Mr. Francis Ronald "Frank" German
1935-2010
Francis Ronald “Frank” German - 74, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010 at home. Born in Bridgetown, he was a son of the late Frank and Arvilla (Jackson) German. He served with the 2nd R.C.H.A. in the 1950’s and was later employed with Canada Post in Toronto and Kentville for 26 years. He enjoyed playing cards, carving, fishing, painting, bird watching and nature. He is survived by his wife, the former Anita Bright; two daughters, Debbie German, Woodbridge, Ontario; Brandy (Rick) Stirling, Wolfville; seven sons, David (Jane) Bright, Woodbridge, Ontario; Terry Bright, Burlington, Ontario; Clyde (Michelle) German, Burlington; Paul (Candy) German, Barrie, Ontario; Roger German, Tweed, Ontario; Rick German and Frank German, both of Toronto; a sister, Karen Wright, Halifax; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation, by request. A combined Royal Canadian Legion service and funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend John McNally officiating. A reception will follow in the Royal Canadian Legion, Kings Branch No. 6, River Street, Kentville. Burial will take place at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville.
Mrs. Joyce Lillian Slack
1928-2010
Joyce Lillian Slack - 81, formerly of Kentville, passed away Thursday, April 8, 2010 after a lengthy illness in the Wolfville Nursing Home. Born in Brooklyn Corner, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Holder) Boyle. After graduating from Mack Business School, she worked in Kentville as a legal stenographer and subsequently worked with the late Dr. Robert Healy for 25 years. Always active in the Church, Joyce served as a member with the Finance Committee and the Ladies Auxiliary of Bethany Memorial Baptist Church. She was a dedicated volunteer and fulfilled a number of leadership roles in the Aldershot School Community. Joyce devoted herself to her family and will be sadly missed by her three daughters, Joan (David) MacDonald, Saint John, New Brunswick; Lynn (Erhardt) Frank, Medicine Hat, Alberta; Marlene (John) Stones, Calgary, Alberta; and son, Alan, Kentville; her eight grandchildren, Michael (Kelly), Jan (Alberto), Richele, Jillian (Mark), Hilary, Savanna, Roger and Riley; five great grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family predeceased, by her husband, Rudolph ”Rudy”, sister, Frances, six brothers, John, Bill, Bev, Raymond, Curtis and Bernard. There will be no visitation, by family request. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 1, 2010 in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County, Reverend Gary Manthorne officiating. A reception will follow in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. Donations in Joyce’s memory may be made to Bethany Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. William "Elmer" Bezanson
1940-2010
William “Elmer” Bezanson - 69, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away peacefully in the midst of family, Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on the family farm on Brooklyn Street, Kings County, he was the son of the late Foster and Stella (Steadman) Bezanson. Elmer worked on the family farm for many years before entering the plumbing and heating industry, working for almost 30 years at T.P. Calkin (later known as Sumner). He became a leading salesman/specialist, retiring at age 53. In his earlier years, he played hockey, baseball, golf and was an avid fan of the Montreal Canadiens. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his grandchildren. He took great pride in his home and property, constantly keeping things in tip-top shape. Elmer was always quick to lend a helping hand to family and friends, explaining and showing in great detail how things should be done. He is survived by his loving partner, Gertrude Pineo; two sons, Stephen (Gerry), Bridgetown; Michael (Chantal), New Minas; two grandchildren, Sophie and Oliver; two sisters, Phyllis (Cecil) Chase, Aylesford; Edith (Almond) Best, Coldbrook; three brothers, Eric (Ann), Dartmouth; Donnie (Cindy) and Russell (Sheila), both of Coldbrook; sister-in-law, Maxine Bezanson, Cambridge; brother-in-law, Sheldon Best, Coldbrook; several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his extended family, Renee (Dave) Wilson and Justin, Billtown; Todd Pineo, Edmonton. He was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Best; a sister-in-law, Jean Bezanson; a brother, James. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A private family burial will take place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Valley Regional Hospital. Mr. Eric H. Swinimer
1924-2010
Eric Howard Swinimer - 85, of Wolfville, Kings County, passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2010 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Upper Vaughan, Hants County, he was a son of the late Morris James and Flora Louise (Hopper) Swinimer. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas with the R.C.A.F. He had been employed as a supervisor with the former MT&T and was a member of the Telephone Pioneer’s Association. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church Wolfville, the Kentville Masonic Lodge No. 58, the Royal Canadian Legion Dr. C.B. Lumsden Branch No. 74, Wolfville, the Kentville Gyro Club and Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club, New Minas. Eric was an avid bridge player, bowler, curler and golfer. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former, Elsie Jean Gollan, two daughters; Jo-Anne (George) Eye, New Minas; Heather (Bruce) Ross, Port Williams; two granddaughters, Jodi Eye (Vance Swinamer) and Lindsey Ross; a great-granddaughter, Sophie Swinamer. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by three brothers, Glennen, Grover and Harley. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 19, 2010 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Robyn Brown-Hewitt officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville, Kings County. Mr. Laverne W. Lonergan
1945-2010
Laverne William Lonergan - 64, of Coldbrook, Kings County, passed away suddenly on Thursday, April 15, 2010 as a result of injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident. Born in East Dalhousie, he was the son of the late Charles and Madeline (Aalders) Lonergan. He had been employed with F.W. Robinson for several years before he and his partners bought Central Auto in Cambridge. Following the sale of his business he worked for Canavan's Central Appraisal. He was a Charter member of the Coldbrook and District Lions Club, where he held various positions over 35 years and was an Honourary Life Member of the Lions Foundation of Nova Scotia. He was a recipient of the Democracy 250 Citizenship Award and was a member of the Coldbrook Recreation Commission. He enjoyed tractor pulls, John Deere, NASCAR, golf and curling. He was always on the go and received much joy in helping others. Gampie enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter, Olivia and especially enjoyed their special Saturday morning routine with blueberry pancakes. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, the former Linda Mahaney; a son, Kevin (Jennifer), Coldbrook; a daughter, Heather, Halifax; a granddaughter, Olivia - the pride and joy of his life; a sister, Marie (Mark) Durnford, Berwick; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Seldon. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2010 with a Lions service to be held at 7:00 p.m. both in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service followed by a reception will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 19, 2010, Reverend Carl Price officiating. Burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill, Kings County. Family flowers only by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
