Leslie Stephen Wile- of Lower Branch passed away peacefully at the Veterans' Unit of the Fishermen's Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg on November 26, 2002. Leslie was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who had a special talent for putting a smile on the face of everyone around him. He always had a story to tell, a joke to be told, or a little tune to brighten your day. He left his family and friends with many wonderful memories that will stay in their hearts forever.
Leslie grew up in the community of Wileville, and returned there to raise his own family after serving overseas in the Second World War. Leslie had a love for music and could play almost any instrument, but the ones he loved the most were the guitar, fiddle and accordion. He played side-by-side with his good friend Wilson Wile at many community events and in the homes of his friends. Leslie also loved the outdoors; fishing and hunting were a big part of his life. He had a successful career in the carpentry business, and built many of the homes in his community. In his retirement years, the love for carpentry turned into a hobby of woodworking in which he spent numerous hours in his workshop creating beautiful pieces of work for his children and grandchildren. Leslie also loved to play cards and spend many Wednesday nights doing so, at the Seniors' Club in Bridgewater. He spent the last two years at the Veterans' Unit of the Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, where he quickly became part of their family, making many new friends and reuniting with friends from years ago.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Rafuse); daughters Holly (Mike) Smith, Midville Branch; Margo (Bill) Dooley, Cherry Hill; Sandra (Clifford) Slauenwhite, Italy Cross; son Stephen (Niki) Wile, Alberta; stepdaughters Jeannette (Peter) Jefferson, Hebbville; Trudy (Derrick) Langille, Pleasantville; Wendy (Gary) Feindel, Brooklyn; and stepson Charles Zwicker, Bridgewater; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; brother Daniel "Buddy" (Joan) Wile, Wileville; sisters Betty Northrup, Lunenburg; Linda (Ross) Publicover, Ontario; several nieces and nephews. JOUDREY, Robert E. "The Fiddlin' Farmer" - Lower Northfield, Lunenburg Co., passed away peacefully at his home in Lower Northfield on Saturday, February 26, 2005. Born in Lower Northfield, he was a son of the late Robert Clyde and Beatrice Mabel (Fancy) Joudrey. After receiving a fiddle from his grandmother, Robert started playing in his mid-teens. Learning his skills by listening to Don Messer's radio program, he soon started to play at dances, hoedowns, and jamborees winning many Old Time Fiddling Contests, trophies and the hearts of his listeners and fellow musicians. When Robert was not busy working on his small beef farm in Lower Northfield, he was usually busy playing his fiddle. That is why they called him the "Fiddlin' Farmer". He had composed over 110 tunes as well as about a dozen songs. Many of these tunes were compiled in his two books of music as well as heard on his CD "Barn Dance Fiddling". This showed the love he had for Lunenburg County and its rich heritage and the people with whom he shared it all whenever he had the chance. Robert's fiddle tunes were recorded by some well-known musicians, some of which include Ivan Hicks, Buddy MacMaster, Natalie MacMaster, Tony Burtnik and Jennifer Roland. Some of his tunes were also played by Don Messer years ago on CFCY Radio. In October of 1983, he began his annual Harvest Moon Jamboree and Pumpkin Show which became a crowd favourite earning funds for local fire departments. Another popular show was his annual Springtime Country Music Jamboree. Robert always used every opportunity to showcase the talents of young up and coming musicians. On February 23, 2005, Lieutenant Governor Mira Freeman bestowed honours to the Fiddlin' Farmer in Lower Northfield and also did a step dance for him. Thank you to Elvis Ernst for arranging to have him honoured. Robert is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Meisner); daughters, Ann (Tremayne) Nauss; Sweetland; Beth (Lyndon) Uhlman, Pine Grove; grandchildren, Jordan and Logan Nauss; Chelsea Uhlman; brother, Arnold, Lower Northfield; sister, Helen (Lawrence) Bruhm, Cookville; numerous nieces and nephews.
