John Jackson

John Jackson died Dec. 1, 2012, with his family by his side, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late John and Mary Jackson. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, John ‘Doddy’ was a friend to many.

He began his career in the shipping industry. He joined the Merchant Navy and spent many years sailing, working his way up to chief engineer with the Canadian Coast Guard. From that experience, John’s interest in thermal energy was born and he began working in heavy industry. He worked for Saint John Ship Building and Guildford’s Insulation. He began three successful companies of his own and retired from Altair Contracting. John helped develop the standards for the emerging insulation trade as one of the principal architects of the NB Insulators Apprenticeship Program. He was instrumental in establishing the national standards for the Contract Insulation and held senior executive positions, including president, in the Thermal Insulation Association of Canada.

John’s other career was as a guitar player and singer with several Saint John bands, the most successful was The Port City Five. He was a life long Celtic supporter, enjoyed reading and science, was an artist and his greatest joy came from being with friends and family.

John is survived by the love of his life, Jean, children, John (Darlene), James (Sue), Shannon (Rob) and Joseph (Alex); his grandchildren, Emily, Calum, Kassandra, Robert, Zoe, and Declan. Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., from 1-2 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow in the chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.

Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society. Up yer’kilt, Doddy

Michael Pentecost

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Robert Pentecost, on Thursday November 15,2012 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born in Sydney he was the son of William and Gzalla (Dorogi) Pentecost, Westmount. He enjoyed fishing and camping in the Highlands, playing cards, tinkering around the yard, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his son, Logan Pentecost; long time companion, Dorothy LeDrew; sisters, Margie, Betty (Billy), Donna (Darren); brothers, William ‘BooBoo’, Brian, Kevin (Jennifer) as well as several nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by his brother, Joseph. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, November 19, 2012 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.

Howard 'Howie' Hoban

After a full life Howie passed away with his wife and daughter by his side at the An Cala Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Nov. 9, 2012. He will always be remembered by his wife, Dorothy (Kelly) of 58 years; daughter, Gail (John) Hoar, Dartmouth; and son, Walter (Michelle), Ottawa; granddaughters he adored, Riley, Keegan and Maeve Hoban, Ottawa. Born in Sydney in 1931, he attended Ashby school and spent his working years at Eatons, K-Mart and Charlie Joe’s Furniture. After retiring he had many enjoyable trips with friends to Europe and various locations in the U.S. Howie loved to golf, skate, hockey, walk, morning coffees, summers at Mira and good friends. He was a man who had time to listen to others and offer any help that he could as he was a genuine Mr. Fix-it. His yard and garden were one of his joys along with the love of creating and building works of art from recycled materials. A member of the Old Sydney Society and a former member of the Seaview Golf Club and the CN Pensioners bowling league. He is also survived by his mother, Naomi Hoban; brother, Bill, Sydney; sister, Mildred, Ontario; nieces and nephews, and loving in-laws from Antigonish and Ontario. Besides his father, Arch, he was predeceased by his sister, Jeanette Hartley. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Saturday Nov. 17, 2012, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 12-2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Reception to follow. Family flowers only please. If desired memorial donations may be made to the An Cala Unit or to the Cape Breton Regional Library.

John MacInnis

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father and grandfather on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 surrounded by his family and Muriel, his loving wife of 60 years, at his home in Balls Creek. John was born Aug. 11, 1924 in Frenchvale. Upon his return from serving overseas during World War II, he built lumber and trucking businesses that employed many and operated successfully for over 40 years. He also worked for over 40 years as a bus driver with Cape Breton County School Board and 16 years as a County Councillor. He devoted his life to his family, always having a kind word and a smile for everyone. He worked hard all his life to provide a good life for those he loved and his love was not limited to his immediate family. All who came close to John benefited from his approach to life. His door was forever open for friends and family and he always made time to listen. His favorite past time was harness racing – he owned and trained many horses. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church; Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 126 Westmount, and; enjoyed many years with the Cape Breton Horsemen’s Association. He is survived by his wife Muriel ‘MacInnis’ MacInnis; son Calvin and daughter-in-law Deanna; grandchildren Noah, Aidan and Devin; brothers Martin, Father Dan, Hughie, and Lauchie; sisters Margaret Campbell, Theresa Dowie and Rita MacDonald, and; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his parents Angus and Margaret; brother Michael; sisters Mary Ann MacIsaac and Annie Deleskie, and; in-laws Hugh Campbell, Alex Dowie, Jerome Deleskie, Steve MacIsaac, Donald MacDonald, Christina MacInnis and Theresa MacInnis. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at St. Mary’s Church 1769 Frenchvale Road, with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Interment to follow in Calvin Cemetery, Upper Leitches’ Creek. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

John James Smith

John James Smith 92, Sydney It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John James Smith of 130 Reeves st. Sydney. Born in Sydney he was the son of the late John and Elsie Smith. Smitty served in the Second World War, then after the war proceed to work at the Sydney Steel plant until his retirement. He was also a member of the Branch 12 Legion, Sydney. Smitty greatly enjoyed shooting darts at the legion, and playing cards with all his friends on Reeves St. We would like to thank Parker, who was Smitty best friend as well as his care giver, the private staff and breton care givers who over the years took great care of him. Special thanks to his friends at reeves st. Who he cared a great deal for Smitty was survived by nieces and one nephew Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brother Philip and sister Agnes Myatt. As per Smitty's request cremation has taken place and a legion service be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday November 10, 2012, at the SW Chant & Son Funeral Home , 564 Alexandra St, Sydney.

Sylvester Richard Burke

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Sylvester Burke at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney on Dec. 20, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He spent many years truck driving and worked as a school bus driver. Sylvester was truly loved and respected by the children he drove to and from school. Sylvester is survived by his wife of 67 years, Susan (Kennedy) Burke; and will also be sadly missed by his children, Dennis (Mary), Helen (Charlie), Joey (Linda), Terry (Donna), Billy (Denise), Maurice (Maureen), Anita (Darryl) and Mary (Stan). He is also survived by his son-in-law, Kevin; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; adopted sister, Ana Anderson and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William D. and Veronica (Bates) Burke, his brother, William and two sons in infancy. Sylvester was also predeceased by great-grandson, Drake. Visitation will take place Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Church, Main–a-Dieu from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Church, Main-a-Dieu, with Fr. Raj officiating. Interment to follow in parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sylvester’s memory to the VON or a charity of ones choice.

Annette Joan D'Arc Bonnell-Marshall

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Annette Bonnell-Marshall on Dec. 18, 2012, at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney. Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Margaret (Renaud) Dubois. Annette was employed by the University College of Cape Breton as co-director of the Electronic Learning Centre. After her retirement in 1988, she kept close ties to the college and was a member of the University Faculty Alumni. She was well known and loved by faculty and students alike. Annette was a very loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her caring nature and capacity to reach out to others made her a much-adored member of her community. Annette is survived by her longtime loving companion, Ross Marshall; daughters, Linda Ouellet, Barrie, Gail Bonnell, Sydney; sons, Larry (Sheila) Bonnell, Oshawa, Wally and Michael (Diane) Bonnell, Scarborough, Tim (Michelle) Bonnell, Sydney; and two stepsons, Paul (Tina) and Eric Marshall, Toronto; 10 grandchildren, Rene and Nicole, Annette, Lawrence and Creig, Christine and Carrie Ann, Tim, Nicholas and Travis; numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Maurice (Marg) Dubois, London; and one sister, Margaret (Joe) Egardo, California. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Francis Bonnell, son, Raymond, and daughter, Franklyn Edwards and three brothers, Peter, Louis and Edward Dubois, sister, Tenia Phillippo. Visitation will be held Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. Donations may be made to the Diabetes Society in lieu of flowers.

Alexander 'Al' Hoban

Alexander William Hoban died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at his home. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late George Eli and Ann Elizabeth (Hollis) Hoban. He served for 27 years with the Royal Canadian Air Force and 10 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12. He is survived by his wife, Betty (MacDonald) Hoban; former wife Phyllis (Fryer) Hoban; four daughters, Cathy (Eric) Mattson, Wendy (Rod) Hoban, Rosalee Hoban and Cheryl (Corey) Hoban; three sons, Randall (Barbara) Hoban, Steven (Cathy) Hoban and Anthony (Wendy) Hoban; sister, Diane (Allan) MacQuarrie; brother, George (Wanda) Hoban; grandchildren, Brandi, Alesha, Jonathan, Patrick, Fraser, Elliot, Olivia and Jesse (Julie) MacAulay and great-grandson, Noah MacAulay. There will be no visitation. A family memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in memory of Al may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
