his cottage at the Jackson Point Shore. He was a great fan and collector of John Wayne. Family was always important to him, and he always took time to visit, especially loved spending time with his nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father Joseph of Amherst, he will be sadly missed by his brothers, George (Mary Lou), South Brook, Donnie, Riverview, NB, Gary (Barb), Amherst, Larry, Amherst; sisters, Linda Estabrooks, Amherst, Betty (Ray Roy) Goodwin, Amherst, Cindy (Tim Ross) Goodwin, Maccan; several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, NS (902-667-8777) where visiting hours will take place on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11 am, Pastor Jonathan Cole officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Interment of the ashes will be in the Amherst Cemetery.

Isabella "Isabel" M. McKay
1924-2009
McKay, Isabella "Isabel" M. 85 years of age, of Amherst passed away on Monday, December 14, 2009 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Born in Amherst she was a daughter of the late Bertrum & Winnifred (McCully) McKay.
Isabel loved puzzles, playing cards and being with her family and friends.
Isabel is survived by her son, Richard of Amherst, sister Mildred Nixon and brother Ronald McKay both of Amherst; grandson James (Julie Paris) of Amherst;
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Lena Blakney; brothers Carl & Kenneth.
Isabel's remains have been cremated under the direction of Furlong-Jones Funeral Home (70 Church St. Amherst, NS). No visitation or Funeral by request. Burial will take place in the Amherst Cemetery in the spring.
Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
William Lines
1929-2009
The death of William George "Bill" Lines, age 80, of Nappan, occurred on Saturday, December 26, 2009 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late James William Lines of Islington, Middlesex, Co. England and Jessie (Rogers) Lines of Halifax, NS.
In his late teens to his mid 20's Bill worked at the Amherst Aircraft Plant. In 1956 he moved to Mississauga, ON where he worked at "White Motors" and met his wife, "Alice". In 1971, Bill moved his family back to NS and settled in Nappan. He worked as a carpenter then as a "lead hand" at General Home Systems in Amherst retiring in 1984. A lifelong carpenter, in his retirement he continued to do carpentry jobs for friends and family. Bill was known as a hardworking, honest, plainspoken man who was a homebody. He enjoyed his garden, listening to bluegrass and country music, doing carpentry and playing with his granddaughters.
Bill will be sadly missed by his son, Allan, D.R. Congo; his daughter, Suzanne Jackson, Amherst and 2 granddaughters, Melyssa Jacqueline and Rica Blaiz. He was predeceased by his wife, Doris "Alice" (Welton) (2006); brothers Arnold, Arthur, Robert and Roy, his sister, Marjorie; his half brothers, Ernest, Fred, Harry and Robert and his half sister Elizabeth (Kelligrew).
Bill's remains have been cremated under the direction of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777). A memoial service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 10 am, Archdeacon Glenn Eason officiating. A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home from 9 am until the time of the service on January 6. Donations to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, the Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully appreciated.
Thomas Cornelius "Connie" Rector
1928-2009
The death of Thomas Cornelius "Connie" Rector, age 81, of Amherst, occurred at the Gables Lodge, Amherst on Tuesday, December 29, 2009.
Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Thomas and Clara (MacKinnon) Rector.
Connie managed the Co-Op stores at Amherst, Tatamagouche and Amherst Head for 30 years,and worked with Atlantic Speedy Propane, prior to retirement. He was a avid gardener, cook and in younger years a baseball and hockey player.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Amherst and Knights of Pythias # 11 Amherst.
In 1979 he won the Horseshoe Championship for Ontario.
Connie will be sadly missed by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy (Estabrooks); a son Bruce, at home; a daughter Carol (Bruce) Hoeg, Truro; 1 special granddaughter, Susan (Ken) Rushton, Oxford; 2 great grandchildren, Jennica and Jeremy; 2 sisters, Isabel (Ernest) Bainbridge, Moncton and Carol (Ken) Margenson, Fredericton. He was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Irene and a grandson, Bruce Hoeg.
Connie's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (902-667-8777) from where the funeral service will be held Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 2 pm, Rev. Byron Corkum officiating.
A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3:30 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm.
Burial in the Amherst Cemetery in the spring. Donations to the LA Animal Shelter, Alzheimer's or charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated.
Shirley Hubbard
1935-2009
Shirley K. Hubbard, age 74, of Amherst, passed away peacefully at Gables Lodge on Monday, December 28, 2009.
Born in Amherst, NS, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (McManaman) Gogan.
She was formerly employed with Royal Donut Hole.
She was a member of the Amherst Skating Club.
Shirley will be sadly missed by her son, Jeff (Kathy) Hubbard; daughters, Karla Ogden, Carmen Senecal; 5 grandchildren, Cassandra Hubbard, Sophie and Jesse Ogden, Justin & Corey Senecal; brothers, Richard Gogan, Robert Gogan; sisters, Dorothy Gogan, Norma Maxwell, Betty Douglas and Beverly (Anthony) Atkinson.
She was predeceased by a sister, Margaret and a brother in law Frank Maxwell
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Amherst, where visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009 from 11am to 2pm.
Funeral service will be held from the Furlong Jones Chapel at 2pm Wednesday. with Arch Deacon Glenn Eason officiating.
Burial will take place in the Amherst Cemetery later in the spring.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Canada.
Joan E. Turner
1936-2009
The death of Joan Turner, age 73, of Nappan, occurred on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at home.
Born in Nappan, she was a daughter of the late Hibbert and Maude (Grant) Lawrence.
During her working years, she was employed at various locations in Ontario and Massachusetts as a secretary. She enjoyed card games and volunteered for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Joan will be sadly missed by her husband, Ken; sons, Barry and Tim, both at home.
She was predeceased by brothers, Hibbert and Percy (both in 2009) and Amos, and sisters, Marjorie and Ruth.
Joan's remains have been cremated under the care of the Furlong Jones Funeral Home, (667-8777).
A graveside service will be held in the spring.
