Mrs. Alice W. Dompierre
1916-2009
Alice Winnifred Dompierre – 92, of Cambridge, Kings County, passed away Friday, September 18, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, following a brief illness. Born in Brooklyn Corner, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Vera (Robinson) Hale. Alice graduated from Kings County Academy and later the Provincial Normal College and Acadia University. This was followed by teaching in several county schools. Later she was employed with Acadian Coach Lines in Halifax. Following the illness and death of her husband, Arthur Dompierre, she returned to teaching in Kings County and retired after many years as outstanding French teacher at Central Kings Rural High School. Alice was a member of the Cambridge Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on many committees. Surviving are her son, Philip; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Jean; two brothers, Kenneth and John. Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, September 21, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2009 in the Cambridge Baptist Church, Reverend Garnet Parker and Reverend Doctor Judith Saunders officiating. Burial will take place in the Cambridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Cambridge Baptist Church or the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
Mr. Lyle K. Foster
1928-2009
Lyle Keith Foster - 80, of Cambridge, Kings County, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2009 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Waterville, Kings County, he was a son of the late John and Nora (Lightfoot) Foster. He had been employed as a conductor with the Dominion Atlantic Railway, retiring with 37 years of service. He enjoyed fishing and duck carving. He was a member of the I.O.O.F, Hiawatha Lodge No. 57, Kentville. He is survived by his wife, the former, Kathleen “Cass” White; two daughters, Patricia (Dr. John) Burgess, Calgary; Susan Foster (John Owens), Toronto; two sons, Greg (Cathy) Foster, Burton, New Brunswick; Michael E. (Kathy) Foster, Falmouth; one sister, Pauline Church, The Berkley, Bedford; one brother, Richard (Barbara), Waverly; one sister-in-law, Jean Foster, Berwick; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Malcolm and John. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service will be held at 2:30p.m. Thursday, September 24, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Father Gerald Saulnier officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. A reception will follow in the White Family Funeral Home. Family flowers only by request. Ashton R. Ruggles

Ashton Rolan Ruggles - 4 months and 18 days old, of Kentville, peacefully passed away in his parents arms on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in the IWK Health Centre, Halifax. Born in Kentville, he was a son of Trevor Parker and Stephanie Ruggles. He is also survived by, and will be terribly missed by, his brothers, Walker and Jackson Ruggles. For the short time he was with us he battled with chronic lung disease, acid reflux and bleeding on his brain. He was a strong fighter for someone so small. He touched the hearts of all who knew and loved him. The family wish to express their sincere appreciation to the doctors, nurses and social worker who took such special care of Ashton. A special thank you to family, friends and the organizations who have shared this journey. Visitation will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, September 25, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2009, Reverend John McNally officiating. Mr. Mariano A. Avila
1930-2009
Mariano Asia Avila - of Waterville, Kings County, passed away Friday, September 25, 2009 at home. Born in the Philippines, he was a son of the late Jose and Leoncia (Asia) Avila. He was a retired scientist, having worked as a research developer with Scotian Gold in Coldbrook. He is survived by his wife the former Irene Pasion; a daughter, June, Toronto, Ontario; a son, Alex, Malaysia; a brother, Leovigildo, Edmonton, Alberta; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister and two brothers. Cremation has take place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2009 in the Berwick Cemetery, Berwick, Kings County, Reverend Donald Rafuse officiating. Donations in memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
Mr. Louis L. Sarsfield
1926-2009
Louis "Lou" Lyons Sarsfield, 82, of New Minas, died peacefully in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, on September 28, 2009, with his children by his side, the last of the “Sarsfield boys”, a gentleman to the end. Born in Canning on December 21, 1926 to the late Joseph and Julia (Lyons) Sarsfield, Lou spent his younger years in Canning, working alongside his father and brothers in the family businesses. Lou had a long career in sales, primarily in the agri-food sector and real estate. He lived in several other locations in Nova Scotia before returning to live in Canning in 1975. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for several years at Cobi Foods in Hillaton. His great joys were his family and friends. He had a keen interest in Canadian and American politics, and spent many hours listening to CBC radio. Lou is survived by his son, John "Jack" (Cindy) Sarsfield, Halifax; daughters, Jill (Allan) Fredericks, Kentville, and Tracie (Michael) Turner, Steam Mill; grandchildren, Shane Sarsfield, Vancouver; Erin Fredericks, Halifax; Amy Fredericks, Fredericton and Isaac and Noah Turner, Steam Mill (more than proud); sister-in-law, Theresa McIsaac (Sarsfield); numerous nieces and nephews; friends Robert Martin and Mona Dawson. He was predeceased by his wife of more than 50 years, Viola “Ola” (Winchester) Sarsfield, R.N.; sister, Margaret Johnson; brothers, Paul, Gerald and Lawrence “Babe” Sarsfield; sisters-in-law, Stella, Frances and Catherine Sarsfield. Special thanks to the staff of Medical A, Medical B and the Emergency Department of the Valley Regional Hospital; 6A-Centennial Building, VG Site, QEII Health Sciences Centre and the Annapolis Valley Victorian Order of Nurses - the care and compassion was world class. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2009 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral mass, followed by a reception, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 2, 2009 in St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Canning, Father Sean Cahill officiating. Burial will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery, Kentville. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Cancer Society.
