COOK, Edna Flora Elizabeth
86, Harbour View Haven, Lunenburg, and formerly of Spectacle Lakes. It is with great sadness that the family announces her passing on Friday, April 24, 2009, in Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care. Edna was born in Halifax, the daughter of the late Julius and Nora (Ernst) Weiss. A faithful member over the years of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Rhodes Corner, Edna had served as a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Ladies Aid, and an active fundraiser at the time when the new church parsonage was built. In her earlier years she worked as a compassionate caregiver at Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg. She was a kind and generous person who gave with her thoughts and deeds and will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Edna is survived by daughter, Janet (Samuel) Weagle, Rhodes Corner; sons, Jack (Diane), Bayport; Gary (Nancy), Lunenburg; Gregory (Cindy Shepherd), Upper Northfield; half-brother, Harry (Leolyn) Walker, Centre; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Roseville; and brother, Murray; and a granddaughter. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. No. 3, Lunenburg, where family and friends are invited to share memories of Edna on Monday, from 7-9 p.m. A funeral service to celebrate Edna's life will be held Tuesday at 11 am. in St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Rhodes Corner, Rev. Mei Sum Lai officiating. Interment will be in St. Matthew's Anglican Cemetery, Upper LaHave. LaPIERRE, Peter Andrew
55, of Eastern Passage, passed away suddenly April 27, 2009, at home. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Eugene and Glen (Sears) LaPierre. Peter was an avid Harley Davison enthusiast, and extremely proud of his Harley. He also completely enjoyed the outdoors, especially boating. He was a self-employed mechanic. He is survived by his daughter, Tammy (Paul) Gorrill, Porters Lake; son, Andrew (Colleen), Porters Lake; fiancée, Cherie Mountain; grandson, Nathan Gorrill, as well as siblings, Eddie (Diane), East Chezzetcook; Gerald (Shirley), Calgary; Danny (Sandra), Edmonton; Tommy (Linda), Gaetz Brook; Diane (Carl) Pettipas, Jeddore; Judy LaPierre, Lawrencetown; Doris (Gordon) Cohoon, Dartmouth; brother-in-law, Fred Wiggington, and special nephew/brother, Eugene "Weege" LaPierre, Cooksbrook. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Katie; sister, Mary; brother, Eugene and stepbrother, Bob. GLAZEBROOK, Sherman James
77, of Cole Harbour, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Born in Eastern Passage, he was a son of the late Stewart and Hilda (White) Glazebrook. In 1956 Sherman went to England to work as a draftsman at the parent plant of Fairey Aviation for one year. While embarking on the Cunard Liner Saxonia for his return home, he happened upon a young lady needing assistance with her luggage. The two quickly realized they had found the love of their lives and upon arriving back in Canada Jacqueline Gray moved to Nova Scotia from her native British Columbia to marry Sherman. They enjoyed over 51 years of marriage. The early employment of Sherman from 1949 to 1967 was as a draftsman at Fairey Aviation, Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia Power Commission and RCAF Gorsebrook. In 1967 he transferred to the Bedford Institute of Oceanography as an oceanographic technician and remained there until retiring as head laboratory technician in 1985. He was well-respected by his supervisors and coworkers at the Institute and enjoyed his work there and the many friends he made. In his own words during his retirement speech:" If you're going to retire it's nice to retire from the best job you ever had". He was an integral part of CHEC, an environmental group that was responsible for the preservation of Cole Harbour in its natural state for generations to come. He loved fishing and hunting, but his favorite pastimes were gardening, studying and enjoying the wildlife of Cole Harbour and enjoying sharing his knowledge of both with others. As well as his wife, Jacqueline; he is survived by his daughters, Maureen (Mike) Dares, Eastern Passage; Sandra (Gary) Glazebrook, Dartmouth and Janet Glazebrook, Cole Harbour, as well as four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Vernon and sisters, Alfreda Sawlor, Doris Morash and Ruth Bates and several nieces and nephews. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Richard Warren for his care, compassion and support of the family and to all the staff of Cole Harbour Family Medicine Centre, the Palliative Care team and the nurses and support staff of the 3rd floor of Dartmouth General Hospital for their kindness. Cremation has taken place. The family will be holding an informal memorial to remember Sherman in Cole Harbour Funeral Home, 1234 Cole Harbour Rd. on Saturday, May 2, from 1-3 p.m. Please come and share your stories and memories with us. SMITHSON, Sidney
Passed away in Welland County General Hospital on April 28, 2009, in his 91st year. He was a loving father of Sandra Montgomery (James), Raymond (Carol) of Falmouth, and Douglas (Nancy), and will be sadly missed by his special friend, Eva Fortier; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepchildren and stepgrandchildren; dear brother of Kenn of Chase, B.C. He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen; second wife, Iris; parents and brother, Ray. Mr. Smithson served overseas in the Second World War, was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 4, Welland and a retired employee of Cyanamid Canada with 44 years of service. The family will receive friends in H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main St., Welland, Ont. on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the Cudney Chapel on Friday, May 1, at 11 a.m., followed by interment in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of choice would be appreciated by the family. There will be a Royal Canadian Legion Service, Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

Died April 27, 2009, a son of the late William and Margaret (Townsend) Burchell, he is survived by sister, Cynthia (Frank); sisters-in-law, Ruth, Rita, Allene, Barbara; special cousin, Greg; many nieces, nephews, great-nephews, Bryson and Kalem. Also predeceased four brothers, twin brother, Roy, Russell, Calvin and Merrill. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J. 85, Shag Harbour, Shelburne Co., passed away on April 27, 2009, at home. Born in Wood's Harbour, he was a son of the late Marion Matheson. He is survived by his wife, the former Ruby Atkinson; sons, Larry (Lillian), Shag Harbour; Fred (Irisbel), Pubnico; Alfred Jr. "Sonny" (Sharon), Truro; daughters, Gloria Jean Banks, Yarmouth; Judy (Michael) Malone, Edmonton, Alta.; Kathy Porter, Yarmouth; brother, Robert, Bear Point; 18 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great great-granddaughter. DOWLING, Carol Edward "Carl"
In his 80th year. It is with great sadness that the family announces his passing on Tuesday, April 28, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Halifax, a son of the late Herbert and Anna (Martell) Dowling. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie (Kline); his brother, Donald; his sisters, Eileen and Valerie (Sampson); his son-in-law, Wayne Ernst. He is survived by his children, David (Gerry), Robert (Paula), Eileen (Ken), Anne-Marie (Paul), Bernard (Marie Josée), Ronald (Bernadette), Carolyn (Steven), Mark, Lawrence (Elaine), Geraldine (Tim), Eric (Monique), Cyril (Melody); 30 grandchildren; sisters, Marie Mombourquette, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; Shirley (Jack) Cummins, Peterborough, Ont., and many nieces and nephews. Carl was employed at DND Halifax Dockyards as a Radar Electrician for 35 plus years retiring in 1988. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Melville Heights and to the healthcare professionals at 7.2 for their continued care and attention. WESTON, Dorothy Evelyn
88, of Halifax, passed away peacefully Monday, April 27, 2009, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, with her loving family by her side. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Ethel (MacDonald) Brunt. A faithful member of Bayers Road United Baptist Church, she was active in various church groups and a past member of West End United Baptist Church and also an active supporter of the Salvation Army. She volunteered at the old Halifax Infirmary and various other organizations. Women for Music of the Nova Scotia Symphony was also very important to her. A loving mother, grandmother and friend, she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Surviving are sons, Kenneth "Ken" (Margaret) Weston, Everett "Harold" Weston, both of Halifax; brothers, Roy (Dorothy) Brunt, Edward (Phyllis) Brunt, both of Halifax; grandchildren, Tara (Dwayne) Isenor, Halifax; Holly Weston, Chicago; Cory Weston, Halifax; great-grandchild, Noah Isenor, Halifax. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Everett Weston; son, Brian in infancy and brother, Harold. 41, Dayspring, Lunenburg Co., passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on April 26, 2009. Born in Bridgewater, he was a son of Madeline (Joudrey) Bolivar, Dayspring and the late Avard Bolivar. Surviving are his wife, the former Krista Powers; sons, Brandon and Devon; sister, Cheryl (Jim) Dibbin, Hammonds Plains; numerous aunts and uncles; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Walter and Marion Bolivar; maternal grandparents, Stelman and Hazel Joudrey. There will be no visitation in the funeral home. FARRELL, Olwen Dorothy
88, Berwick, Kings Co., passed away peacefully Monday, April 27, 2009, in her home. She was a daughter of the late Cyril V. and Nancy (Davies) Farrell. Olwen was a lifelong resident of Berwick and will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. 66, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009, in Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg, formerly of Wileville. He was born in Newburne and was a son of the late James Sr. and Addie (Dorey) Mader. Surviving are daughter, Jamie (Steven) Mader-Barry, Alberta; sisters, Margaret (Michael) Wentzell, Maplewood; Arlene, New Brunswick; Nancy (Stephen) Warner, Newburne; brothers, Carter (Irene) and Avard (Loreen), both of Newburne; grandson, Alexander Barry; many nieces and nephews and brother-in-law, Douglas Wentzell, Newburne. He was predeceased by his sister, Iona Wentzell. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m. today in Sweeny's Funeral Home, 4895 Highway 10, New Germany. FRENCH, Emily Winifred "Freda"
86, of Dartmouth, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2009, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, Halifax. Freda was born in Ireland and was a daughter of the late Henry and Mary Dawson. She was a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, stationed in Scotland. This is where she met and married her husband Art, who was a RCAF Flying Officer in Coastal Command. She arrived in Canada through Pier 21 and lived in Amherst, as well as Windsor, Toronto and in Dartmouth since 1962. Freda loved her time spent with her family and enjoyed summers at her cottage at Amherst Shore. She was 'first mate' to Art for many years on a variety of family boats. She was an avid bridge player, a member of the I.O.D.E., volunteered at the I.W.K., and wrote articles and stories for GAM Magazine. For several years, she worked in the yard goods department at The Bay in Dartmouth. Freda enjoyed traveling, reading, knitting and crafts. She was a wonderful mum, grammy and great-grammy. Freda is survived by her son, John (Cathy) French; daughters, Maureen (Barry) Flick, Ann (John) Sullivan; sister, Isa Allen; grandchildren, Jeffery, Mark, Colin, Adam, Kelly, Samantha and Jessica; great-grandson, Logan. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur B. French; brothers, Gordon and Bertie; sisters, Elsie and Martha. We wish to extend heartfelt thanks to all the staff of Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, especially V4W, for their outstanding compassion and care over the years. It meant so much to us. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will take place Friday, May 1, at 11:30 a.m. in A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland St., Dartmouth, Rev. Glen MacLean will officiate. He was retired from the Boilermakers, Local 73, and Imperial Oil. He was active in the Knights of Columbus Council 11456. He volunteered at Woodside United Church Food Bank. He was a friend of Bill W. He is survived by his wife, Norma (Leger); son, Danny (Sheryl), Kingston; daughters, Vicki (Dave) Ellis, Etobicoke, Ont.; Kelly (Shawn) Doyle, Dartmouth; five grandchildren; brothers, William (Mary) Martin, Ottawa, Ont.; brother, Joe (Norma) Martin, Bridgewater; sisters, Dorothy Kiley, Ketch Harbour; Norma Thompson, Spryfield. He was predeceased by infant son, Darryl; brother, Jimmy. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 30, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Church, 320 Flying Cloud Dr., Dartmouth, in the Sophia Room.
