ROUSELL, Tom

Noted local restaurateur, proprietor for many years of the innovative SoHo Kitchen, avid saltwater sailor, bon vivant and raconteur, Tom Roussell, born January 20, 1951 passed away peacefully April 24, 2009 in the VG Site, QEII. Tom's love of good food, wine, conversation and friendship admirably suited him for his vocational path. Born in Burlington, Vi., he was the son of the late Tom Roussell Sr. and Alberta Ramsay. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Roussell. Tom graduated with a degree in History from the University of Massachusetts and embarked at a young age into the world of restaurants. Tom owned, CO-owned or managed restaurants throughout New England including the famed Alberta's in Portland, Me. prior to his relocating to Halifax in 1984. Upon arrival, Tom took a small hole-in-the-wall lunch counter on Granville Street and through the years expanded the restaurant, which was to become more than a restaurant; a meeting house for a wide, diverse group of regulars whose disparate backgrounds were linked through Tom's intellectual pursuits, love of books and humour, a folk art gallery, a performance space, one never knew what would be on the menu at SoHo, but it was always good. Tom touched many hearts and made many, many good friends, all of whom will sadly miss his imaginative culinary skills, camaraderie, warmth and infectious laughter. Tom's gastronomic accomplishments were recognized locally. He catered many film productions around Nova Scotia as well as galas of all sizes and variety. A chance meeting with Rimpoche Trumpa opened Tom's heart to the philosophy of Buddhism, hence leading him to a life of practicing kindness and generosity. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Trish McManus; cousin, Deb Roussell Massachusetts; and 4 very close friends whom he called brothers, Kyle Jaskson Halifax; Michael McTague, California; Bob Marcelli, New York; and Tony Marcelli, Florida. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Shambala Center. Trish and Tom would like to thank all the medical caregivers who assisted Tom throughout his journey over the last five years, especially the nurses on 7A palliative care at the VG Site, QEII. Carol Smiley, thank you. As per Tom's wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial services for Tom and the late Tom Rousell Sr. will be held in St. Columba Chapel, Atlantic School of Theology, May 8, at 2 p.m., Francklyn Street, Halifax.
