Darlene Cavell (Pyke) MacDonald

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our wife, mother, and grandmother, Darlene Cavell (Pyke) MacDonald, 56, of Sydney, N.S. Our ‘Mama Bear’ passed away at home Oct. 8, 2011, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. ‘Mama Bear’ can rest peacefully knowing she died in the arms of her loved ones.

Darlene was born Aug. 27, 1955, and raised in Sydney, N.S. She was the beloved daughter of Sarah Pyke and the late Alvin Pyke.

Darlene was a devout life member of the Salvation Army Church. In her early years she was active in Timbrels, Songsters, Sunday School and Youth Group. She graduated from Holy Angels High School and subsequently completed the certificate for the Steno Program. For 34 years, she was a dedicated employee of both St. Rita’s Hospital and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital as a ward clerk and later as a staffing clerk. Darlene was an active member in the CUPE union and was very proud of her role as shop steward.

Darlene is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, John MacDonald, Sydney, N.S. She is also survived by, and will be lovingly remembered by her two children, Diane MacDonald, Dartmouth, N.S., and Ryan MacDonald, Sydney, N.S. ‘Nanny’ will be forever cherished by her only granddaughter, Madison Vanderlinden, Dartmouth, N.S. Darlene is also survived and will be sadly missed by her sisters, Valery Penny (Donald), Dartmouth, N.S., and Marsha Walker (Gordon), Calgary, Alta.; and brothers, David Pyke (Joanne), Sydney, N.S., and Blenos Pyke (Gina), Sydney, N.S. Aunt ‘Dar’ is also survived by several nieces and nephews and numerous aunts and uncles.

Darlene was predeceased by a sister, Linda, in infancy.

Visitation for the late Darlene MacDonald will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd, Sydney, on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, from 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Darlene MacDonald will be held Thursday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. in The Salvation Army Sydney Community Church, 55 Inglis St., Sydney, with Major Daniel Roode officiating.

Memorial donations in memory of Darlene may be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

John Gerard Rankin

60, Mabou, passed away on Monday, November 7, 2011 at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family.

John was the son of the late John and Sally Rankin of Mabou.

John was a member of the Steam and Pipe Fitters’ Union for over 40 years.

Besides his parents, John was predeceased by brothers, Alexander J. and his wife Kathleen and John Cameron and his wife Geraldine.

John is survived by sisters, Margaret R. (Rudy Lauzon), Catherine Marie (Martin Cameron), Elizabeth (the late Malcolm MacDonald), Donna Anne (the late I.D. MacDonald), Mary Lorette (Donald Beaton), Judy (Gerald MacDonald) and Janet (Hugh MacDonald); and brothers, Angus Finlay (Anne), Daniel (Effie), Harold Roderick (Paula) and Francis Terrance (Ella).

Visitation for the late John Gerard Rankin will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, Nov. 11, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in St. Mary’s Vestry, Mabou. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of John Gerard Rankin will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church with Fr. Angus Morris officiating.

Family flowers only, donations in memory of John may be made to Inverness Palliative Care, any Food Bank or a charity of choice

Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.

Harry Phillips

We, the family, regret to inform you that Harry Phillips, East Broadway, passed away on Dec. 8, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after battling with cancer.

Born in Bolsward, Holland, Aug. 23, 1946, Harry was the son of the late Hugh and Fredricka (Keesen) Phillips.

Harry worked for Irving oil doing pump maintenance. He also worked at Mullins Coal Bank, the former coke ovens and retired as a millwright at Sydney Steel. Harry was also known for his expertise at fixing compressors and also as the man who owned “The Tank”. He was also foreman for the building of South Bar ball field.

Harry is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary (Fraser) Phillips and by his two sons, Warrant Blair Phillips (Tina), Lawrencetown and Mark Phillips, at home. He is also survived by two grandsons, Alex and Scotty; six sisters, Hughena 'Weinie' (Dave Robinson), Moncton, Linda (Greg Murphy), Bernita 'Honey' (Danny MacNeil), both of Hamilton, Patsy (Alan Moss), Lyda (Bobby), Mary Anita 'Bunny', all of Sydney; six brothers, Donnie 'Bruchie', Toronto, Hilton 'Jr.' (Trish), Wendell (Bip), Melvyn, Johnny and Glen, all of Sydney; sister in-law, Margie Parr and brother-in-law, Kevin Young. Harry also leaves to mourn his mother-in-law, Florence Fraser; sisters-in-law, Betty (Greg Hill), Diane Delaney, Donna (Blair McKinnon) and brothers-in-law, Jimmy (Frances) Fraser, Michael (Mary) Fraser. He will also be missed by his aunts, Clara Gale, Thelma, Olga and Myrna; uncle, Elmer along with numerous nieces and nephews, and special cousin, Norma.

Besides his parents, Harry was predeceased by a sister, Brenda; brother, Larry; brother-in-law, Blair Fraser, Pat Delaney; nephews, Donnie Fraser and Kendall Hill; niece, Pam Moss and his sister-in-law, Rose Marie Fraser.

Visitation for the late Harry Phillips will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd., Sydney, today (Saturday), Dec. 10, 2011, 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 11, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Harry Phillips will be held Monday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. in the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Carol Ann Nixon

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness we announce the passing of Carol Ann Nixon on Jan. 13, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Fredericton, N.B., Carol Ann was the daughter of the late Robert and Clara (O’Leary) Johnston.

Carol Ann was an employee of the federal government of Canada until her retirement. She was a volunteer at the SPCA, member of the United Commercial Travellers and past member of Sydney Kinettes. Carol Ann was in a group of all women known as ‘The Fossil Group’. She loved to dance, travel and being outdoors surrounded by nature. Carol Ann will be remembered by family and friends for her kind and gentle soul.

Carol Ann will be sadly missed by her dance partner and best friend, Leo Evans; stepson, John (Janet) Evans; grandchildren, Taylor, Cameron and Alyssa; great-grandson, Ryder; brothers, Lewis ‘Bud’ and Earl Johnston; nieces, Rebecca, Heather and Tracy; and nephew, Malcolm.

Besides her parents, Carol Ann was predeceased by brother, Arthur and sisters, Martha, Roberta, Betty and Patsy at infancy.

Visitation for the late Carol Ann Nixon will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd., Sydney, on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to celebrate the life of Carol Ann Nixon will be held Wednesday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. in the Pier Community Funeral Home, All Faith Chapel, with Rev. Thomas Whent officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Thomas 'Tommy' A. Corbett

It is with heavy hearts and sadness we announce the sudden passing of Thomas ‘Tommy’ A. Corbett on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a long and courageous battle with heart disease.

Born in Sydney, Tommy was the son of Tom and Ronelda (MacPherson) Corbett.

Through the years Tommy was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. His illness, since childhood, never interfered with his way of life. Everyday was a bonus for Tommy and he lived each day to the fullest.

Besides his parents, Tommy leaves his loving sister and brother, Karen (John) Eisan and Troy (Lesley) Corbett. Tommy will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews who loved him dearly, Ambyr (TJ) and Kaitlyn (Tim) Eisan, Brittany and Breanna Lynk, John (Crystal) Eisan and Thomas and Troy Corbett; as well as his fiancé and soul mate, Norma Morrison.

Tommy was predeceased by grandparents, John and Theresa MacPherson and Pius and Alma Corbett, and an aunt, Pat Hawco.

In honoring Tommy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late Thomas ‘Tommy’ A. Corbett will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd., Whitney Pier, on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, from 12-2 p.m. Funeral mass to celebrate the life of Thomas ‘Tommy’ A. Corbett will be held on the same day, Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul Murphy officiating. A private Interment will take place at a later date. Reception will be shared following the mass at the Pier Community Funeral Home.

Donations in memory of Tommy may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.

Naomi Hoban

It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Naomi Hoban on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Bonavista, Nfld., Naomi was the daughter of the late George and Emily (Hicks) Keel.

Naomi, our mother, loved life. She loved cooking, knitting, crocheting and most of all, playing her favourite tune on the harmonica, “You are My Sunshine.” Mom loved gardening and had a special place in her heart for animals. Mom welcomed everyone who visited the home and would offer you 'Tea and Toast.' Naomi will always be remembered by family and friends for being a beautiful kind soul.

Naomi leaves to mourn her son, Bill; daughter, Mildred Brydson; grandchildren, Ray, Rita, Jana, David, Gail and Walter; great-grandchildren, Jetanne, Randelle, Jay, Daniel, Deedra, Derek, Riley, Keegan and Maeve; great-great-grandchild, Simone; daughter-in-law, Dorothy; best friend, Joan Morrison; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Naomi was predeceased by husband, Arch, children, Jeanette and Howard, brother, Hubert and sister, Grace.

Visitation and funeral service to celebrate the life of Naomi Hoban will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Monday, April 29, 2013. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. with service to follow at 1 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Wade Reppert officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the reception area following the service. Interment will take place in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.

Stephen 'Steve' Francis Dilney

It is with sadness we announce the passing of Stephen ‘Steve’ Francis Dilney on May 28, 2013, at home.

Born in Sydney, Steve was the son of the late Steve and Agnes Dilney.

Steve lived a simple life. He loved camping, outdoor fires and most of all his man cave. Steve will be remembered by family and friends for his determination and being kind-hearted.

Steve leaves behind his wife, Shawn Dilney; sons, Edward and John; stepson, Gary (Kimberly); grandchildren, Riley, Hannah, Ty and Mila; several brothers and sisters; as well as good friends, John Gail and Bubby Rutherford.

Visitation and funeral service to celebrate the life of Stephen ‘Steve’ Francis Dilney will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Saturday, June 1, 2013. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 12-2 p.m. with service to follow at 2:30 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev.
